Academic Integrity Assignment

1. Plagiarism is commonly referred to as

The act of taking passing off someones work and not giving them
credit.

2. How will student work be checked for plagiarism? (List at least

two ways)

One way to identify plagiarism is to use a plagiarism identification

software called Turnitin. To identify plagiarism, it goes through a
database of writings to determine if it comes from another source.
Another way to check for plagiarism is to routinely compare students
works with each other.

3. Sanctions for plagiarism include (list at least two possible

consequences):

There are 3 sanctions mentioned in the COL document, which are:

receiving a zero on the assignment, a note on the student record,
and expulsion from the course where the violation occurred.

4. What is the difference between accidental plagiarism and

deliberate plagiarism?

Those words are self-explanatory. Accidental plagiarism is when

plagiarism occurs accidentally, usually due to poor citation or
referencing, or poor preparation, or a misunderstanding of
plagiarism. (COL) Deliberate plagiarism is trying to claim someone
elses work as theirs.
5. How can you avoid plagiarism, while still integrating support
(ideas and quotes) in your own work?

You can avoid plagiarism while still integrating support by properly

crediting the owner. There are many ways to do this. First, when
quoting someone directly, you must use quotation marks and mention
the author in your work. Second, when you are paraphrasing or
summarizing, you should be accurate, and reference the owner.

6. Other than the written work, what other items can be

plagiarized? Can you still use these items? How?

A few examples of other items that can be plagiarized are drawings,

music, speeches, structural models and statistics. You can still use
these items as long as they are correctly credited.

7. Do some internet research and find at least one website (not

listed in the Academic Integrity Policy or on the Common Craft
Video) that helped you understand how to avoid plagiarism.

Here is a website by SFU that helped me understand about

plagiarism.

I have reviewed both the Academic Integrity Policy and viewed the
Common Craft: Plagiarism video. I have a good understanding of
Plagiarism and how avoid this practice. If I have any questions (before the
course begins or when completing an assignment), I will send my questions
to the teacher before I submit my work.
