Year 11 Mathematics B

Unit Plan
Unit Title: Exponential & Logarithmic Functions & Applications 1
Semester: 2 Unit No: 4 Unit Length: 11 lessons

Focus:
Students will be encouraged to develop an understanding and appreciation of exponential and
logarithmic functions and the relationships between them. They should be conversant with the
three methods of representation (algebraic, graphical, & numerical). Emphasis will be placed on
the application of these functions to solve problems in a range of life-related situations (e.g. finance
and investment, growth and decay). The use of technology will help students in these processes. It is
not intended that great emphasis will be placed on simplification of expressions involving indices or
logarithms.

Subject Matter:
Fundamental knowledge & procedures revision
index laws and definitions
definitions of ax and loga x, for a > 1
logarithmic laws and definitions
solution of equations involving indices
use of logarithms to solve equations involving indices
graphs of and the relationships between, y = ax, y = loga x
applications of simple exponential and logarithmic functions
development of algebraic models from appropriate datasets using logarithms and/or
exponents
Unit Scope and Sequence
NB. This page is designed as a guide for the teacher, highlighting the Minimal scope and possible sequence.
Although learning experiences have been recommended, it is not a lesson by lesson guide to presentation.
