INI BEE and Dimpy Butterfly lived in a
jungle together. Dimpy was pretty but
very proud of herself. She had beautiful,
pinkish red wings. She flew around the whole
jungle showing them off.
Mini Bee’s wings were not so beautiful. She did
not appear as attractive as Dimpy. Dimpy always

teased her and quarrelled with her over petty
things.
Mini could not help. She would get
disappointed and wonder why she did not have
pretty wings.
The birthday of Dabbu Tiger was coming close.
He was the king of the jungle. He announced that
anyone who gave him the best gift, will be
rewarded.
Wasting no time, all animals started looking for
gifts.
Mini thought, ‘I am so small. What can I gift the
king?’
Then she got an idea, “I collect nector from
flowers and make honey that is eaten and liked by
all. If I give that to the king, it will be a nice
birthday gift.”
On the other hand, Dimpy got an idea too. “Why
don't I gift my beautiful wings to the king. He will
be happy and I will get lots of prizes.”
She quickly went to Chinki Mouse and said to
her, “Take out my wings with your sharp teeth.”

C hinki tried telling her not to get her wings

pulled out. Without her wings she will not be
able to do any thing.
Nobody will be able to recognise her and she
will be unable to fly.
But Dimpy did not listen to her. She was just
thinking of the prize that she would get. She said to
Chinki, “Please pull my wings out.”
Chinki did as said. Then she thought, ‘Dimpy
is not recognisable now. All her beauty has
vanished.’
Now Dimpy was looking very ugly as her

pinkish red wings were no more.
Chinky said, “Dimpy, you are looking ugly
without your wings.”
But Dimpy did not pay attention. She thought
that she would get back her wings in a few days
and she will get a prize from the king.
She was highly delighted at the very thought.
She went to her friends to give them this
good news. But all her friends laughed on seeing
her.
Tiktik Mouse, Anty Ant, Kitty Bat were all
giving her a strange look. Nobody recognised her.
Dimpy said, “Why are you all laughing? I am
Dimpy, your friend. Look, here are my wings. I will

give them to the king.”
Nobody believed her. Everyone said, “Our
friend Dimpy is very beautiful. You look very ugly.
You do not have those beautiful wings
as well. How can you be that same friend of
ours?”
Dimpy was annoyed. She said, “Good enough.
I will sort you all out. When the king will see my
wings, he will reward me well. Then I will show
you all.”
The king's birthday arrived. All reached his
palace and started gifting him. Dimpy Butterfly
and Mini Bee also came. But nobody recognised
Dimpy there.
When she gifted her wings to the king, he said,
“What do I do of these wings? They are meant for
flying.
“They look best when they are seen on colourful
flowers. They are of no use to me.”
Dimpy's pride was hurt badly listening to this.
She lost her beauty for greed. She could not even
get a prize. She cried and cried.

O n the other hand, Mini had collected a lot of

nector from flowers which had now become
honey.
She gave the honey to the king. The king tasted
it and found it very delicious.
He said to Mini, “I did not have such a thing
before. This sweet is only with you. You collect
nector from flowers and then make honey. No one
else can do this work. You work very hard, so you
must get the prize.”
Mini was in high spirits. She got lots of
prizes. ●

INI AND Tini were 2 mice. Both lived at
Fatty Cat's place with their parents. As
night descended, both Mini and Tini went
8 Champak
into Fatty's kitchen and feasted on whatever they
found. They not only made mischief but also
displaced things of the kitchen here and there.
Fatty was highly troubled. But naughty mice
could not be caught.
When Fatty ran behind them, they showed a face
and vanished.
One day, Fatty got a trap and placed it in the
kitchen at night.

M ini and Tini got trapped. Both were shedding

tears on each other’s shoulders helplessly.
Suddenly, Fatty's son Kutkut came running.
Mummy was standing there.
Kutkut asked, “Where have these new guests
come from?”
“Son, they are not guests but rogues. Both have
created lot of trouble. Now they will know,” and
mummy left.
Kutkut found both the mice very cute. He sat
near the trap.
“ My cute little guests, why do you trouble
mummy?” Kutkut shook the trap.
“Kutkut brother, we promise we will not trouble
you anymore. Please free us from the trap,” the
mice pleaded.
Kutkut broke into laughter on seeing them
holding their ears, “Ok, from today, you are my
friends. I will free you but promise that you will
not trouble mummy.”
Both Tini and Mini nodded their heads in
agreement.
Kutkut looked left and right and opened the
door of the trap slowly. Mini and Tini escaped as
fast as possible.
December (First) 2009 9
When mummy came there after some time, the
mice were not seen.
“Where are both of them?” mummy asked,
looking around. Standing at a corner, Kutkut was
smiling.
Mummy turned Kutkut's ears, “So, you also
have joined their gang. You have helped them flee.
Now you will be punished.”
“Mummy, please spare me. Both are my friends.
They have promised me that they would never do
mischief again.”
Mummy went away.

I t was Kutkut's birthday next day. The table was

laid with many tasty snacks. Lots of friends of
Kutkut came. They ate a feast and went away. Lots
of snacks were leftover.
The smell of these snacks reached Mini and Tini
at night. But they restrained from creating mischief.
Fatty was highly disturbed in the morning.
What has happened to Mini and Tini? They did not
come to have such tasty snacks. Everything is at its
place.
On the other hand Mini and Tini were making
some other plans.
“Kutkut has saved our lives and made us
friends. We did not even present her a birthday
gift,” with her hands on her head, Mini said.
Tini smiled, “Don't you worry. I prepared a gift
for her at night.”
“At night? But what?” Mini was surprised.
“This 4-coloured shirt,” Tini showed the shirt in
her hand, “I have made this by cutting 4 old shirts
of papa.”
“Wow! This 4-coloured shirt is really looking
10 Champak
good. Now go, quick. Kutkut might go to
school.”
As both peeped out of the burrow, Kutkut was
seen drinking milk in the kitchen.
Both came quickly and started biting Kutkut's
feet. Kutkut looked down in scare.
“My cute friends, why did you not come to my
birthday?” Kutkut took them up with love and
made them sit on the table. He kept a big box of
cake in front of them.
Taking his hands behind, Tini said, “We do not
want the cake.”
“Ok, but why did you take your hand away?”
Kutkut pulled his hand in front.
Seeing a box in his hand, he asked, “What is
there in it?”
“A 4-coloured shirt for you,” said Tini.
“4-coloured shirt?” Kutkut quickly opened the
box.
“Wow! How beautiful!” Kutkut ran to mummy
shouting.
“Mummy look, this 4-coloured shirt. My cute
friends have given.”
Mini and Tini too were very happy seeing
Kutkut pleased.
Both took the big box of cake in their hands and
dragged it into their burrow. ●

EEPALIVAN. It was Sunday evening. There
was a road jam. Biku and Bablu Monkey
bought some things from the market. They
took a shortcut and went home. On the way, they
met Didi and Vidi jackals.
“Get ready, someone is coming,” Didi whis-
pered.
Didi and Vidi put on their masks. Biku and
Bablu came close.
“Halt. Hand over all your things or I will kill
you,” Didi said.
Vidi snatched away their bags.
Biku and Bablu started trembling and looked to
someone for help. But no one
was there nearby. The
whole place was
lonely.

Fighting
“Take the bag and spare us. We will be
thankful,” Biku said.
Both threw the bags and fled. Biku followed
Bablu. Such incidents started happening in the
jungle everyday. All including Songi and Mongi
rabbits were worried.
The 2 rabbits made a plan. They went to the
market and bought gifts for the criminals— boxing
gloves with remote.
In the evening, they took the shortcut route and
left for home.
“The rogues will be taught a lesson from the
gift. We will have fun... ha... ha... ha... ha...” Songi
and Mongi were walking away delighted. Both
holding a box in hand, swinging it in fun.

Suddenly, they
heard a voice, “Halt,
what is there in
your box?”
Mongi stopped
laughing suddenly
and said, “It has a
beautiful gift,
brother. If you
want, you can take
it or leave it.”
As they got a
chance, Songi and
Mongi threw the
box and fled. They
hid in the bushes to
see what happens
next.
Didi and Vidi
were very happy
seeing gift boxes.
They went in the
bushes. As they
opened the boxes, 2 boxing gloves sprung out with
a jerk. They were remote-operated and they boxed
terrifically.
Songi then pressed the remote. Gloves started
hitting Didi and Vidi non-stop fighting.
Both screamed with pain and said, “Someone
come to save us.”
When Songi and Mongi heard their screams,
they came running. They too boxed Didi and Vidi
after switching on the remote.
As they lifted the veil, they saw they were Didi
and Vidi.

Songi said, “Promise that you will not play
mischief or my gloves will kill you.”
“Please forgive us. Now we will give up bad
habits,” Vidi and Didi apologised.
By then many animals of Deepalivan reached
there. They understood all on seeing the swollen
face of Didi and Vidi. All animals appreciated
Songi and Mongi. They found their things back
too.
Giving the gloves to Vidi, Songi said, “I gift
these gloves and remote to you. Now you must give
up bad habits and become good.” ●

S MOREO gained consciousness, he found
himself in an unknown place. He looked
around. There was nothing except sea and
thick forest all around till the eyes could see. The
sky was absolutely clear.
Moreo gradually remembered the past days.
He lived on the shores of the sea. His father
“You cheat leopard, shed your anger and use
your brain. Because of you we are starving. If you
had not fought with Bablu Tiger and Cheeku
Rabbit, we would not have been ousted from
Champakvan,” said Jacky Jackal.
“You all must stop arguing and think of finding
something to eat,” Jhaptu asserted.
“Let me earn some food by mimicking,” Jacky
suggested.
On the other hand, Vinni Lamb was walking
fast after having separated from his friends.
“Wait Vinni, I am coming too,” Jacky mimicked.
Vinni stopped.
With great speed all the 3 nabbed him and
finished him.
Similarly, the 3 made someone or the other their
prey everyday. There was panic in Champakvan.
“What am I hearing, Gabru? Who is this second
one born who has created such a scare among
animals. Bring him soon in front of me or you
will be punished,” Babban Lion ordered Gabru
Rhino.

Crime and Punishment

by Rajendra Kumar
Bholu Donkey was going home alone.
'My artificial leg keeps falling. It is going to be
dark and home is far away,' Bholu thought.
“Bholu...” Jacky mimicked the donkey’s braying.
Bholu stopped. ‘Good, I have found a friend. Two
are better than one. Now the journey will be easier,’
Bholu thought and was happy.
“Bholu, you will be our prey today,” Thaggu
laughed. “We have tired eating lambs, rabbits, pigs.
Today, we will change our taste,” Jhaptu said
greedily.
“At least, try to find out Bholu's last wish,”
Jacky smiled.
Bholu started laughing on seeing them. The
3 were surprised.
“Why are you laughing?” Jacky asked.
Bholu thought for a while. ‘My plan seems to be
working. Now I will try provoking them and work
on my plan.’
“You fools, what will you do of my bones? I
don't have any flesh or blood on me,” Bholu said
fearlessly.
They got angry and Thaggu pierced his teeth in
Bholu's artificial leg.
Shrieking with pain Thaggu shouted, “Uee, my
teeth have broken.”
Both kept wondering, 'Jhaptu also did the same
and met the same fate. Bholu was having a good
time. Jacky was upset.'
“Come, you too fill your stomach,” Bholu teased
Jacky inviting him to eat him. The artificial leg was
injured but he was still walking fast.

C heeku and Gabru were talking to each other, “I

think, some runaway animal is taking revenge
on us.”
“You are right, Cheeku. Thaggu, Jhaptu and
Jacky have created havoc in the jungle,” he said to
Bholu.
On seeing a limping Bholu they asked, “Who
has rendered you like this?” Bholu told them all the
story. Then all the 3 made a plan.
Jhaptu groaned with pain, “My jaw is paining
terribly.”
December (First) 2009 33
Thaggu said, “How can this be possible that a
living animal does not have blood and flesh.”
“Why can't it be, you fools. Your brains have
rusted eating without efforts for so long,” and
Bholu threw his artificial leg on Jhaptu. All the
3 were shocked and shouted, “You have again
come!”
Suddenly, they heard a loud roar. All the 3 ran
but could not run as Babban Lion, Gabru, Cheeku
and other animals had surrounded them.
“We made a mistake by leaving you alive
earlier,” Gabru said angrily.
“Hand over these rogues to us.
“We will take revenge from them,” the injured
animals spoke together.
“Friends, be cool and think. If we also become
violent like them, there will be panic everywhere.
They did as they thought.
So we must change our thinking and live
lovingly and happily. If you treat your enemy with
love, it is natural that he will change too,” Cheeku
explained.

A fter he finished, all the animals left. This made

Thaggu, Jhaptu and Jacky cry. They said,
“Friends, we had thought that we would rule the
jungle by creating terror. But by forgiving us you
have changed our thinking.
“We are ashamed of ourselves. Punish us as you
want to,” the 3 were standing with folded hands.
Cheeku said, “Friends, punish them.”
Bholu spoke up, “Bholu, pick up my artificial
leg and give me. I cannot balance any longer
standing on 3 legs.”
Everyone burst out laughing. ●

“Yes aunty. Tell me what is the work?”
“I am finished with flour at home. Can you get me

“Why not? Give me money and a bag. I will get it

N immi handed him the money and bag. Chintu

On the way, he met Blacky Jackal. He too stopped
Chintu, “Where are you going, Chintu?”
“I am going to take flour from the mill for Nimmi
Aunty,” Chintu replied.
“That is good. The letter box is on the way. Post my
letter in it. I am not keeping well.”
“Don't worry, uncle. I will do that,” taking the
letter from uncle, Chintu proceeded.
He first put the letter in the letter box and then
went to the mill. The mill was overcrowded. It was
taking time but he bought the flour and gave it to
Nimmi Aunty. Aunty blessed him, “I wish you
happiness, son.”
It was evening by the time he reached home. Pinky
was upset and walking up and down waiting for
Chintu. When she saw him, she said, “Where were
you? I am waiting since so long. I was worried.”
“You worry uselessly, mother. Nimmi Aunty had
called for some flour. I had gone to pick that up. The
mill was crowded and so it got late. Give me meals. I
am hungry,” parking his cycle, Chintu said.
“Why do you work for free for everyone, son?
Don't you see that I work hard day and night for your

Chintu quickly took mother in arms, “I study with
all my heart and soul and come first in class. You
know mother, my teacher says, “You help yourself by
helping others.”
“What nonsense! Has anyone ever come and
inquired what we need?” Pinky said.
“It is not good to help others in the hope that he
should help us in return. I like doing all this. Nimmi

will? All in Champakvan are ours, mother. Why do

greedy. After getting
their work done it,

murmuring to herself,
Pinky went to bring
food for Chintu.
Chintu was a carefree soul. It was summer time.
Viral fever was spreading in all homes. Chintu too
was in its grip. He was down with high fever.
One day, when the fever came in control, Pinky
said, “I did not know Chintu that animals of
Champakvan loved you so much. Not seeing you out
one day they all were concerned. Blacky Jackal went
running and brought the doctor.”
Chintu answered in a faint voice, “Really!”
“Yes son, your Nimmi Aunty comes everyday with
lots of oranges for you. She insists on giving you fruit
juice so that you recover fast. Come on, drink this
juice,” handing him a glass of juice, Pinky said.
“Chintu Monkey has given many story books and
flowers. He was saying, “Chintu is very fond of
reading. Give him these books to read when he gets
well. He will feel better.”
Chintu saw that they were his favourite story
books and comics. He was too happy to get them and
immediately started reading them.
Pinky insisted, “You are weak just now, son.
Reading will strain your eyes. Get well and then read.

“Don't worry mother. You think like this because
you have seen a lot of trouble in life,” Chintu said

The king tried many ways to

but nothing worked.
Recession In order to reduce

by Vivek Chakravorty Singh sold off his car
and started on foot to
inspect the forest.
One day when he stepped out of his palace for
inspection, the poet of the jungle Tarachand Parrot
looked at him and said, “With recession hitting, the
king had to sell of his car.”
Hearing the parrot's poem, the birds and
animals present there started laughing while
hiding their faces.
The king got annoyed and roared with anger,
“You foolish parrot, the entire forest is in the grip
of recession and there is possibility of drought and
you are reciting a poem.”
“It is your duty to solve these problems as you
rule the forest,” Tarachand again sang.
“Surely, I am the king of the forest but do the
birds and animals of the jungle not have any duty
towards the jungle? Poets pull the attention of all
their listeners towards the problems and there
solutions in their poems but you just write useless
poems,” King Sher Singh said.
“You have made me realise my duties. I will try
to solve the problems somehow.” He again recited
and flew away.

F or next 2 days Tarachand could not be seen by

anyone. The third day, Tarachand went to King
Sher Singh and said, “Your Majesty, I have thought
of plans to emerge both out of recession and
drought. I would request you to call all the animals
and birds of the jungle here. In front of them I will
describe the solution to these problems.”
“All right.”
Very soon, all the birds and animals of the
jungle gathered there.
“Friends, kindly listen carefully and think
seriously about what I am saying. Do not think
December (First) 2009 63
that I am speaking ill about anyone or making
fun.”
As Tarachand stopped speaking, all animals
started whispering to one another.
“As you all know that we are facing recession
these days and there are possibilities of drought
in our jungle too. Therefore, our prime
responsibility is to use food very carefully so that
during drought conditions we have adequate food
with us.
“Our friend crow eats half of the things and
spill half of them. So, I would suggest that crows
should eat in 2 batches. The food that is spilled by
first batch can be had by the second batch,” said
Tarachand.
All the crows got wild at Tarachand's
suggestion. They shouted, “You want us to have
others’ leftover as food?”
“No, I suggest that let your children have
first and then the elder crows can have the
rest. I suppose you will not have problem in hav-
ing the leftover of your children,” Tarachand
explained.
The crows nodded in affirmation hesitantly.
“Bulbul, maina, sparrow and we parrots have
fresh fruits from the tree. None of us has full fruit.
We just have a bit of the fruit and the rest decays on
the tree itself. So I suggest that a fruit should be
eaten by one family at one time. This will increase
brotherhood and the fruit also will not be
destroyed.”
“The idea is wonderful,” everyone praised
Tarachand's suggestion.
“Per day diet of big animals like elephants, bears
should be decided. This will reduce our importing
food from other jungles,” Tarachand said.
Small birds and animals welcomed the
suggestion but bigger animals like bears and
elephants opposed it.

F inally, King Sher Singh had to interrupt, “There

are possibilities of drought in our jungle.
Therefore, we must reduce our intake of all
eatables. If in the interest of the jungle, you cannot
do this, you can leave the jungle and go.”
Hearing the stern warning of King Sher Singh
elephants and bears stopped opposing.
When everyone was quiet, Tarachand again
December (First) 2009 65
spoke, “Animals like jackal and the fox who are
busy stealing others things, should be given the
work of digging wells so that they get employment
and their habit of stealing goes away. This will also
be good in a way that our jungle will have
adequate wells with enough water before drought.
It will be your duty to keep watch on them, Your
Majesty.”
“Good, but you tell me Tarachand, you have
given duties to all birds and animals but what work
are you doing?” King asked smilingly.
“Your Majesty, with the medium of my poems I
will send the message of brotherhood and saving to
animals and birds.
“It is recession time, adopt the saving method,
reduce expenditure and share food,” he recited.
All clapped when Tarachand said. ●

I
T WAS King Sher Singh’s birthday.
An announcement was made in
Champakvan that whoever gives
the best gift to the king, will in return
be rewarded handsomely.
All animals started looking for gifts
as per their choice.
The king was not educated enough but was
liberal and carefree. If he was happy with
someone, he would shower him with abundant
wealth.

I n the evening the king arranged for a big party at

his palace. The tables were filled with delicious
snacks.
Everyone had lots and lots of snacks and then
collected to present their gifts to the king.
“Come one by one and present your gift to me,”
Sher Singh said.
Chunmun Mouse ran up and extended a packet
of cheese to Sher Singh.
When the animals laughed, Blacky Bear
signalled them to keep quiet.
“No one will make fun of the gifts whether big
or small or you will be thrown out of the party,”
Sher Singh said angrily.
Gillo Squirrel came with a basket full of
almonds and walnuts. She kept it close to him and
went away.
The king happily ate almonds filling them in
his fist.

Jojo Jackal was a scientist. Since last 2 years he
was working in a gun-making industry. He gifted
Sher Singh a gun which could kill an enemy within
a distance of 100 km.
“Your Majesty, I have prepared a suit for you
working the whole night,” a dozing Gappi Owl

came in front and said.
Seeing the suit king quickly opened his clothes
to wear what Gappi had given.
It was an honour for Gappi. Tears of happiness
rolled from his eyes.
In the same way animals kept coming one by
one and gifts piled up in front of the king.
“Is there anyone left?” the king asked at last.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Meeku Rabbit said and ran
up to the king with great speed.

H e handed over a bundle wrapped in an old

paper to the king. King started opening the
bundle slowly.
All animals were watching surprisingly as to
what was Meeku's gift to the king.
“Books!” everyone was wonder struck as the
bundle opened.
“Administration, management, politics and
economy... so many books. Good, but I am fifth
class fail,” the king said.
Handing over another packet to him Meeku
replied, “That is why I have got fifth and sixth class
books. Your Majesty, “There is no friends better
than books.
“You are head of the state and wise and
courageous too. It is necessary for you to be more
educated than us,” Meeku suggested though was
scared.
Sher Singh was enlightened on hearing
Meeku. He decided that he would start studying
further.
He declared Meeku’s gift the best and
appointed Meeku as the Chief Adviser of
Champakvan. ●

Bullet as Gift
by Raj Kumar Dhar

P
RINCE, SON of King Sher Singh roared in
anger, “You proud rock, I am asking you the
last time whether you will get off my way or
not?”
“I will not. Why are you wasting time on me? I
have told you so many times that I will not give
way. Why are you eating my head? What can I do if
there is a pit on both sides? Why should I make way
for you animals? You may go from whichever side
to drink water in the river. Get going from here.
Don't spoil my mood. Let me rest,” the rock yelled.
74 Champak
“Now you will not be able to rest. I will destroy
you. Save yourself if you can. I pleaded you with
folded hands that due to summer the ponds and
lakes have dried. The river, which has water, is on
the other side. If you had given way animals could
have had water, but you have not left your
arrogance. Now, you will surely be punished,”
Prince said.
The rock laughed loudly and said, “How can
you punish me? What can you do to me? Don't talk
big?”
“Well, I will not talk to you at all. Be careful,”
and Prince took out bullets from the dynamite.
The rock thought that Prince was trying to scare
him with a toy. It did not bother.
“These are bullets of dynamite. I will blow you
off with them,” Prince threatened, showing him the
bullet.
“Oh, you will blow me off. Try it,” the rock
laughed aloud. Then she said, “Threatening me to
blow off by showing a toy! You cannot harm me
anyways.”

P rince could not tolerate this arrogance. He filled

the bullet and blasted the rock. The rock was
reduced to pieces.
While dying, the rock said, “I thought, you were
showing me a toy to scare me. You have really
blown me to pieces with the dynamite. I was
wrong. You asked just a little space. If I had
given that, I would not have been reduced to this
state. I have got the result of my doing,” and the
rock died.
“Long live the Prince,” the animals assembled
there shouted victory for the Prince. “Now we will
December (First) 2009 75
be able to drink the river water. This wicked rock
had blocked our way. You have done a favour on us
by blowing off the rock.”
“This was my duty. I did not want to blow
the rock off but I requested it many times to give
us way but it was too arrogant. I had to take this
step.”
“You did the right thing. One, who comes in the
way of good work, should be taught a lesson.”
The old bear asked, “Where did you get these
bullets from?”
“They were gifted to me by my soldier uncle
Dahar Singh,” Prince replied. “I had to teach the
rock a lesson.
Months back while sleeping one night I was
murmuring 'bullets, bullets.' In the morning when
uncle asked me, I requested him to gift me bullets
of dynamite on my birthday. I promised him that I
will not misuse the bullets. So he gifted them to
me.”
Uncle bear smiled and then celebrated for the
opening along with other animals.

W hen Dahar Singh came to know that Prince

had utilised the bullets for good work, he
praised him. The king too was happy with the good
work of his son. He was satisfied that his son
understood the problems of his subjects. He would
prove a good king in future. But he advised him
that he was too young just now. He should stay
away from gunpowder and weapons.
Now the animals could drink water from the
river. The old and weak ones were more at an
advantage as they had to earlier take the way
around the rock to reach the river for water. ●

M
EEKU RABBIT had a
bad habit of wasteful
spending. Whenever
he got money from his aunty or
any relatives, he used to spend it
right on the same day without

giving any thought on for what
he was spending the money.
His parents were quite
worried about his bad habit of
wasteful spending.
One day, it was his birthday.
Meeku Rabbit was very happy
on his birthday. It was day for
celebration at his home and in
his school. His uncle gave him a

beautiful plastic TV toy as his

birthday gift. It was a blue-
coloured TV with white screen
and 3 red buttons. It was an exact
replica of a real TV.
Meeku Rabbit asked his
uncle, “How does it work?”
His uncle replied, “It has a
slot. You have to put coins in it.
The day it is full, it will start
working.”
Actually, it was a piggy
bank in the shape of a TV.
His uncle inaugurated his
piggy bank by putting a coin in
his piggy bank. The moment
the coin was put in the piggy
bank, the coin's reflection
appeared on the TV screen. His

uncle said, “See, the colour has changed. When it is
full, your TV will start working.”
Innocent Meeku Rabbit was convinced. He
started putting the money in the piggy bank. He
daily checked the change in the colour on the
screen of his TV toy.
One day, Meeku Rabbit was very excited
when he saw his TV toy was almost filled with the
coins.
He thought, 'Now I want only couple of few
more coins to make it totally full and my TV will
start working. I can operate it whenever I want. I
will impress all my friends with my TV.'
But suddenly, his TV toy fell off from his hands
and its TV screen got a crack.
Meeku Rabbit started crying. He went to his
uncle. He was still crying. His uncle made him quiet
and repaired the TV screen with quickfix solution.
His uncle said, “Look Meeku, I am afraid
now that your TV will not work. But just think
because of your TV toy how much money you have
saved?”
80 Champak
“Does it mean had I not saved this much of
money, I would have spent the money on nothing?”
asked Meeku Rabbit.
“Exactly, did you notice, otherwise how much
money you would have wasted on nothing? Now I
will open a bank account for you in the post office
so that you get into habit of regular saving. And you
can use your saved money on something which
really is useful for you,” said his uncle.
Meeku Rabbit asked, “So, what do we do with
this TV toy?”
His uncle clarified, “Come on! This is just a
toy to make you understand the good habit of
saving money. See, there is no machine inside this
TV toy.”
Meeku Rabbit understood everything and
realised that because of an ordinary looking TV toy,
he had understood the importance of habit of
saving money. ●
