The unconscious mind is often represented as an iceberg.

Everything above the water represents

conscious awareness while everything below the water represents the unconscious. The things that
represent our conscious awareness are simply "the tip of the iceberg." The rest of the information that is
outside of conscious awareness lies below the surface. While this information might not be accessible
consciously, it still exerts an influence over current behavior.

The Id is the first portion of the personality to develop.

The Id is focused on the wants and needs of a person.

The Id does not care about consequences, and aims at achieving pleasure and avoiding pain.

The Id is not rational, and does not care how its wants are obtained.

The Id is present from birth, where babies only care about their needs being met.

In our metaphor the small amount of iceberg above the surface represents the
conscious mind; the huge mass below the surface, the unconscious mind. The
unconscious mind holds all awareness that is not presently in the conscious mind. All
memories, feelings and thoughts that are out of conscious awareness are by definition
'unconscious.' It is also called the subconscious and is known as the dreaming mind or
deep mind.
the unconscious is split between the id (instincts) and the superego (conscience), which
are in constant battle with one another.
