Herff,authorofareviewrecentlypublishedinthejournalFrontiersinHumanNeuroscience.
Whilereadingone'sthoughtsmightstillbelongtotherealmsofsciencefiction,scientistsarealreadydecodingspeechfromsignalsgeneratedinour
brainswhenwespeakorlistentospeech.
Intheirreview,Herffandcoauthor,Dr.TanjaSchultz,comparetheprosandconsofusingvariousbrainimagingtechniquestocaptureneuralsignals
fromthebrainandthendecodethemtotext.
ThetechnologiesincludefunctionalMRIandnearinfraredimagingthatcandetectneuralsignalsbasedonmetabolicactivityofneurons,tomethods
suchasEEGandmagnetoencephalography(MEG)thatcandetectelectromagneticactivityofneuronsrespondingtospeech.Onemethodinparticular,
calledelectrocorticographyorECoG,showedpromiseinHerff'sstudy.
ThisstudypresentstheBraintotextsysteminwhichepilepsypatientswhoalreadyhadelectrodegridsimplantedfortreatmentoftheircondition
participated.Theyreadouttextspresentedonascreeninfrontofthemwhiletheirbrainactivitywasrecorded.Thisformedthebasisofadatabaseof
patternsofneuralsignalsthatcouldnowbematchedtospeechelementsor"phones."
Whentheresearchersalsoincludedlanguageanddictionarymodelsintheiralgorithms,theywereabletodecodeneuralsignalstotextwithahigh
degreeofaccuracy."Forthefirsttime,wecouldshowthatbrainactivitycanbedecodedspecificallyenoughtouseASRtechnologyonbrainsignals,"
