Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: DNA/RNA Quiz

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 9
Content Standard Addressed:
SB2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze how genetic information is expressed in cells.
a. Construct an explanation of how the structures of DNA and RNA lead to the expression of information
within the cell via the processes of replication, transcription, and translation.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner Students leverage technology to take

an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the
learning sciences.

Selected Technology Tool:

Socrative iRespond Quizlet Plickers Kahoot! Office365 Forms
Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

Computer Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) Phone Tablet (such as iPad)
Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
Teacher-Paced Student-Paced
Blooms Taxonomy Level(s):

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity. This activity could be used in one of two ways- either as a pretest to asses students prior
knowledge, or as a short quiz to assess whether or not students have a good understanding of the concepts. If
it is used after content, it should be used towards the end of the unit on DNA and RNA, before an exam or
final assessment so areas that need more review can be pinointed.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Students will each need a Plicker card in order
to answer the questions, but they do not require their own devices. The teacher can then project the
questions and answer options on the screen and scan the class once they have displayed answers. The quiz is
only about 10 questions long, so if the activity is used as a quiz alone with no discussion of answers, it should
take between 10-15mins. If the quiz answers are discussed and content is reviewed with each question the
activity could take as long as 45mins to complete.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
Multiple choice Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
The questions will be attached onto the Weebly page for better viewing.

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of the questions and display
correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not? I think the activity would work best if students worked together to mutually agree on an
answer, potentially giving reasoning behind their thinking.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? The teacher will analyze the data.

How will the data be used? Plickers gives a report of every students answers at the end of the assessment.
The teacher will be able to look at the data and find the weakest areas to focus more on during instruction.
The teacher can also use this data to find individual students who may be struggling more than others to give
more individualized help. I wouldnt use this assignment for a grade, as I was intending it to be a pre-test or
review, but it could be used in the same way to earn a grade.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. (For example: What are you trying that you have not
tried before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn?)
I have never used an assessment tool that gives immediate grading data, so I would like to use this activity to
gauge the effectiveness for students. I hope to familiarize myself more with giving assessments with tools that
can provide immediate feedback to students to be able to assess the benefit to the students. I hope it will be
a more fun way of giving small quizzes and assessments to better focus my attention on the areas that
students are having the most trouble with.
