time, the place, the topic)

you think he responded that way?
5. Why did Asha tell Mr. Todd that he needs to learn about India?

also our communication behavior, in this chapter we examine how culture
affects our communication behavior and how it influences our perception
of the communication we receive from others. We will try to answer these
questions:
1. What is intercultural communication?
2. What are ways people having different culture, beliefs, values,
attitudes, and assumptions interact with one another?
3. What barriers do we face when communicating interculturally?
4. How can we improve our intercultural communication?
J. Examples Short video clips exemplifying intercultural communication will be shown
to students.

In groups, students think of a scenario showing one barrier to intercultural
communication. One scenario should portray how the message went awry
because miscommunication arose followed by another scenario where
participants used a strategy and successfully understood each/one
anothers message.

Intercultural Communication Party

1. Work in groups of five members.
2. Create a fictional country. Discuss for three minutes the general
description of your country using the following guide questions.
a. What is the name of the country? What are its citizens called?
b. Is it an island or is it land-locked?
c. What is its tourist attraction?
d. What is your country famous for?
e. What are its citizens known for?
3. Describe the way these citizens use language, as well as their
general traits. Make sure to have a description for the following:

use polite words?)
c. Nonverbal cues (Do they think shaking hands is distasteful?)

they known for?)
4. Based on these general traits, create a list of 5 Dos and 5 Donts
which your fictional citizens adhere to when they attend a casual
dinner party with friends. You have 10 minutes to come up with the
rules and memorize them.
5. Then, read the following scenario.

You are a citizen of your fictional country, and you are attending a
dinner party with other nationalities. Your goal is to mingle with and
introduce yourself and your fictional country to others.
