3.1. LANDING WITH RETRACTED LANDING-GEAR

When the landing gear cannot be extended 1 the pilot can land
in good conditmons, because the unretracted wheel provides the
distance necessary to taxiing on the ground.

As in retracted position the shock-absorber is out of

operation, the pilot shall try to land on a good ground and having
a speed as low as possible. It is recommended:
- to land with the :t'lap at setting + 3 (deflection 15);
- approach speed: 85 km/h; 46 kts; 53 mph;
- recovery: as low as possible;
- contact speed: approx. 65 km/h; 95kte; 40 mph;
I

The lowest contact speed is perf'ormed with retracted air

\ brake.

3.2. SPIN RECOVERY

As a result of piloting faults (errors) the glider can staJ.-t

the spino In this case the pilot shall apply the ;.rudqer. opposite
to the direction at' rotation and shall bring the control column in
mid-position and slightly towards diving.

When spin stops the pilot shall recover the glider by

slightly pulling the control
. column
\
The height loss for a spin turn is or approx. 80-90 m;
262-295 ft. The speed at spin recovery is of approxo 150-160 km/h;
81-86 kts; 93-99 mph.
. .....
3. 3. EMERGENCY EVACUATIJaN '{)F GLIDER
In case ot' emergency when the pilot must leave the glider
during the flight, the canopy is~jettisoned as follows:
- Simultaneously push forward tpe cockpit opening handle,
located to the left and the cockpit jettison handle (red colourb
symmetrically located to the right.
- Push the cowl up so that it can be taken away by the
current. The lug of' the cable limiting the cockpit opening yields
and the cockpit is detached.

F:UIGH'l' AND MAIN'l'ENANCE lVIANUi1.L IS-28B2

If for certain reasons the:aero-towing speed lowers below

100 km/h, 54 kts, 62 mph, especially on the climbing slope,
extend the flap at +l setting (deflection +5).

The release handle shall be actuated up to its travel end

and the pilot shall fly in the same direction as the aeroplane
and shall not start the evolutions if he has not checked the
aero-towing cable detachment.

4.3.2.4. li'ree flight

The IS-2882 has a good manoeuvrability, even at low speeds,
near the stalling speed.

The stall warning starts by vibrations approx. 2 km/h;

1 kt, 1.2 mph before reaching the stalling speed. No
uncontrollable tendencies occur at straight stall. The stall is
not dangerous, even in banked turns, the pilot regaining the
control by slightly releasing the control column.

The maximum gliding ratio is reached at an airspeed of

94 km/h, 51 kts, 59 ~~~f. in simple control and at 100 km/h,
54 kts, 62 mph indoube-control. The minimum sinking speed is
reached at 80 km/h, 43 kts, 49.5 mph in simple control and at
85 km/h, 46 kts, 53 mph, in dual control.
"
To get some s1\aller spirsl flying radii, use the flaps
at the following settings: +l (deflection +5), +2 (deflection
+10).

In rapid flights, between ascensions~the

flap negative
position can be successf'ully used at sp,eeds exceeding 160 km/h,
86 kts, 99 mph. ""'~ ' ,, .
The glider speeds polar is shown in chapter 5 (fig.5-2).

4.).2.5. Before: landing

Bei'ore the last turn, 1or starting the approach slope,

extend the landing gear and properly lock it.

For landing gear extensions press the handle forwards and

press the button in order to ease the unlocking. Pull the handle
until the latch sound in close position is heard. Check the
locking by moving slightly the handle forwards and backwards.

The landing can be performed even without landing gear

extension.

After the glider setting on landing direction, extend

the i'lap at +3 (deflection +15)o
The optimum approach speed with air brake completely
extended is of 100 km/h, 54 kts, 62 mph.
The minimum speed for flying on the approach slope is of
85 km/h, 46 kts, 53 mph.
The approach procedure consists in setting the tri~ tab
in order to have a proper stress on control column and in
adjusting the approach slope by easily and -gradually handling
the air brakes.

4 '.). 2 6. Landing

'
At a height of approx. 5 m (16 ft) carry out the approach
slope allevation and at approx. 0.5 m (1.6 ft) from the ground
carry out the recovery. In these conditions, the touch down speed
may lowers to approx. 65 km/h, 35 kts, ~O mph
..,.A.,'

Extend the air brake completely during taxiing,, For

shortening the taxiing actuate the wheel brake, by pulling
'-.
the air brake handle.

The towing cable, provided with TOST lug, or equivalent
one, shall be connected to the rear release, used only for winch
towing. The worker who executes the connection shall check the
correct connection by pulling on cable.

The pilot shall set the trim tab in mid position, approx.
at "0 (zero).
11

Extend the flap at +2 (deflection +10) for a rapid

take-off.

When taxiing starts, maintain the fuselage horizontal

position by pushing the control column slightly. After take-off
(65-70 km/h; 35-')8 kts; 40-4303 mph) maintain the glider in the
same horizontal position until the speed increases to 80-85 km/h;
43-46 kts; 49.5-53 mph, then bring the control column towards mid
position to obtain .9 stressed climbing slope. Th~ optimum climbing
speed is of 100 km/h, 54 kts, 62 mph.

When an angle of approx. 75against the winch is reached.,,

the release is performed automatically.

The controlled release in any moment of lunch is performed

by pulling the release control (yellow handle) up to its travel

From all the methods recommended by the piloting

technique, the dropping of the wing from the win.1 direction,
provides the best control.

The limit :UP to which take-off and landing can be performed,

even at speeds exceedtng
... 11 kts, depends especially on the
pilot's ability. ~

4.4.2. FplWi'f lN CLOUDS

v'
The glider is accepted for flight in clouds, if it meets
the national requirements and it is equipped with the following
instruments:
- Airspeed Indicate~ '
Turnd and Bank Indicator~
- Altimeter
- Compass
- Variometer

Avoid the icing, exeessive cloudiness and hail areasdur~-.-6

flight in clouds.

If the control is lost or if the Airspeed Indicator or the

Turn and Bank Indicator are damaged during flight in clouds, the
pilot shall leave the cloud as soon as possible. In such
situations al~ controls shall be brought in mid position, the
control column shall be slightly downwards and the air brakes
completely extended. This manoeuvre shall bring the glidar to
an approximately straight descent flight, without speed excess
and eases the cloud leaving within safety limits.

4.4.3. ~~ROBATIC MANEUVERING

For aerobatic maneuvering flight check all the items

fastening, especially the cushion and belts from the
back seat , if this is not occupied.

Before performing the aerobatic maneuvering, the pilot shaJ.l

~djust his belts.

FLIGHT A~D MAINTENANCE MANUAL IS-2882

The glider shall be trimmed at 100 km/h; 54 kts; 62 mph.

The glider carries out controlled and controllable spin,

as follows :
- Reduce the spe~ed gradually, with flap at "O" (zero) and
without moving up th; nose too much above the horizon.
- At app't.mt. 72 km/h, 39 kts, 45 mph actuate the rudder
.~
up to its tr~~el end, on the spin side.
- When rotation and wing and nose stall occur, pull the
control column firmly up to the limiter, extending at the same
time the aileron, by removing the control column on rotation
side. Maintaining the controls\in this position, the glider
performs a stabilized spin. The positin and speed indicated
during rotation depend on balance. At aft balance, the nose
is up and the speed is lower. At fore balance, approx. 35 % CMA
after 3-4 turns, the glider accelerates and recovers itself froi
the spin.
- For recovery from spin apply the rudder opposite to the
direction of rotation, bring the control column in mid position
and slightly towards diving. The rotation stops, the glider
performs a diving flight and pulls out easily. The lag in spin
stop control is less than 1/2 turn and depends on balance and
number of performed turns.

The speed during pull-out of dive is approx. 160-170 km/h,

86-92 kts, 99-106 mph.

The glider does not perform controlled spin with crossed

controls.

4.4.3.2. Looping
The optimum speed for performing the looping is of
minimum 170 km/h, 92 kts, 106 mph.

3rd ISSUE - APRIL 1978 Page 4.10

FLIGHT AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL IS-28B2

Gradually pull the control column, avoid.ing the maximum

deflection.

In inverted position the speed is minimum and the control

column slow releasing provides the loop rounding on its upper
side. The speed at th~ end of recovery depends on the way the
pilot has performed the loop lower side and exceeds by approx~
10-15 km/h, 5.'5~8 kts, 6-9 mph the recommended starting speed.
t VI"
v'"

4.4.3.3. Diving turn

The recommended starting speed for diving turn is of

170 km/h, 92 kts, 106 mph.
~

Start the rotation by actuating the rudder at the indicated

speed of approx. 130 km/h, 70 kts, 81 mph.

After wings rotation in vertical plane by approx. 45

actuate the control column sidewise, opposite to .the dire ct ion
of.rotation. The resulting negative moment shall ease the
rotation and shall prevent the inverted flight due to the upper
wing additional lift.

When rotation is.nearly finished (180) and the nose drops

down, bring all controls in mid position.

The glider recovers easily from the resulting dive.

The maximum speed during recovery depends on the pilot's

skill and is generally equal to the starting speed.

4.4.3.4~ Overturnillii

The recommended starting speed is of approx. 150-160 km/h,

81-86 kts, 93-99 mph.

The climbing slope and the rotation speed in the wing ovr
shall be conducted so that the inverted flight speed should b6
of approx. 90 km/h, 48.5 kts, 56 mpho Higher inverted flight
speeds can lead to excess speeds~when finishing the ~alf 0~~r
tur:Q.ing loop.

601. CLEANING

Keeping the gli~er clean is important for its general

condition. Cleaning -,~lessens the p,os.sibili ty of corrosion and
makes inspec~io~ and maintenance easier.-
.....\ '"

6ololo CANOPY
The canopy shall be cleaned of dust 'with plenty of fresh,
water, using a soft cloth 1 a sponge or a chamois. Then dry with
a clean moist chamois.
~

Do not rub with a dry cloth since the dust may scratch the
plastic surfaceo

Oil and grease shall be removed by washing with water and

a mild soap or detergent. After washing, rinse with clean.1 r
and dry as mentioned above.

The mat areas can be polished with "Plexipol" water, using

a soft cloth or cotton - wool.

CAUTION t

Do not use organic sol-

vents or oil-bearing
products, since they will
soften and craze: the
plastic.

6.1.2. EAINTED SURFACES

polishing the painted surfaces

6.1.3. COCKPIT_INTERIOR
To clean the interior proceed as follows :
' . '
- Brush......pr..,.vacuum clean the upholstery to remove the
dust and dirt.
- Oil spots and stains may be cleaned with house-hold spot
removers, used sparingly. Never saturate the fabric with volatil
solvent; it may damage the padding and backing materialo
- Scrape sticky material f~om fabric with a dull knife,
~

then spot clean the areao

6.1.4o WHEELS
Wheels shall be washed periodically and examined for
corrosion and cracks or dents in the wheel castings. Sand smooth
prime, and repaint or repair minor defects.

6.2. GLIDER MOUNTING-DISMOUNTING

6.2.1. GLIDER MOUNTING

Before mounting clean the junction fittings of miscallaneou;
assembling elements and, if need be, grease them with a thin
coat of neutral solid vaseline.

6.2.1.1. Wing mounting

The fuselage-wing junction consists of four cylindrical

guiding bolts located on fuselage and of two central, tapered,
undismountable bolts, located on the right wing (see fig.6-1)
which are actuated simultaneously by a special wrench.

Service Bullet
FLITE-LITE, INC. ft pf-'A pl\5t-"- Servicing repo
forms
De a r Larlc Owners C.rJitlP.15
~ We at Flite-Lite are overjoyed to bring you great news for
~1998. As you read ER-24 Service Bulletin and discover the
~iife extension has been granted by the Romanian CAA, and recog-
nized by our FAA, you will share our joy. This is the fruit of
a lot of frustration with the Romanian CAA, and giant effort by
us and help from the SAA,ie Jim Short, FAA ie Mike Kiesov and Joe
Gonsalzes. As many of you lcnow this SB was applied for by IAR in
June 1996.(been communist to long) The extension applies to all
certified LARKS, IS-28B2, IS-29D2, and IS-28M2/GR. In this packet
you will find three SERVICING REPORT forms. Malce yourselves some
copies so you wouldn't run out over the years. To keep your gliders
20 year extension it is MANDATORY that one of these forms be filled
out yearly at the time of annual inspection and mailed/faxed to
Flite-Lite. I will in turn forward them to Romania. I can not
stress enough the importance of your diligence to insure that this
is done 1 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Other LARK good news, the IS-28M2/GR was certified by the Romanian
CAA 11 Nov 1997. Our FAA has been there discussing the bi-lateral
extension and FAA part 23 certification of the M2. It amounts to
paperworlc, IAR to Romanian CAA, then on to American FAA. We hope
this will get accomplished quiclcly. The M2 is available pending
certification. We will take orders with a minimum deposit to insure
a delivery date and will be fully refundable should anything not
go through with our FAA. They have German orders to last through the
spring, so probably the earliest delivery will be summer 1998.
Would still lilce to get three sold to be delivered with Flite-Lites
demo plane and do a around the lower 48 tour. Give that some though.
The one time good deal offered by IAR for the M2/GR is $73,000. at
Columbia,SC. Your N number, custom paint, C of A, standard T/C,
ready to fly away. IAR was very plane in telling me,"the price
wi'11 increase."

We are at the moment,1 Jan !998, putting together a shipment

for Mar/Apr 1998. There is still one each IS-28B2 and IS-29D2
coming in that shipment of three that are unsold and loolcing for
a pilot/owner. B2 is $35,500. and D2 $30,000. at Columbia,sc.
Get your order in for the 98 season and before IAR increases the
price.

FLITE-LITE is slowly building up a parts inventory. IAR has

promised to stoclc, with us, more parts to the tune of $10,000.worth.
We're in the process of acquire an airport near Coulmbia and
researching a repair station certificate, so with the parts here
and doing repair work we can be of better service.

We keep traclc of IAR products in North and South America. If

you sell your plane, please let us know about this transaction.
We've got a bulletin board, so if you want to sell or buy, that
might match you to a customer.
The word"overhaul'' in the manual means the work done at lOOOhrs
as called for in 6.4.1 of the enclosed revision. Have you had PIC-
PACIFIC overhaul your TOST releases???? Shock absorber seal kits
are available for $48.00.

The present Service Bulletin is applied to the IS-2BB2 gliders i{

good technical condition with all the maintenance works correctly
performed and with. the service life notyet consumed, but with the
20 years safe life expiredo

l.Bo Reason
The possibility of gliders servicing after the expiration of the
20 years safe life from the manufacturing date.

l.Co Description
a) The service life of the glider remains unchanged : 10,000 flight
hours or 30,000 landings, whichever occurs firsto
b) The safe life of the glider is no more limited to 20 yearso The
glider is kept under servicing depending on its technical con-
dition.
The technical condition is examined during the special inspec-
tion (of the 6 years-type) which shall be carried .out yearl~
by the owner after the glider has reached 20 years from the
manufacturing date or beginning with the 6th year after overhaul
if this overhaul was carried out within the period of 16 to 20
years from the manufacturing dateo
The inspection of the technical condition is completed by the
soundness check which is carried out by an authori~ed person/
workshop.
c) When a safe life of 20 years from the manufacturing date has bee
reached, the following procedure may be applied, depending on thi
glider condition :

l 0 C0 l 0 An overhaul is performed and the glider will be normally

operated for 6 years, during which only the normal mainte-
nance works bill be carried out.
After 6 years from overhaul, the glider will be subjected tdi
the recommended maintenance schedule for the gliders havir . . .
exceeded 20 years from the manufacturing dote.

accordance with the indications of the FAA....t\Co4J-4A/25.07 0
1991 Advisory Circular. During these checks the form enclosed
to the present bulletin shall be filled in. The form filled
in and signed (by the authorized person/workshop) will be
sent to the manufacturer (IAH.-BrofiOV) for information and
approval.
We recommend that the own.er of the glider send to IAR also a
short history of the glider together with the filled in formo
Thisbistory will include the following information :
- tot-al number of flight hours, special events, special
damages and, possibly, the remedies applied, therepairs
and revisions to which the glider was subjected 0
- date of the last flight.
- customer's remarks.

If the glider condition, examined by the authorized person/

workshop, is.adequate, the glider will be able to be serviced
for another 3 years, with the IAR-BraGOV approvalo The 6
years-type inspection shall be carried out yearly by the u~er.

After the extension of 3 years, if the glider condition is

good, a new soundness check shall be performed, filling in
the form and after receiving the approval, the Blider will
be able to be operated for .. J .yeors.more.

Tho maximum possible safe life is of 29 years without

performing an overhaul.

year
R2 = revision after 500 25 flight hours or four operation
years
RG = overhaul after 1,000 flight hours or eight operation
years - 40,000 landings.
The gliders with the service life (l,000 flight hours) not
36 consumed until the first overhaul, but having not reached more than
8 years from the manufacturing date can be the subject for extendine
the normal service life (8 years) by m.13ximum 4 years, depending on .
its proper technical condition.
The technical condition is checked during the R2 revision (500
flight hours) which shall be carried out every year ofter the 8th
se~vicing year, completed by the list of additional works to be per
formed during the 6 years-revision
....~
The service life extension will be decided upon the revision
perf orrnance o .rhe service life until the overhaul sha 11 not be
1

extended over the 12 years limit. -~

When reaching 20 years from the manufacturing date, the gl~

having not consumed their service life can be maintained under ser-
vicing providing that the "Recommended maintenance schedule for th(3
gliders continuing to be serviced after reachin~ 20 years from the
manufacturing date" is observedo (Appendix 2/0ctober 1997).
There are two possibilities of solving this problem, depending
on the glider technical condition:.
a) an overhaul is carried out
b) the glide:rs are operated according to their technical
conditiono

J6 The schedule is based upon the yearly performance of the 6 year:

-revision and upon carrying out the structure soundness inspection
after 3 years (check of the corrosion condition to the IS-28B2
gliders - Appendix l/October 1997)0

20 years from tbe manufacturing date, the safe life can be extendE
22.
to maxo 35 years for the gliders with the overhaul performed at 2C
y.:ears, or to maxo 29 years for the gliders with on overhaul perfoI
before reaching 20 years.

The only assemblies of the glider with limited service life

are tbe releases. According to TOST indications, the releases are
dismounted and sent for revision after 2,000 startings'or 3 ope-
.ration years.

The boards instruments manufactured by PZL have no 'service

life limit indicated.
