on every day to create hit tracks. VoiceTone Create XT improves on
the original Create by incorporating HardTune (used by artists such

LIFT Worship helps churches with all aspects of Worship Ministry

Family Tradition
By Steven Douglas Losey

The pedal steel is wailing, singing, and praising to an old

traditional hymn as all ten strings are purposefully strummed.
While the congregation dances, claps, and stomps, Robert
Randolph connects with his Maker.

It’s been called enlightenment, ushering in the Holy Spirit, and

divine anointing, and he and the Family Band have it. Gifted to
lead, and musical virtuosos as well, the band plays funk, gospel,
rock, jazz, pop, R&B, and soul divinely; they whip out styles and
grooves faster then you can say “Amen!” Whether it’s leading
a congregation or gigging with Eric Clapton, the band strives to
bring a message of hope to the masses.

Robert Randolph is blessed and he knows it, learning early on

at the House of God Church in New Jersey that music is a gift
from God. He ran with it. He discovered secular music like Earth,
Wind and Fire, Muddy Waters, and the Allman Brothers; then his
ears were opened to hearing Stevie Ray Vaughn, which changed
his life.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band are just that: his cousin
Danyel Morgan plays bass; his cousin Marcus Randolph plays
drums, and his sister Lenesha Randolph serves up vocals. The
family tree is deep, and they are rooted in the finest gospel, funk
and R&B traditions.

I’m afraid I’m going to have to officially climb up on my soapbox
now. So… my plea is that every Christian musician would stop the
merry-go-round for a few minutes and actually think about a new defi-
nition of church music. I’d like to see music at church become wildly
varied and colorful and expressive and even, dare I say, unexpected!
Surprising! Imagine worship being exciting - music that people of all
ages and musical persuasions can’t wait until next Sunday to resume.
How could this be accomplished? Consider what you could do. Exam-
ine the music you like (even outside of worship). What makes it good?
Specifically, what is it about good music that compels you? How could
these elements be brought to the sanctuary and used to compel to the
rest of the congregation in worship? Search this out, glean the good
stuff you find and bring it to the altar with you. Talk to others. Ask
questions. Examine your talents and the talents of those around you.
Decide to really utilize your talents for the Lord, and then go for it. Pull
yourself up by your bootstraps. Learn. Open your mind and spread out
musically. Practice your instrument. Get creative. Be a visionary. Devise
a plan. Lead others by example. Be a spark for change and fan the
flame at your church. Make a difference. Start your own worship music
revolution!
