NominalPipeSize

FromWikipedia,thefreeencyclopedia

NominalPipeSize(NPS)isaNorthAmericansetofstandardsizesforpipesusedforhighorlowpressuresandtemperatures.[1]
"Nominal"referstopipeinnonspecifictermsandidentifiesthediameteroftheholewithanondimensionalnumber(forexample

SpecificpipeisidentifiedbypipediameterandanothernondimensionalnumberforwallthicknessreferredtoastheSchedule(Sched.
orSch.,forexample"2inchdiameterpipe,Schedule40").NPSisoftenincorrectlycalledNationalPipeSize,duetoconfusionwith
nationalpipethread(NPT).TheEuropeanandinternationaldesignationequivalenttoNPSisDN(diamtrenominal/nominal
diameter/DurchmessernachNorm),inwhichsizesaremeasuredinmillimetres,seeISO6708.[2]ThetermNB(nominalbore)isalso
frequentlyusedinterchangeablywithNPS.

InMarch1927theAmericanStandardsAssociationauthorizedacommitteetostandardizethedimensionsofwroughtsteeland

Stainlesssteelpipes,whichwerecomingintomorecommonuseinthemid20thcentury,permittedtheuseofthinnerpipewallswith
