This Assignment will carry 10 Marks in the overall Marks of Energy Systems Module.

Objectives : Understand the economical factors and environmental factor related with wind
technology and wind fam.

Assignment

1. Renewable energy is clean, affordable, indigenous, and effectively inexhaustible in

nature. It produces no emissions and results in cleaner air and water for all. Do you
agree with above statement regarding the wind power plant. Consider the Sri Lanka
scenario and using the Pawandanavi data, critically justify your answer. In the answer
you must support with calculated figures to justify. Students are required to present the
cost associate with wind plants in Sri Lanka, Calculate CO2 saving by wind a 100 MW
of wind plant to justify your answer.

2. The Paris Agreement main aim is to keep the global temperature rise this century well
below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further
to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. A main outcome of Parris summit was
agreed to reducing emissions fast enough to achieve the temperature goal. To achieve
this point world leaders agreed to shut down coal power plants in coming years and
increase the use of renewable energy. In that case wind energy plays a vital role in
achieving this target. Sri Lanka is a developing country and with the end of war new
industries are coming to the Sri Lanka and there is a significant potential to develop the
country industrially. Energy is a major requirement to spur the growth of a country.
Currently Sri lanka is heavily dependent upon the coal power plants and oil fired power
plants .Sri Lanka is also agreed to the Parris COP 21 UN Climate change agreement. As
an engineering students you are required to draw a plan how wind energy can help to
achieve both goals in the coming years. Students are required to take the following
factors in their plan,
Analyze the current energy mix and trend in Sri Lanka and energy growth of Sri
Lanka.
Analyze Wind energy potential in Sri Lanka.
Use of wind energy to match the energy growth in Sri Lanka
Other technologies which can be used with wind farms
Wind has two predominant seasons South West season and North East season,
how do you overcome the seasonality of wind and the irregularity of wind in the
power system.
3. What are the environmental economic evaluation methods that are best suited to evaluate
the costs and the benefits of wind power.
