Lesson Idea Name: Matrices: Adding and Subtracting Matrices and Multiplying a Matrix by a Scalar
Content Area: Math (Pre-Calculus)
Grade Level(s): 11-12
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE9-12.N.VM.6 Use matrices to represent and manipulate data, e.g., transformations of vectors.
MGSE9-12.N.VM.7 Multiply matrices by scalars to produce new matrices.
MGSE9-12.N.VM.8 Add, subtract, and multiply matrices of appropriate dimensions.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
During this lesson, we will use the student response tool Socrative three times. The first time will be a warm-
up to review the prior lesson, the second time will be to brainstorm, and the third time will be to check the
students understanding with a game.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Prior to the second SRT activity:
After students complete the warm-up, we will discuss the results (see the After the SRT activity section
below). Then, I will tell students that we are going to see what else we can do with matrices. To get students
thinking, I will start the brainstorming question (Matrices Day 2: Brainstorm) on Socrative, and students will
complete the activity on their devices.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):
If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
The questions for each of the three SRT activities in this lesson are displayed in the documents below this
lesson plan.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?
For the Warm-up activity, I will pre-select the correct answers. After completing each question,
students will see if they chose the correct answer or not. After the class has completed the activity, I
will display the class results on the board. I will display each question and the correct response to
start a discussion about the concepts.
For the Brainstorming activity, I will display the ideas on the board. There are no correct or incorrect
answers.
For the Space Race activity, I will pre-select the correct answers so that students can compete against
each other. After completing each question, students will go on to the next question without seeing
whether they chose the correct answer or not. This will allow the students to progress through the
questions without interruption. Since this is meant to be a quick review at the end of class, I will not
go over the questions immediately after the activity.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
This lesson will give me more information about the best way to structure, deliver, and use data from
Socrative quizzes, warm-ups, brainstorming activities, and competitions. This lesson includes a variety of
components, including instruction, discussion, and SRT technology. I hope this lesson will increase students
engagement with the content and differentiate the learning for students with different learning styles.
