during all of the planned train track repairs.
It is important for you to know that the
same taxpayer-funded MTA that celebrated the
New Years Day Grand Opening of the Second
Avenue Subway (a boondoggle subway line that
has been underway for decades) is now respon-
sible for this new mess they will create at Penn
Station.
You should know that I join the ranks of
many who applaud the selection of Joe Lhotas
return to the MTA to serve as its Chair during
this crisis. Joe Lhota is an expert, his leadership
is unparalleled, and he is only accepting an an-
nual salary as MTA Chair of $1.
Every MTA Board Member should be an
expert in the field, so they can guide and ratify
important decisions that impact the lives of the
commuters who ride our trains to get to work
so they can pay their bills and raise their fami-
lies.

Board Members who comprise the MTA, how
many of them are experts and how many of
them are just lackeys or political appointees?
I will give you a clue: All Board members
are appointed by the Governor, some on the rec-
ommendation of City and County officials in
the MTA service region.
My dear reader, MTA Board Members need to
know more than how to ride a train.
We need experts who know how to fix this
mess, how to run the trains, how to prioritize
the repairs, and how to do triage for this sick
patient, our public transit system.
Joe Lhota needs experts, not political
hacks, to get through the expected hell in 8
weeks with everything going in and out of Penn
Station and to determine how to prevent the
next train derailment?
Joe Lhota needs experts, not hangers-on,
to figure a way to update the hodgepodge of our
subways signal system that is clearly inade-
quate and is responsible for the breakdown of
the flow of subway traffic.

BROOKLYN:
12-year-old Brooklyn student was ar-
rested Tuesday after allegedly bringing
a gun to school.
It happened Tuesday afternoon at JHS
50 in Williamsburg. Police say a school of-
ficer found the boy with an unloaded 9mm
gun.
He was arrested without incident. Res-
idents NY1 spoke with say they're sur-
prised. "Back in the day, that would maybe
be a common story. But now, that that's hap-
pening, it does surprise me. Especially be-
cause this school has taken strides to create
more initiatives to improve on more fronts,"
said one resident. "It's shocking because you
don't expect that from little kids, so it's kind
of like, what's going on? You know, like,
who's raising these kids?" said another.
The Department of Education and

Andrew Oneil Bowyer, 26, was sen-
tenced in a Louisiana court on Thursday,
after previously pleading guilty to Con-
spiracy to Commit Mail Fraud.
U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier
sentenced Bowyer to 78 months incarcer-
ation, followed by three years of super-
vised release. A hearing on restitution is
set for October 5.
According to court records, Bowyer
and others operated a scheme which
scammed elderly persons. The victims
were contacted by phone and told to send
funds in order to claim lottery winnings.

year-old victim met KHAN at the Rodeway
Inn on the Upper West Side after the defen-
dant responded to an online advertisement
for prostitution services.
Khan soon became violent, and held a
knife to the victims neck before tying her
up and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint
in a 10th floor hotel room. The defendant
then moved the victim to another room,
where he raped and again sexually assaulted
her at knifepoint.

efforts to promote citizen security and sup-

day that newly-appointed national security
advisor, retired Major General Stewart Saun-
ders, possesses the necessary competencies
to succeed.
The prime minister also noted that the
new national security advisor, who retired as
chief of defence staff in Jamaica in October
2010 after serving the Jamaica Defence
Force (JDF) with distinction for 37 years,
has more than 40 years of experience at the
operational, strategic and tactical levels and
has played a major role in legislative reform
in Jamaica.
However, left unexplained by Harris
were the findings of a commission of inquiry
set up in the aftermath of the so-called Tivoli
Gardens Massacre in Kingston in 2010,
which accused Saunders of dereliction of
duty and incompetence.
The inquiry said it would have recom-
mended that Saunders never again serve in
internal security operations had he still been
the chief of staff of the JDF.
The 2010 Kingston unrest, also known
locally as the Tivoli Incursion, was an armed
conflict between the Shower Posse drug car-
tel and Jamaica's military and police forces.

Magistrates Court on Thursday with extort-
ing $120,000 from Johnathan Ash. Dorsett
was also charged with accepting bribes in the
same amount.
He was charged with four counts of ex-
tortion, four counts of bribery and one count
of misconduct in public office. It is alleged
that Dorsett committed these crimes between
March 1 and May 9.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad:
n the face of growing political unrest in
Venezuela, a large number of Venezuelan
immigrants living in Trinidad are con-
cerned that the continued violence may
spill-over into Trinidad and result in an im-
migration crisis.
Approximately 15,000 Venezuelans
are residing there and as the social up-
heaval continues in Caracas and other
major cities, this figure is expected to grow
before the end of the year, Trinidad News-
day reported.
Meanwhile, the secretary general of
the Organization of American States
(OAS), Luis Almagro, held a telephone
conversation on Wednesday afternoon with
recently released opposition leader
Leopoldo Lpez.
During the conversation, the two
agreed on the need to continue working for
the return of democracy to Venezuela and
the recovery of the rights of the Venezuelan
people.
They also emphasized the urgent need
for the regime to cease repression, to pub-
lish a comprehensive electoral calendar,
open a humanitarian channel to meet the
needs of the people of the country, com-
pletely restore the powers of the National
Assembly and release all political prison-
ers, including a complete release for Lpez
himself.

Cayman elections
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands:
Recommendations to review election laws
and further comply with international obli-
gations have been made by the election ob-
servation mission (EOM) of six
Commonwealth observers, led by Steve
Rodan MLC, president of Tynwald (Isle of
Man) in its final report on the May 2017 gen-
eral election in the Cayman Islands.
The EOM, which was arranged by the
Commonwealth Parliamentary Association
British Isles and Mediterranean Region
(CPA BIMR), found that the elections met
the international standards for democratic,
genuine and transparent elections but offered
recommendations, notably regarding voter
and candidates eligibility criteria, con-
stituency boundaries and the participation of
women.
In light of the mobility of the Cayman
Islanders and the contribution of its expat
community, it is important in any review of
the Constitution Order to consider the re-
quirements on the duration of residence,
Rodan said.
With regard to constituency boundaries,
he commented: Constituency boundaries
should be further reviewed with the aim to
achieve greater equality between the number
of electors within each electoral districts.
The mission also highlighted the low
level of female candidates and elected mem-
bers. This falls short of the Cayman Islands
international commitments under the Con-
vention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination Against Women.

America's independence on July 4th as

The ceremonies are held traditionally
twice a month at the site. Westchester's
newest Americans are composed of repre-

Shamoya McKenzies death sent rever-
berations through the City of Mount Vernon
and surrounding cities and helped spark an
awakening in a community that wants to take
back its streets from senseless gun violence.
To that end, the Shamoya McKenzie Founda-
tion intends to partner with anti-gun violence
groups such as Everytown for Gun Safety,
Sandy Hook Promise and the Family Services
of Westchesters Project SNUG (guns
spelled backwards) in their ongoing battle to
reduce gun violence at the community, educa-
tional and legislative levels.

finish the requirements for her de-
gree in only 3 years (the average
length of completion of a Ph.D. is 5-
6 years, sometimes up to 8 or 9
years).
Samara wants to continue doing
research to help prevent chronic dis-
eases in Black communities. I love
the type of research that I do, and I
would have had it no other way, she
says. I am very passionate about
building up our Black communities
in the areas of health and education.
Blacks are the most obese in the
country (US) and, particularly in the
Southeast region of the US, they re-
ceive suboptimal education about
health and other subjects. I want to
use my influence to help to change
that.
When asked about how she
feels to be a Jamaican woman doing
such great things, she admits that she
feels blessed to be able to represent
Jamaica with her accomplishments.
I do not only represent myself and
my family; I represent my country,
Jamaica, as well. She also credits
her success to her faith in God.

Recently graduated with a Ph.D. in Nutrition Science
from the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryces that are
doing big things for Jamaica! Ja-
maicans abroad are also making our
little island proud too.
Dr. Samara Sterling Bolden,
who recently graduated with her
Ph.D. in Nutrition Science from the
University of Alabama at Birming-
ham (UAB) is at the top of the aca-
demic ladder.
Originally from Linstead, St.
Catherine, Jamaica WI, Samara mi-
grated to the United States when she
was 11 years old. It was a big cul-
ture shock, she recalls. Especially
when it came on to being integrated
into the new school system, it was
tough.
First, it was hard for me to make
friends, and then, I was ahead aca-
demically in terms of what they were
teaching me in school. I was privi-
leged to have had a very good educa-
tional foundation in Jamaica, so it
was hard to remain motivated when
I was learning things I already
knew.
Samara found it difficult to as-
similate into American culture, and
held on tightly to her Jamaican roots.
I missed Jamaica a lot, but I knew
that God had a plan for my family
and my life. His purposes for us are
bigger than we could ever imagine,
and the truth is, I may have never
pursued this path in Nutrition Sci-
ence had it not been for my family
moving to the States.
She first became interested in
formally studying nutrition when her
father began suffering from the ef-
fects of Chronic Kidney Disease
(CKD). During this time as I re-
searched ways to help, I discovered
that nutrition plays a vital role in the
prevention, development, and pro-
gression of many diseases. I became
interested in understanding the sci-
ence behind how nutrition affects
health so that I could help my family
and others in my community.
All throughout her studies,
Samara says she endeavored to hold
on to some of the key principles she
learned through her Jamaican cul-
ture: hard work, dedication, and per-
severance. When I was doing my
Masters, for example, there was a
time when I was literally working
three jobs, she says. And its not
that I did not have supportive parents
who would have helped me finan-
cially. I wanted to be independent,
and I really wanted to work hard to
accomplish my goals, which is some-
thing I value as a Jamaican.
Despite having three jobs,
Samara managed to maintain a 3.9
GPA and graduated from her Mas-
ters program with numerous honors.
She then went on to receive a full
scholarship to pursue her doctorate at
the top research institution in Ala-
bama, UAB. I was ecstatic, she
says, This was a program that ad-
mitted only 3-4 students per year and
paid tuition, health insurance, and a
salary. I was blessed to be one of the
students that were chosen. She man-
aged to maintain a 4.0 GPA through-
out her entire doctoral career, all
while engaging in rigorous research,
planning a wedding, volunteering,
and being actively involved in her
local church.
Because of her achievements,
Samara was invited to be a member
of a very selective, invitation-only
honor society for the top 10% of

here are thousands of chemicals in your
products, many of which are being ab-
sorbed into your body. These companies have
cart blanche to use any ingredient or raw ma-
terial without government review or approval.
This industry is highly unregulated. There is no
pre-product approval before a product hits the
market and enters your home.
Many of these synthetic chemicals are
skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine dis-
rupters and are carcinogenic.
Parabens are widely used preservatives
that prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and
yeast in cosmetic products. Sounds good, right?
Not so fast, they do more than that. Parabens
possess estrogen-mimicking properties that are
associated with increased risk of breast cancer.
They can be found in makeup, body washes,
deodorants, shampoos and facial cleansers. You
can also find them in food and pharmaceutical
products.
Synthetic colors. If you take a look at
your product label and notice FD&C or D&C,
they represent artificial colors. F represent-
ing food and D&C representing drug and cos-
metics. These letters precede a color and
number (e.g., D&C Red 27 or FD&C blue 1).
These synthetic colors are derived from petro-
leum or coal tar sources.

especially thyroid and reproductive hormones,
and a skin irritant. Studies raise concerns that
triclosan contributes to making bacteria antibi-
otic-resistant. There also wasnt enough sup-
porting evidence that washing with
antibacterial soaps containing triclosan pro-
vides any benefit over washing with regular
soap and water. Tricolson can be found in
toothpastes, antibacterial soaps and deodorants.

cern in the best possible way,
if we stay in the relationship, it's
hard to tell if change has occurred
and for what reason. It's like trying
to repair a car while driving down
the highway.
You don't owe it to your
friend to stay in the relationship.
Either of you, short of the altar,
may decide against the relation-
ship. It's better to end the relation-
ship now than to keep going and
suffer for it!
If you end a relationship, do
so with kindness and respect. Let
your friend know that you have
concerns, that you've given it
thought, and that you believe it's
the right decision for you. Share
the concerns if your friend would
like to know, but address them as
behaviors, not traits.
Be prepared for a number of
different reactions. You might get
promises, begging, or anger from
your friend. If you end the rela-
tionship now, it doesn't necessarily
mean that reconciliation may not
happen down the road. Be careful
of setting up the other person or
yourself with that expectation.
The inevitable question ar-
rives, "Can we still be friends?"
This question is often an attempt
by one to stay in the relationship.
Many people slide back into their
