SOLID WASTE MANGEMENT: A UNIVERSITY SOCIAL CONCERN ON ATTITUDE, PERCEPTION

AND WILLINGNESS

Today the most important subject that affects and worries mankind is the issues
concerned with waste management. Waste management practices like the municipal solid
waste can differ for developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas, and for
residential, commercial, government institutions and industrial producers. Recently, the City
Government of Cagayan de Oro has recently imposed a strict compliance to the RA 9003 or
commonly known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. According to the
implementing rules and regulations of the said act a Material Recovery Facilities is need for
proper waste characterization. Its is also emphasized that only residual waste will be
collected by the Solid Waste Management Board from the location to the sanitary landfill.

The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, one of the leading
providers of S&T education in the country hosts a large number of people, from students,
faculties and service providers. The researchers believed that it is a big challenge for an S&T
University to create an effective solid waste management plan for the institution in order to
keep up with the implementation of the RA 9003. Community participation has a direct
bearing on efficient Solid Waste Management. The researchers are mainly concern on the
social aspect of the implementation. The researchers would like to know the attitude,
perception and willingness of the people in the university regarding the implementation of
the solid waste management.

The research will help in determining the social factors that may affect the
implementation of the RA 9003. The study can also be beneficial to the University
administration in the identification of the problems such as IEC effectives and familiarization
of implementing rules and regulation.
