ABSTRACT
This study is an analysis of the women characters in the short fiction of Nick Joaquin. It proceeds from the
proposition that the women characters, though they appear emancipated or empowered, are actually dominated by the
patriarchal order. In relation to this, the women characters are subjected to a feminist critique. Using a feminist framework,
this study submits these women characters to a close analysis, in an attempt to show how they are ultimately defined by
patriarchal assumptions.
This study focuses on twenty-two women characters from the fourteen stories of Joaquin which have been
anthologized in Prose and Poems and Tropical Gothic. These women characters are classified into two groups the defiant
and the dominated. The former includes the characters who initially appear to subvert patriarchy, while the latter are the
The study shows that all of these characters are dominated by the patriarchal order and that Joaquin, in spite of
appearing to advocate matriarchy through his stories, actually sustains the viewpoints of patriarchy.
