Mixing & Application Instructions

! HBE-HT must be applied to clean dry surface only.
! Ambient conditions for successful application include: relative humidity less than 85%; and temperature greater than 3C (5F) above the dew point.
! The acceptable substrate temperature range for application is 10C (50F) to 100C (212F). Applying onto warm substrate greater than 38C (100F) enhances coating adhesion.
! Formulated to mixing ratio of 3 parts Base to one part Cure by volume.
Application Instructions

! If additional coats are required, they shall be applied while the preceding coat is still tacky (no tie coat needed). The maximum over-coating interval shall not exceed two (2) hours at
25C (77F) without roughening the surface. If recoating interval has been exceeded, surface must be blast roughened prior to application of topcoat.
! A minimum of four (4) hours curing above 20C (68F) is required prior to handling. Handling time may be longer at lower temperatures. Backfill only after Shore D hardness
reaches 70.
Brush Grade:
! Apply thoroughly mixed epoxy by brush, roller or trowel. When coating pipe, remove application tools on the upstroke to prevent pulling material down and off the pipe bottom.
! Refer to HBE-HT Brush Grade Installation Guide for detailed information.
Spray Grade:
! HBE-HT Spray Grade shall be applied to the specified Dry Film Thickness (DFT) in a single application using a 3:1 mix-ratio Graco Hydra-Cat two-component spray equipment or
approved equal.
! Pot-life of mixed components in spray hose is less than 1 minute.
! Detailed application instructions and technical support are available from Canusa.

3. Recommended HBE-HT Application Guidelines

3.1 Material Storage and Safety
To ensure maximum performance, store Canusa products in a dry, ventilated area.
Keep products sealed in original cartons and avoid exposure to direct sunlight, rain,
snow, dust or other adverse environmental elements. Avoid prolonged storage at
temperatures above 35C or below 5C Product installation should be done in
accordance with local health and safety regulations.

Product installation should be done in well-ventilated area and in accordance with local
health and safety regulations. Read the MSDS prior to using the products.

3.3 Recommended HBE-HT Application Guidelines

Step 1: Record Ambient Temperature Conditions
As a minimum, at the start of each days coating and every four hours thereafter and
during the final 30 minutes of each days coating, the following parameters shall be
measured and recorded:

Dew point temperature

Ambient temperature
Relative humidity
Pipe temperature (randomly, at a minimum of 6 places around circumference)

Note: Pre-heat Temperature (if required) and Pipe Substrate Temperature shall be
measured with a fully calibrated digital thermometer with a thermocouple probe.

Step 2: Surface Preparation

Clean exposed steel and adjacent pipe coating with a solvent cleanser that will not
leave an oil residue (ie. ethanol, MEK, etc.) to remove the presence of oil, grease, and
other contaminants.

Ensure that the pipe is at least 3C above the dew point before cleaning. Thoroughly
clean the cutback area to near white metal SIS Sa 2 (SSPC-SP10) or equivalent
with a surface profile of 60 to 120 microns. Sweep blast/abrade with Emory Paper 75
mm (3") of the line coating on each side of cutback area.

Wipe clean or air blast the steel and coated areas to remove foreign materials. The pipe
surface must be clean and dry prior to application of HBE-HT epoxy.

If the pipe temperature is <3C above the dew point, the field joint may be pre-heated
with propane torch prior to blasting to remove any moisture.

Step 3: Initial Joint Pre-Heat

Using an induction coil or propane torch, pre-heat the cutback and adjacent mainline
coating to temperature of between 40C to 70C prior to the application of the liquid
HBE-HT coating. If using propane torch, one may have to pre-heat before blasting to
avoid flash rusting of the surface.

Step 4: Mixing HBE-HT Liquid Epoxy

Components must be warmed to at least 20C (68F) prior to mixing. Pour Part A- HBE-
HT Cure (small container) into Part B- HBE-HT Base (large container). Scrape walls
and lids of both containers to ensure all product is used. When mixing, slow the mixer
down at the surface of the liquid to prevent the introduction of air into the coating. Do
not add solvent or other materials to the mixture.

Begin mixing slowly. After initial mix has been achieved, a spatula or mixing stick should
be used to remove any resin from the side of container. Mix at such a speed that
ensures a uniform mix, but does not create a vortex in the liquid. At temperatures
HBE-HT PRODUCT APPLICATION PROCEDURE, ITP & PQT Page 6 of 9

between 20C (68F) and 40C (105F), mix for one (1) minute with a drill stirrer or four
(4) minutes with a spatula, blending both parts to create one uniform colour with no
streaks.

Step 5: HBE-HT Epoxy Application

Dispense epoxy across the steel cutback and spread around the circumference of the
pipe using the HD foam rollers to the specified minimum thickness of 700 to 1000
microns on all exposed metal. Cover at least 50 mm of any adjacent pipeline coating.
Coating should only be applied at temperatures above 10C (50F), when the ambient
temperature is 3C (5F) above the dew point, and when the relative humidity is below
85%.

3.4 Repair Procedure for HBE-HT Liquid Epoxy and FBE Mainline
3.4.1 Minor Repair
Canusa-CPS high build epoxy is available in a 400ml 2-component repair cartridge.
The cartridge fits into a universal 2-component cartridge dispenser.

Lightly abrade the damaged area with clean abrasive grit/sand paper, approximately 15
mm (0.5) around the repair area. Wipe clean with a lint-free cloth or air blast the steel
and pipe coating to remove foreign contaminants. Surface must be clean and dry prior
to application of HBE repair product.

To dispense, unscrew the cap, remove the two small plugs in the each side of the
cartridge and replace cap. Squeeze the trigger of the cartridge dispenser and dispense
a desired amount of material into a mixing cup. The cartridge dispenser will
automatically dispense the correct ratio of base and cure.

With a clean stir stick mix thoroughly for at least 1 minute. Use clean trowel, stir stick or
other application tool to apply HBE to repair area plus abraded perimeter to specified
minimum thickness.

To accelerate curing the damaged area pipe may be heated with a propane torch up to
85 to 95C prior to surface preparation and may be gently forced-cured with a propane
torch or hot air tool.

3.4.2 Major Repair

For major repairs (greater than 50 cm2), the damaged area shall be grit blasted to
remove the defect. Apply HBE-HT in accordance with section 3.3.
