TO: Amy Barnikel, Professor

FROM: Gabriela Hardgrove, Student and Aspiring Medical Writer
SUBJECT: INTRODUCTORY MEMORANDUM

The purpose of this memo is to provide an exposition regarding my role in

the Professional Writing Course as a student at the University of Central
Florida along with my career goals.

My name is Gabriela Hardgrove and I am an Interdisciplinary Studies student

at UCF, specializing in Biomedical Sciences and Health while pursuing a
minor in Writing and Rhetoric. I recently declared this combination after
recollecting my options and reconsidering my hopes and goals, which have
rearranged themselves naturally over the years. Throughout the variety of
majors I have explored at several institutions, I realized that writing and
perhaps communication as a whole had always kept its place in my dream
towards becoming a successful working professional. At this point, my main
interest is to become a Medical Writer.

What Kind of Work is Involved?

Composing and editing disease and drug related literature
Working with a team to release Regulatory Documents and Manuscripts
Writing for Health Care websites and magazines

Some of my other areas of interest which may be related include general

editing and pharmaceutical sales. In general, I would like to use my people
and communication skills to not only benefit, but also educate the public
through simple yet informative literature and interaction. I believe the barrier
between medical jargon and the every day English language is too large, and
that it is not realistic for intelligent families to remain oblivious to important
medical concepts such as prevention and how to remain proactive. These are
important tasks which most practitioners are not able to work into their busy
schedules, since they are dedicated to working with patients on the floor. For
this reason, Medical Writing is an important and legitimate career path on its
own.

In conclusion, I hope to use my writing skills to make a difference in the

everyday lives of common, hardworking people just like you and me.
