Labor Day Parade steps aside on 9/11
N
ew York City’s on-again, off-
again Labor Day Parade is off
again this year.
The parade, generally held the
second Saturday of September,
conflicts with the ninth anniversary of the
Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Organizers decided against reschedul-
ing the parade and may opt for a Labor Day
Mass.
Here’s the official statement from Jack
Ahern, president of the New York City
Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO:
“In respect and remembrance of the
men and women who gave their lives and
those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001,
the leaders and members of the city’s orga-
nized labor movement will participate in
the public and private memorials held in
their honor.”
Ahern said the parade will return next
year.
The big question has always been, will
anybody come out to watch?
The crowds for the parade have thinned
over the years, mirroring organized labor’s
declining impact in the private sector.
Last year, organizers used the parade as
a rallying point for national health care
reform.
But in 2007, the parade was dropped in
favor of a rally at the World Trade Center
site championing workers’ rights. The pa-
rade did step off in 2008.

er year, it becomes sort of like leap year,”
said Richard Steier, editor of The Chief-
Leader, a weekly newspaper that focuses
on Civil Service issues. “If this is supposed
to be relevant, why are you doing it every
other year? Is there an issue to rally around
to use the parade as an occasion to get that
message out?”
Much of the recent public debate around
unions and organized labor has focused on
anger about their health and pension bene-
fits.
My colleague, Daily News City Hall Bu-
reau Chief Adam Lisberg, weighed in on
this last Sunday when he pointed out that
organized labor seems to be losing the pub-
licity war waged by the Bloomberg admin-
istration and a host of groups backed by fi-
nancial, real estate and other business in-
terests.
There’s more than a little irony in the fact
that Civil Service jobs, once snubbed by the
Wall Street types, are now the object of en-
vy.
