System Monitor
Lab exercise:
System Monitor

Situation:

The specific goal of this exercise is to use System Monitor to analyze events in IP
Office and set filter for writing to a log file. Analyze a SIP call to remote system.

By the end of this lab, you will be able to use the System Monitor application for
diagnostic in IP Office.

Note:

All screenshots of system settings, names and IP addresses are taken from a
development system and will not reflect the values you will enter in your lab
system.

Use System Monitor to analyze events in IP Office and set filter for
writing to a log file. Analyze a SIP call to remote system.

Note:
This exercise can be done after finalizing the SIP trunk configuration exercise.

Step 1:
Double-click on the Desktop icon to Launch the Monitor Application,

or start Monitor from:


Start -> All Programs ->IP Office -> Monitor

Step 2:
The first time after installation Monitor starts with the default IP Address settings.

Monitor stores the last good connection and tries to connect with the last IP Address settings.

Step 3:
In menu bar click on File and go to Select Unit

Step 4:
Change the IP Address to connect to your Lab System.
Refer to the Lab Guide!

Step 5:
Monitor is connecting to your Lab system and displays system information.

Step 6:
Select Filters in the menu bar and go to Trace Options.. to set Filters.

Step 7:
Select tab SIP in the All Settings screen.

Step 8:
In SIP tab select all checkboxes in the red frame.

Step 9:
Click OK

Step 10:
Clear your Monitor Display:
- click on Edit in menu bar and select Clear
Display

or use the icon.

Step 11:
- Make a call from your SIP Phone to SIP Line (remote system).
- Answer the call and end call.
- Now when you have all events from this call freeze your Monitor Display.
- In menu bar click on View and select Freeze Screen Logging.

or click on this pause icon.

Step 12:
Scrolling up and down you can analyze events of this call.

Step 13:
In addition to Online analyzing, Monitor can also write events to a log file.
Go to File and select Log Preferences

Click ok if you get a warning that zip is disabled after select Log Preferences.

Step 14:
In the Select Logging Information
screen, select the radio button

Periodic,

enter a log filename

and click OK

Step 15:
In Select Logging Information
Click on ellipsis button to select the destination path for the log file.
Click OK.

Step 16:
In the Select Logging File window, Click on and select folder Configuration.
Then click Open

Step 17:
Still in Select Logging Information mark the checkbox Log to File (Ctrl+W)
and click OK.

Step 18:
Writing data to log file starts immediately and you will find a similar warning in Monitor display.

Step 19:
Make again a call with your SIP phone and then stop logging.
Press icon to stop logging.

Following warning is displayed:

Step 20:
Open the log file and analyze output.
Click on File in menu bar and select Open File.

Step 21:
In the window Open select the path where log file is stored.
Click on and select folder Configuration.

Step 22:
In the window Open select your log file and click Open.

Step 23:
Monitor is loading the selected log file; this will take a few seconds depending on size of log file.
