Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
During this lesson, we will use the student response tool Socrative three times. The first time will be a warm-
up to review the prior lesson, the second time will be to brainstorm, and the third time will be to check the
students understanding with a game.

Prior to the first SRT activity:

In a previous lesson, I will have introduced students to three basic concepts of matrices: matrix dimensions,
matrix elements, and augmented matrices. At the beginning of this new lesson, I will make sure that each
student has a device (phone, tablet, iPod Touch, laptop, or desktop) where they can login to Socrative via the
web or the app. I will ask students to login to my room (OVERTONMATH) on Socrative, and wait for all
students in the class to enter the virtual room. I will remind students of the matrices concepts we learned
during the previous lesson, and tell them that we will be doing a quick review/warm-up on Socrative. Using
my Socrative Teacher login, I will start the Matrices Day 2: Warm-up, and students will complete the activity
on their devices.

Prior to the second SRT activity:
After students complete the warm-up, we will discuss the results (see the After the SRT activity section
below). Then, I will tell students that we are going to see what else we can do with matrices. To get students
thinking, I will start the brainstorming question (Matrices Day 2: Brainstorm) on Socrative, and students will
complete the activity on their devices.

Prior to the third SRT activity:

I will introduce the concepts of adding and subtracting matrices, and multiplying a matrix by a scalar, and we
will work several problems together as a class. When I think that students understand how to work these
problems, I will explain to the students that they will be playing a team game on Socrative to check their
understanding. From my Socrative Teacher login, I will start the Matrices Day 2: Space Race activity using the
Space Race game. In Socrative, I will select the setting to assign teams randomly, with 3-5 players per team
(depending on the class size), and the class will play the game on their devices.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the first SRT activity:

In the first student response tool activity in this lesson, students will complete the Matrices Day 2: Warm-up
activity individually and anonymously on their devices. After answering each question, the student will see
whether he/she answers correctly or incorrectly. On my screen, I will monitor the students progress and
encourage them to finish the warm-up. This activity will last about 5 minutes.

During the second SRT activity:

In the second student response tool activity in this lesson, students will complete the brainstorming question
anonymously on Socrative (Matrices Day 2: Brainstorm). This activity has one question where students fill in
the blank with as many ideas as they can. I will project the answers/ideas on the board. This activity will last 5
minutes.

During the third SRT activity:

In the third student response tool activity in this lesson, students will complete the Matrices 2: Space Race
activity on their individual devices. Using my Socrative Teacher login, I will assign teams randomly, with 3-5
players per team (depending on the class size). Each group will be assigned a different color rocket ship that
moves forward as each group answers questions correctly. The students will enter their names so that they
can see who is on their team. This activity will last 5 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

Multiple choice Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
The questions for each of the three SRT activities in this lesson are displayed in the documents below this
lesson plan.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?
For the Warm-up activity, I will pre-select the correct answers. After completing each question,
students will see if they chose the correct answer or not. After the class has completed the activity, I
will display the class results on the board. I will display each question and the correct response to
start a discussion about the concepts.
For the Brainstorming activity, I will display the ideas on the board. There are no correct or incorrect
answers.
For the Space Race activity, I will pre-select the correct answers so that students can compete against
each other. After completing each question, students will go on to the next question without seeing
whether they chose the correct answer or not. This will allow the students to progress through the
questions without interruption. Since this is meant to be a quick review at the end of class, I will not
go over the questions immediately after the activity.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the first SRT activity:

Using the results from the Warm-up activity, I will start a discussion with students. We will talk about what
they do or dont remember from the previous lesson, discuss which questions are more difficult and why, and
go over any questions that were commonly missed by students.

After the second SRT activity:

I will project the Brainstorming activity responses on the board. We will discuss the variety of ideas, which
ideas go together, and which ideas are the outliers. I will tell the students which of their ideas we will be
learning about next, in future lessons, or not at all.

After the third SRT activity:

The students will be able to see the Space Race results on their screens, and I will also project the results on
the board. Since this will be the end of the lesson, we will not discuss the results further at this point.

How will the data be used?

I will use the aggregate, anonymous data from the Warm-up activity in real-time to start a discussion about
the concepts, and to review the concepts that the students need to see again. I will use the anonymous ideas
from the Brainstorming activity to start a discussion about matrix operations and what we will learn next. I
will use the student-specific data from the Space Race activity to determine which concepts we need to cover
more in the following lesson, and differentiate instruction, if necessary.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
This lesson will give me more information about the best way to structure, deliver, and use data from
Socrative quizzes, warm-ups, brainstorming activities, and competitions. This lesson includes a variety of
components, including instruction, discussion, and SRT technology. I hope this lesson will increase students
engagement with the content and differentiate the learning for students with different learning styles.
