CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Operation and maintenance of Substation of DPDC

1.1 Origin of the Report

This report has been prepared as an integral part of the internship program for the Bachelor of
Electrical & Electronic Engineering Program at the Department of BSEEE of International
University of Business Agriculture & Technology & I have done this practicum report based
on the topic of Operation and Maintenance of Substation Equipment of DPDC(Dhaka
Power Distribution Company Ltd.). Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited
(DPDC) is the largest power distribution company in Bangladesh which provides efficient
power to the industrial sector as well as residential area. DPDC has offered the opportunity
for my internship, & during my training period I have worked under the instruction of Engr.
Md. Mizanur Rahamn, Sub-Divisional Engineer, Grid North 2.

1.2 Objective

1.2.1 Broad Objective

The main objective of the report has been done to show the total working procedure of power
transmission, distribution, substation operation, controlling and to understand each and every
equipment of distribution substation.

1.2.2 Specific Objective

The specific objective of this report includes:

To explore the main operational activities of substations of DPDC.

Test and check the equipments of Substation.
To study operation of 132/33/11KV substation.
To evaluate the distribution system of DPDC.
To study the process of power transmission and distribution
To make an analysis of total power consumption, various losses.
To specify the fault and their protection systems.
To Suggest Probable solution of the identified problem.

1.3 Scope

This study was undertaken aiming to know about the distribution system and operational
activities of DPDC. The scope of this study includes reviewing the technical, commercial and
customer service quality of DPDC and identifying tolls and techniques used by DPDC to
achieve remarkable performance level. Moreover, I have been worked under system
operation and system protection unit in DPDC and thus provide me the way to get myself
familiarized with the official environment for the first time. I had an experience by working
in the department. I had the opportunity to have close view of their activities. The area of
concentration of this report is confined in investigating different aspect of implementation
technical division.

1.4 Background

Energy is the basic necessity for the economic development of a country. Many functions
necessary to present-day living grind to halt when the supply of energy stops. It is practically
impossible to estimate the actual magnitude of the part that energy has played in the building
up of present-day civilization. The availability of huge amount of energy in the modern times
has resulted in a shorter working day, higher agricultural and industrial production, a
healthier and more balanced diet and better transportation facilities. As a matter of fact, there
is a close relationship between the energy used per person and his standard of living. The
greater the per capita consumption of energy in a country, the higher is the standard of living
of its people.

To alleviate poverty in the face of resource limitations and high population density,
Bangladesh requires an economic growth rate of about 10% p.a. to provide employment to its
rapidly growing labor force that cannot be absorbed by agriculture. In order to achieve this
growth rate, availability of a reasonably priced and reliable source of electricity is a
prerequisite. Starting from a small base, the power sector in Bangladesh has grown
significantly. The installed generation capacity has increased to about 10289 MW (as on
January, 2014) only three-fourth of which is considered to be available. Only 62% of the
population has access to electricity with a per capita availability of 321 kWh per annum. The
power sector in Bangladesh faced numerous problems characterized by lack of supply

capacity, frequent power cuts, unacceptable quality of supply, and poor financial and
operational performance of the sector entities. The customer service is not praiseworthy.
There have been a number of reforms in the power sector in Bangladesh since her
independence, but most of these reforms failed to bring desired improvements in the power
sector. The most pressing problem in the power sector has been with the distribution system,
which is characterized by heavy system loss and poor collection performance; however, the
distribution system seldom got the priority in reform initiatives.
In the process of Power Sector Reforms by way of unbundling the power sector and increase
efficiency in the area of electricity distribution, Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited
(DPDC) was created as a distribution company in 25th October, 2005 under the Companies
Act 1994 as a Public Limited Company with an Authorized Capital of Tk. 10,000 crore.
However the operational activities of DPDC at the field level commenced on 1st July of
2008.The primary aims in creating DPDC were to provide better consumer service and to
improve revenue collection.

1.5 Methodology

The research of this paper has been done with the help of different sources. The paper was
cheeked by the authorized person of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd. during
preparation. The data was chosen accurately throughout the entire period of the session.
Although there were several sources but some of them are mentioned here as the references.
The information of this report has been collected from the following sources:

Operation and Maintenance Department.

Member Service Department.
General Service Department.
Engineering Department.

1.6 Report Organization

This report is consists of six chapters. The First chapter presents introductory part. The
second chapter discusses about the Company Overview. Thirds chapter consists of
Commercial, System Operation & Load Determinates of DPDC. The Fourth chapter describe

Operation and maintenance of Substation of DPDC
about Grid & Substation Operation. Chapter Five consists of System Protection. Maintenance
of Grid & Substation is chapter six. And finally, the all is about the Conclusion &
Supplementary part.

1.7 Limitation

The study of this paper has some limitation. They are

1. The most important limitation is that the report suffers lack of prior study on this
sector particularly. Though there are 05 (five) Power distribution companies in the
Power distribution industry and the industry structure for competition is
monopoly, that is, consumers in the distribution area are bound to use power from
that responsible company distributing power in that territory. So, to compare
superior performance and competitive advantage of one distribution company
over others is impracticable here.
2. A major portion of the study had been conducted based on the secondary data
collected from different departments of DPDC, newsletters of Bangladesh Power
Development Board (BPDB), Power Cell and Ministry of Power. It was required
to collect data from other entities from the power sector to conduct the study more
appropriately by comparing the performance of other electricity distribution
agencies. But due to time constraint this was not be performed.
3. Collection of sufficient data was a great problem during report preparation. When
DESA handed over the assets and liabilities to DPDC, All of the data,
information, papers, design and drawings were not collected accurately and stored
properly. As a result shortage of data about any subject becomes a problem.
4. Many data and information have to be collected from different department of the
organization. Some of the information were very confidential to the respective
department and thus were difficult to collect.
