The Tough Life of a Teen Mom

Jennifer Swims was 17. She had a great boyfriend. She was doing well in school. She wanted to study
medicine and eventually become a doctor.
But that same year, Jennifer got pregnant. It was an accident. Now 18, Jennifer has a baby to take care
of his name is Peter Smith Green and her dreams are on hold.
Today, Jennifer and Peter live in New York with the parents of the babys father. Jennifer is finishing
high school and working to support her child. Peters father, Scot Green, enlisted in the Marines while
Jennifer was still pregnant. She plans to join him where he is stationed in Palm Springs, California, after she
graduates. They will get married then.
Jennifer and Scott werent using birth control when Jennifer got pregnant. Even so, Jennifer says
the pregnancy came as a shock. At the time, Jennifer was living with an aunt and uncle Caroline and Ben
Holt who had raised her since she was a little girl. When she found out she was pregnant she told them
first, and then Scott. Scott wasnt upset, but he wasnt happy either, she says. Her uncle and aunt were
shocked and scared when Jennifer told them she was pregnant. I knew she wasnt ready for it. But most of
all, I was really hurt. I thought Id taught her well, and I thought we had a pretty open relationship, says
Caroline Holt. Despite her disappointment, however, Caroline promised to stand by Jennifer.
Scotts parents had a similar reaction. I was shocked because we have three boys and wed really
talked to them about pregnancy. I didnt want it to happen to them, says Gabriella Green Scotts mom.
Jennifer and Scott were lucky because both of their families were there to help. Many pregnant teens
are not so fortunate.
Jennifer stayed in school through most of her pregnancy. Now, she is finishing a high school
program that will lead her to a degree as a certified nurse assistant. She plans to work in a hospital when she
moves to California. Jennifers goal now is to provide the best life possible for her son. But its not easy.
Sometimes I just start to cry because Im so stressed out, Jennifer says. I would definitely tell any teens
out there to wait until they are older to have kids.
