ART 265 Intro to Printmaking Allison Conley

M & W 9am-11:50am Intaglio & Relief allisonsconley@gmail.com

Welcome to printmaking! This class is devoted to teaching you the fundamentals of intaglio and relief. In one short
semester you will engage in techniques printmakers have been working with for hundreds of years while developing
your own portfolio. Through the exploration of these new materials you will grow your technical vocabulary and ex-
pand your experience as an artist. This medium can be very challanging and tedious at times. As a 3-credit course, you
are expected to spend a minimum of 6 hours outside of class working. You are allocated 3 storage spaces in the studio:
a locker, a flatfile, and a wooden vertical file. Please label each with your name and appropriate semester.

Cost of Class
Before you commit to this class, please understand that the materials we use can be costly. Although I will suggest ways to keep
costs down, almost everything we use is essential to learning this medium. Last semester, the average cost to students in this class
was $450. This includes shop fee, art kit, materials purchased through our shop, and outside materials such as paper, towels, and
gloves. Materials that you buy through the shop (out of our storeroom) will be charged to your student account twice a semester-
during midterms, and after finals.

Attendance
3 absences will be allowed. You do not need a reason or explanation for your absence. After 3 absences, your final grade will be
dropped one full letter grade for each additional absence. Please note that leaving early, coming in late, and leaving for extended
periods of time constitutes an absence. Coming to class unprepared (i.e. without proper studio dress or without a print for a
critique) also constitutes an absence.

Demos
Demos are extremely important. We will cover many complex techniques in this class, as well as using toxic materials and expen-
sive equipment. You must be trained and cleared to use these materials. Demos will NOT be repeated. If you miss a demo, you
must research the technique independently and present me with a written report that proves you have a full understanding of the
process before you may use the materials and equipment. It would be in your best interest to not miss a demo.

Grading
Your final grade is a culmination of multiple performances including: work ethic, attendance, cleanliness and shop etiquette,
understanding and engagement of taught techniques, and final portfolio. Your job in this class is to learn. How you work and
what you produce will be the evidence that reflects your engagement and understanding, thus this is what you will be graded on.

Critiques
We will have several informal and formal critiques throughout the semester. Please always bring work to the critiques as they are
for your benefit. I encourage you to speak openly and listen equally.

Cleanliness and Studio Etiquette

Habitually leaving the shop in disarray or showing disrespect for university property and unwillingness to adjust your behavior
will result in grade deductions. Repeat offenders will be banned from the shop. Damaging, stealing, or interfering with the work
of your fellow students will result in immediate failure of the class and punishment to the full extent of the universitys rules and
regulations. Workspaces should always be left clean and ready for the next person to work.

Technology
With rare exception (such as looking up an artist or researching a technique) computers and phones are not allowed during class.
If there is an emergency and you need to make a call please step outside for a few minutes. If you cannot find anything to do but
stare at your phone during class I can offer you an additional assignment to keep you busy.
Theft
Theft, of any sort, will result in expulsion from the class and a final grade of F. Theft will include taking someone elses materi-
als, stealing prints, and taking photos of work without the artists approval. Artistic theft will be taken just as seriously. Copying
another artists work or simply duplicating someone elses photograph is plagiarism.

Studio Use Outside of Class

The shop should be open in accordance with the building hours: 7am 10pm.
The studio is closed every Friday from 1-7pm without exception.

The shop will get cleaned once a week (usually on Sunday). It is open during this time, however you may have to move some of
your materials out of the way while certain areas are being cleaned.

If another class is in session, you may work quietly so long as you are not disruptive to a demo or critique that is taking place.
When in doubt, ask the professor if they mind you being there. Its usually not a problem at all.

Remember that guests you bring into the studio are your responsibility. If they break, steal, or make a mess, it will be on you.
Only students registered in a printmaking class may use the equipment or materials.

Studio Dress Code

For health and safety reasons, you must abide by the following standards anytime you are using the studio. You may not work in
the studio if these are not followed:

Gloves are required when handling any solvent, ground, ink or acid
Some sort of apron or smock
Hair longer than your shoulders will be tied back
Close-toed shoes at all times
If listening to music, one ear must be uncovered or unplugged

Please cut out this section and return it- completed- on your second day of class.

I have read and understood the syllabus. I agree to abide by the rules and regulations of this classroom and studio. I understand
that disregarding these rules may compromise my grade or result in a loss of privileges and expulsion from the shop.
