735B & 740B Articulated Trucks: Switches: Power Train

Electrical Input Components

Switches
Switches provide the following types of information to the inputs of the Transmission/Chassis ECM: open signals,
ground signals and +battery signals. Switches are open or closed.

When a switch is open, no signal is provided to the corresponding input of the ECM. The "no signal"
condition is also called "floating".
When a switch is closed, a ground signal or a +battery signal is provided to the corresponding input of
the ECM.

Starter Keyswitch

Starter Key Switch

The "Key Start Switch" is an input of the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The switch connects to connector contact J2-
1. The switch tells the ECM that the operator wants to start the engine. The ECM then initiates the neutral start
function. See Systems Operation, "Neutral Start Function" for more information. The signal is open during normal
operation. When the key start switch is in the START position, the switch will close to the +battery circuit.
The switch has four terminals. Terminal "S" connects to the ECM. Terminal "B" connects to battery voltage.
Terminal "R" connects to the main relay.
Note: After the switch is initially turned to the START position, the switch will not return to the START position from
the ON position. The switch must be turned to the OFF position. The switch can then be turned to the START
position.
The ECM does not record diagnostic codes that occur with the key start switch.

Shift Lever

Direction/Speed Control (1)

Switches located on shift control handle

Direction/Speed Control (1) - Use the direction/speed control to select FORWARD speed, NEUTRAL position,
and REVERSE direction. Depress button (1C) in order to unlock the direction/speed control and move the
direction/speed control. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Direction and Speed Control" for more
information.

Shift Pattern
(R) Reverse Position - When the direction/speed control is in the R position, the
machine will move in reverse.

(N) Neutral Position - When the direction/speed control is in the N position, the wheels
are able to roll freely.

Note: When the direction/speed control is in the N position, the parking brake is not automatically engaged.
1, 2, and 3 - When the "1, 2, and 3" gears are selected, the transmission will shift up
(1) to the gear selected. For example, when gear 2 is selected, the transmission will shift
through gears 1 and 2.

(D) Drive Position - When the direction/speed control is in the D position, the machine
will propel forward at all speeds.

Hoist Lever (2)

The hoist system function is used in order to control the raising and the lowering of the truck body. The requests of
the operator are made through the "Hoist Lever". The "Hoist Lever" is located to the right of the shift lever. The
"Hoist Lever" allows the following positions:

Lower
Float
Hold
Raise

LOWER position - Hold the hoist control lever forward in order to lower the dump
body. When the lever is released, the lever will return to the FLOAT position.

FLOAT position - When the hoist control lever is in the FLOAT position, the dump
body will seek a level. The hoist control will stay in this position until the lever is
manually moved.

HOLD position - When the hoist control is in the HOLD position, the dump body will
not move. The hoist control will stay in this position until the lever is manually moved.

RAISE position - Hold the hoist control lever backward in order to raise the dump body
and empty the load. When the lever is released, the lever will return to the HOLD
position.

Secondary Steering Switch (12)

Secondary Steering Switch ((12)) - Depress the upper portion of this switch to test the
secondary steering pump. The pump is a battery-powered pump that allows steering
control of the machine in the event of engine failure.

Front Brake Temperature Switch

During normal operation, temperature switch (1) is closed to ground. The switch opens when the temperature of
the fluid system is greater than the specified value. The switch is closed when the switch is off the machine. The
"Front Brake Temperature Switch" connects to the ECM through contacts J2-52 and J1-70. Front brake
temperature switch reports brake temperature status to the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The
Transmission/Chassis ECM reports the brake temperature information to the indicator on the cluster of the dash.

Transmission Filter Bypass Switch

The bypass switch is controlled by the bypass pressure of the oil if the filter blocks up. When the filter becomes
plugged, the pressure of the oil opens the switch which allows the oil to bypass the filter.
The switch is one of the inputs that is used to drive the filter warning on the instrument cluster. The indicator is
turned ON when the "Transmission Filter Bypass" switch is in the closed position and the temperature of the
transmission oil is greater than 50 C (122 F) with the engine running.

Rear Brake Temperature Switch

During normal operation, temperature switch (1) is closed to ground. The switch opens when the temperature of
the fluid system is greater than the specified value. The switch is closed when the switch is off the machine. The
"Rear Brake Temperature Switch" connects to the ECM through contacts J2-53 and J1-70. Rear brake
temperature switch reports brake temperature status to the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The
Transmission/Chassis ECM reports the brake temperature information to the indicator on the cluster of the dash.
Output Transfer Gear (OTG) Pressure Switch

Pressure Switch for the Output Transfer Gear

The "OTG Pressure Switch" is an input to the ECM. The ECM determines if the pressure for the output transfer
gear is low. The pressure switch connects to the ECM through contacts J1-43 and J1-45. When the pressure of the
output transfer gear is low, the switch is open. When the pressure is high, the switch is closed.

Output Transfer Gear (OTG) Filter Bypass Switch

Filter Bypass Switch for the Output Transfer Gear

The "Filter Bypass Switch" is an input to the ECM. The bypass switch is located on the housing of the output
transfer gear filter. The bypass valve will open in order to protect the system if the filter is restricted. The bypass
switch provides an input signal to the ECM. The ECM will determine if the filter is restricted and the ECM will
inform the instrument cluster. The filter bypass switch connects to the ECM through contacts J1-41 and J1-45. See
Systems Operation, "Tattletale Function" for additional information for the "Output Transfer Gear Filter Plugged
Event" and "Low Output Transfer Gear Pressure Event".

Hydraulic Tank Filter Bypass Switch and Steer Tank Filter Bypass Switch
The filter bypass switch is an input to the ECM. The bypass switch is positioned on the
top of the appropriate tank. The bypass valve will open in order to protect the system if
the filter is restricted. The bypass switch provides an input signal to the ECM. The ECM
will determine if the filter is restricted and the ECM will inform the instrument cluster.
The steer tank filter bypass switch connects to the ECM through contacts J2-59 and J2-
22. The hydraulic tank filter bypass switch connects to the ECM through contacts J2-58
and J2-22.

The retarder lever is an input to the ECM. The retarder lever connects to the ECM through connector contacts J2-
46, J2-47, and J2-54. The sensor connects to ground at J1-45. The retarder tells the ECM the desired setting for
the retarder. The retarder has four positions. The OFF position, the LOW position, the MEDIUM position and the
HIGH position. Table 1 shows the state of the contacts in each of the positions. See Systems Operation, "Retarder
Function" for additional information on the function of the retarder lever.
The ECM records diagnostic codes with the retarder level as a CID 1227.

Service Brake Pedal Switch

Service Brake Pedal Switch

The service brake switch provides two inputs to the ECM. The first switch connects to contact J1-14. The switch
tells the ECM when the brake control valve is active. The operator activates the brake control valve with the brake
pedal. The ECM initiates the elevated shift function. The ECM then cancels the turn around shift function. The
switch is located on the foot operated brake control valve in front of the cab. The switch is open during normal
machine operation. The brake control valve is not active. The switch closes to ground when the brake control valve
is made active by the operator.
The switch has two contacts in the harness connector. One of the connector contacts is connected to the ECM.
The second connector contact is connected to J2-23. The switch is normally open.
The ECM records diagnostic codes with the service brake signal as a CID 0704. A record of the diagnostic code is
made while the machine is in operation.

Parking Brake Switch

Parking Brake Switch

The parking brake switch is an input of the ECM. The parking brake switch connects to connector contact J1-33.
The switch tells the ECM that the operator wants to activate the parking brake. The ECM activates the parking
brake by sending a signal in order to de-energize the parking brake solenoid. The parking brake is now engaged.
See Testing and Adjusting, "Parking Brake Function" for more information on the operation of the parking brake.
When the ECM initiates the parking brake function, the ECM cancels the turn around shift function. See Testing
and Adjusting, "Elevated Downshift Function" for more information.
The switch has four contacts in the harness connector. Contact 1 connects to the ECM connector J1-45. Contact 2
connects to the ECM connector J1-33. Contacts 3 and 4 are not used.
The ECM does not record diagnostic codes that occur with the parking brake switch.

Steering Pressure Switch

Steering Pressure Switch
The steering pressure switch is an input of the ECM. The switch connects to the contact J2-28. The switch tells the
ECM that the pressure is normal or low. When the steering pressure is low the ECM will activate the secondary
steering pump.
The switch has a normally open contact and a normally closed contact. One side of the normally open contact is
connected to the ECM. The other side is connected to ground through the ECM. The last connector contact of the
switch is not used. The switch is normally open.

Body Up Switch

The body up switch is an input to the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The body up switch signal connects to
connector contact J2-40 of the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The switch is a mechanical switch. The switch tells the
Transmission/Chassis ECM if the body is up or down. The switch also provides an input to the body up gear
limiting feature. An indicator is installed on the instrument cluster in order to inform the operator that the body is in
the UP position.
The switch has three contacts. Contact 1 connects to the Transmission/Chassis ECM at J1-69. Contact 2 connects
to the Transmission/Chassis ECM at J2-63. Contact 3 connects to the Transmission/Chassis ECM at J2-40

Dimmer Switch
Panel dimmer switch
This control will allow the operator to adjust the intensity of the Instrument Cluster and the CMPD. The "Dimmer
Switch" is connected to 2 pins on the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The ECM sends a signal based on switch inputs
over the CAN Data Link to the displays.

Location Code Enable (Grounded)

The location code enable is a grounded input signal to the Transmission/Chassis ECM that activates the location
code enable feature. J1-32 pin on the ECM connector is grounded.

Location Code 0 (Grounded)

The location code pin number 0 is a grounded input signal that establishes the ECM, is dedicated to the machine
operation. J1-26 pin on the Transmission/Chassis ECM connector is grounded.
