The Endocrine System

Label the Diagram below and as we learn about different hormones

produced, mark which gland they come from.
+++++++++
1. Homeostasis - To maintain a condition of balnce and equilibrium
a. What do we as humans have to maintain/balance
i. Blood pH of 7.35-7.45
ii. Body Temp of 98.6 or 37
iii. Blood CO2 levels of 23-29 mEQ/L
iv. Glucose Levels of 70-110 mg/dL
v. Water balance

How does your body maintain these?-------- Hormones

What are some weve already discused?

2. Endcrine System - A network of gland that produce a variety of hormones

a. Hormones
i. chemical messangers
ii. Delevered to specific cells/organs by the blood stream
b. Negative Feedback Physiological pracesses that bring a value back towards a set point
i. EX: If blood sugar is too high a hormone (insulin) is released to lower blood
sugar; if too low hormone (glucagon) is released to raise blood sugar levels.
c. Hormones you need to know
i. Thyroxin
1. Produced by thyroid glands
2. Targets the nucleus of a cell and increases mRNA production
a. Increases protein production
b. Increases metabolism
3. Helps to regulate body temperature
4. Hyperthyroidism - too much thyroxin
a. Anxiety
b. Weight loss
c. Trouble sleeping
d. sweats
5. Hypothyroidism - too little thyroxin.
a. Weight gain
b. Deprression
c. Brittle hair
d. Problems with menstral cycle
e. 10% of women have some degree of hypothyroidism
ii. Leptin
1. Prdouced by fat tissue
2. Targets hypothalamus of brainstem
3. Controls apetite
a. Low levels = hungry
b. High levels = Full
4. Some people show insensitivity to Leptin and remain hungry
iii. Melatonin
1. Produced in the Pineal gland
2. Regulates cicadian rythym
a. Cicadian rhythm is set by exposure to light
iv. Insuilin
1. Produced by pancrease
2. Regulates blood sugar
a. Allows for glucose to be absorbed into the cell
b. Allows liver to convert glucose to glycogen
v. Glucagon
1. Produced by Pancrease
2. Tells liver to convert glycogen back into glucose when sugar levels are
low.
vi. Adrenaline
1. Adrenal gland
2. Increase heart rate, FIGHT
vii. Oxytocin
1. Produced in pituitary gland
2. Stimulaties uterine contractions
3. Triggers production of colostrum
