Brief Overview of the Nodes

2 Brief Overview of the Nodes

The nodes described in this guide can all be used as modular nodes in the EDA
1200 system, which means that they can be installed at a Central Office (CO)
and OutSide Plant (OSP). Subracks designed for the physical installation of
the nodes are also available, making it possible to install the nodes in flexible
configurations adapted to specific solutions.

EDN612: The EDN612 is a 12-port VDSL2 IP DSLAM. It is also capable of

running ADSL, ADSL2 or ADSL2+. An internal splitter-filter is built in EDN612ef
but not in EDN612p and EDN612i.

ESN212: The ESN212 is a Gigabit Ethernet Layer-2 aggregation switch. It

is available in two variants:

ESN212 with 8 electrical 1 Gbps Ethernet ports and 4 Small Form-factor

Pluggable (SFP) ports.

ESN212f with 1 Gbps Ethernet ports and 12 Small Form-factor Pluggable

(SFP) ports.

ESN204g: The ESN204g is a Gigabit Ethernet Layer-2 aggregation switch, with

4 electrical 1 Gbps Ethernet ports and a GPON uplink.

EPN210: The EPN210 is a -48 V DC power rod mounted power distribution

unit, capable of distributing power to 10 devices.

See the System Descriptions for further details on the nodes.

The nodes can be mounted in subracks and combined as required by the

network design. The width of the nodes are given in Table 1 on page 3.

4.2 Pre-Assembled Subracks

Pre-assembled subracks are supplied with the following nodes and with cabling
already connected:

Ethernet connections from the IP DSLAMs and IP POTS to the ESN212

(or ESN204g) switch

0 TSR 432 120/xxx cable (1000 Base-T Patch cable STP)

Power connections from the EPN210 to the IP DSLAMs and IP POTS

0 TSR 263 70/xxx cable (EDA Power cable standard)

The IP DSLAM or IP POTS on the left of a pre-assembled subrack is numbered

1, and has an Ethernet connection to port 1 of the ESN212 (or ESN204g), and
a power connection to port 1 of the EPN210.

The IP DSLAM or IP POTS numbering increases towards the right of the

subrack. The ESN212 (or ESN204g) is installed after the last IP DSLAM or
IP POTS, and the EPN210 is installed after the ESN212. If dummy nodes
are used, these are installed between the IP DSLAMs and the switch, or in
place of the EPN210.

Figure 1 on page 9 shows a fully equipped 96-line ETSI subrack solution

(without splitters) with eight EDN612 IP DSLAMs, one ESN212 switch, and
one EPN210 Power Distribution Node.

Figure 2 on page 10 shows a 60-line ETSI subrack solution, with five external
splitter-filters, five EDN612 IP DSLAMs, one ESN212 switch, and one EPN210
Power Distribution Node.

Figure 3 on page 10 shows a 48-line ETSI GPON solution, with four EDN612 IP
DSLAMs, four dummy nodes for spacing and airflow, one ESN204g switch, and
another dummy node.

The numbering of the IP DSLAMs or IP POTS is included for clarity. The IP

DSLAM or IP POTS numbers correspond to the numbers of the ESN212 and

Power Requirements

5 Power Requirements

EDN612, ESN212, and ESN204g use -48 V DC power.

Either a High Ohmic distribution system, or an independent power distribution

(Standard -48 V DC telecom supply) according to ETSI EN 300 132-2 v2.1.2
can be used. Furthermore, the nodes can operate with extended voltage range
(-40.0 V DC to -57 V DC).

Using EPN210 for the power distribution is recommended, as illustrated in

Figure 4 on page 13. A 15A high breakable fuse is required to ensure over
current protection of the nodes. Note that due to EMC limits, an EPN210 cannot
be used with an ESN204g.

Powering Off Nodes:

The nodes do not have a power switch. Powering off a node is done by
disconnecting the power cable from the node.

Figure 4 Recommended Power Distribution

If another power distribution unit is used instead of the EPN210, it is possible to

use TSR 263 65/xxx cables (EDA Power Cable Open End).

A solution to omit the EPN210, and use a 5:1 power distribution cable as
illustrated in Figure 5 on page 14. A 10 to 15A high breakable fuse is required
to ensure over current protection of the nodes.

Environmental and Space Requirements

6 Environmental and Space Requirements

The nodes comply with the following storage, transportation and operation
standards. The operation category is also designated stationary in-use at
weather-protected locations.

ETS 300 019-1-1: Storage, class 1.2

ETS 300 019-1-2: Transportation, class 2.3

ETS 300 019-1-3: Operation, class 3.3

GR-3108-CORE class 3 operational temperature range (-40C to 75C).

Storage class 1.2 means tested for storage in a weather-protected area, not
temperature-controlled.

Transportation class 2.3 means tested for public transportation.

Operation class 3.3 means tested for not partly temperature-controlled location.

Do!

The temperature within a rack assembly may be higher than the ambient
room temperature. Check that the rack environment temperature is within the
specified operating temperature range.

The nodes can be mounted in Ericsson subracks (19 or ETSI racks). For
detailed information, see the EDN312 Based Subracks Installation Guide.

Mounting in the rack must be done so that there is sufficient space for airflow
around the node, as shown in Figure 6 on page 16.

dust. See Section 7.6 on page 32 for more information concerning installation
of dust plugs.

6.2 Electrostatic Discharge Protection

The EDA nodes are designed to be robust with regards to Electrostatic
Discharge (ESD). However, it is recommended to use ESD protection (such as
a wrist strap) during node installation or maintenance (for example when setting
the Switch ID or replacing a fan unit).

Installation

7 Installation

The installation of the nodes must be done according to the network design.
This section describes the steps required to install the nodes.

7.1 Preparation of the Subrack for Installation

The subrack is delivered in a cardboard box, with assembly instructions
included. An assembled empty subrack is shown in Figure 8 on page 19.

Figure 8 Assembled ETSI subrack

7.2 Grounding the Subrack

Internal grounding in the subrack is provided using a Common Bonding
Network (CBN or Mesh Bonding Network). The subrack is also capable of
being connected to an Isolated Bonding Network ground (IBN or single point
ground) on subrack or cabinet level.

Ground the subrack in accordance with national specifications. In North

America the EDA1200 chassis should be grounded using a 6 AWG copper wire
attached with an appropriate wire lug to one of the screws on the side of the
chassis that mounts the round rails.

7.3 Preparing the Nodes for Mounting

EDN612 and EPN210 do not require any preparation before mounting. For
ESN212 and ESN204g, the Switch ID should be set (if applicable) before
mounting.

6/1531-LZA 101 464-V1 Uen A 2010-01-05 19

EDA 1200 Generic Node Installation Guide

7.3.1 Setting the Switch ID in ESN212 and ESN204g

When the Switch ID (SID) value is not zero, the node controller in the ECN will
consider the ESN212 or ESN204g and the underlying nodes as a flexible block,
with the SID equal to the value of the DIP switch. The network design sets the
SID value. Note that value 255 is reserved and cannot be used.

The DIP Switch is located at the top of the ESN212 or ESN204g, under the Fan
assembly. The DIP switch has eight on-off switches which set a binary value
(0 to 255, though 255 is reserved).

When a switch is set to on, the associated bit is set to 1. Similarly, when a
switch is set to off, the associated bit is set to 0.

Table 6 on page 20 shows some examples of switch settings and the resulting
SIDs.

7.5.4 SFP Cages for ESN212

The SFP cages enable the use of different SFP modules for the ESN212
switch depending on the requirements. These ports may be used as uplinks
or as downlinks. Available module list please contact the local Ericsson
representative.

SFP FCLF-8521-3 in combination with ESN212 application SW version R3A37

or higher enables variable speed on the port (10/100/1000 Mbps). The module
with an earlier SW version, or the R3A37 version with a different module, will
result in a fixed 1000 Mbps speed.

The LEDs for port 9 to 12 will not flash to indicate activity as port 1 to 8. LEDs
for port 9 to 12 will only indicate Link up (on) or Link down (off).

Every 5 seconds the SFP modules inserted in port 9 to 12 will be polled to

detect the module. The polling may give a delay in Link Up/Link Down alarms
with up to 5 seconds. Additional the Link status and LED may also be 5
seconds delayed from the cable or module is inserted or changed.

Installation

7.5.4.1 Installing an SFP Transceiver

Figure 16 Inserting an SFP Transceiver into a Slot

To install an SFP transceiver, do the following:

1. Consider network and cabling requirements to select an appropriate SFP

transceiver type. The SFP slots support 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX, or
1000BASE-LH transceivers for fiber optic connections to other devices.

2. Insert the transceiver with the optical connector facing outward and the slot
connector facing down. Note that SFP transceivers are keyed so they can
only be installed in one orientation.

3. Slide the SFP transceiver into the slot until it clicks into place.

Note: SFP transceivers are hot-swappable. The ESN212 does not need to
be powered off before installing or removing a transceiver. However,
always first disconnect the network cable before removing a transceiver.

7.6 Inserting Dust Plugs

The nodes can potentially be installed in dusty environments. Dust can then
enter through an unused port, and to protect the ports from dust, dust plugs can
be inserted. Dust plugs are optional but available to protect the following:

EDN612 Ethernet uplink ports.

ESN212 and ESN204g console ports, electrical Ethernet ports and

electrical power input ports.

ESN212 SFP cages.

EPN210 electrical power output ports.

The product number for a packet of dust plugs is SDF 111 164/15. Each packet
contains 15 dust plugs.

If required, insert dust plugs into the nodes unused ports.

8.3 Configuring the ESN204g for GPON

ESN204g is designed for installation in an EDA1500 GPON network. The
following describes the basic configuration required for the EDA1500 GPON
network, the ESN204g and the ECNx30.

Refer to the GPON description in EDA 1200 System Description for more
information.

8.3.1 Configuring the ESN204g

ESN204g is a plug-and-play node. No configuration is required, unless
multicast is being used.

6/1531-LZA 101 464-V1 Uen A 2010-01-05 37

EDA 1200 Generic Node Installation Guide

To configure the ESN204g for multicast, enter the following command in the
ESN204g, using rcli or the serial connection:

esn204g#igs gsq-unicast-response enable

Further information on ESN204g CLI commands can be found in the ESN212

and ESN204g CLI User Guide. Further information on using rcli and the serial
connection can be found in the EDA 1200 Generic Node User Guide.

If configuration using a serial connection is desired, a shielded console cable

must be used if full EMC class B protection is wanted.

8.3.2 Configuring the ECNx30

The following procedure describes how to configure the ECNx30 to recognize

and take management control of the ESN204g:

1. Ensure that the ECN has the correct software installed for EDA 1200
release 4.1 R1A or higher.

2. Ensure that the ECN is connected to the BLM network, using a topology
described in the ECN User Guide.

3. No additional configuration should be required in the ECN. Once the

ESN204g is configured in the EDA 1500 network, the ECN will discover
it and add it to the inventory as a flexible block. You can verify that the
ESN204g has been added to the inventory by using the EMP CLI command
show ecn inventory. Alternatively, look in the Inventory Overview in
the EMP Web Interface. The ESN204g port number will be 1000 + its
switch ID, and it will be listed under the heading Flexible.

4. If the ECN has a later version of software than the ESN204g, the ECN will
download the software to the ESN204g. Thereafter, the ECN will upgrade
the ESN204g software, using the downloaded version. The ESN204g
Software Version can be seen in the EMP Web Interface.

5. Turn on the IP DSLAMs connected to the ESN204g. The IP DSLAMs will

now be discovered by the ECN and added to the inventory.

Installing and Upgrading the Software

9 Installing and Upgrading the Software

The application and boot SW of the embedded nodes is installed and upgraded
using the Web Interface or the CLI of the ECN. If a central management system
is used the software can be installed and upgraded in the nodes using the
management system.

The user is referred to the management system documentation (CPI) for

procedures to install and upgrade software.

If the CLI or Web Interface of the ECN is used then the user is referred to the
EMP CLI User Guide and/or EMP Web Interface User Guide for instructions.

Note: Do not downgrade the EDN612ef to a software version before EDA 4.1
R1A. Installation of earlier software will corrupt the EDN612ef flash.

The BLM1500 updates the software in the ESN204g GPON module as

required. Refer to the EDA 1500 documentation for details. No action is
required within the EDA 1200 network.
