Horoscope Matching - Rasi Kuta in Marriages

Sign compatibility or Rasi Kuta is an important factor in horoscope matching according to

Indian Jyotish Shastra (Sidereal Astrology). Out of the maximum score of 36 gunas, 7 gunas
go to Rasi Kuta. Importance of Rasi Kuta need not be stressed any further.

So, what is Rasi Kuta? It is the compatibility of the moon signs of the couple entering into
wedlock. Whereas Western Astrology considers sun signs based on the tropical system i.e.,
without deducting for ayanamsa (precession) for sign compatibility or horoscope matching,
Indian Astrology considers the moon signs based on the sidereal system i.e., after deducting
the ayanamsa (precession).

Exception: - When both the Rasis are owned by one planet or if the
lords of the two Rasis happen to be friends, the evil attributed above to
the inauspicious disposition of Rasis gets cancelled.

In regard to Satabhisha, Hasta, Swati, Aswini, Krittika, Poorvashadha, Mrigasira and Makha,
the evil given rise to by virtue of common Janma Rasi, Nakshatra and Pada gets cancelled if
the couple are born in the first quarter.

The Janma Nakshatras of the bride and bridegroom, being one and the same, are approved
in case of Rohini, Aridra, Makha, Hasta, Visakha, Sravana. Uttarabhadra and Revati. The
effect would bef ordinary if the common Janma Nakshatras are Aswini, Krittika, Mrigasira,
Punarvasu, Pushya, Pubba. Uttara. Chitta, Anuradha, Poorvashadha and Uttarashadha,
Bharani, Aslesha. Swati, Jyeshta, Moola, Dhanishta, Satabhisha and Poorvabhadra
happening to be common Janma Nakshatras are not recommended.

Even though the Janma Nakshatras are same, the evil becomes nullified if the Padas are
different. If the Janma Nakshatra belongs to two signs (e.g., Krittika) the Pada of the bride
should relate to the preceding sign. For example, if Krittika is the common Janma Nakshatra,
the bride should have her Janma Rasi in Mesha and the bridegroom in Vrishabha. If,
however, the common Janma Nakshatra belongs to two signs equally (e.g., Mrigasira,
Chitta, etc.) the sign for the first two quarters should be that of the bridegroom.

The couple should not have the same Janma Rasi, same Janma Nakshatra and Pada.
However, in regard to Satabhisha, Hasta, Swati, Aswini, Krittika, Poorvashadha, Mrigasira
and Makha, the evil given rise to by virtue of common Janma Rasi, Nakshatra and Pada gets
cancelled if the couple are born in the first quarter.

For a practitioner of astrology, knowledge of birthstones is necessary. At any point of time,
most of us feel dejected saying, I was 'just not lucky'! Not everyone is lucky to be born with
a silver spoon in the mouth or be a confirmed disbeliever. Karma or no karma, fate is a
relative part of our lives. This brings us to the point How to control our destiny? or at best
How to change the course of lives to a better one? Wearing a birthstone is one of the
several magic wands!

Types of Gemstones

The big question is How to select a good birthstone or gemstone? To begin with, there
needs to be clarity about the various types of gemstones. There are, basically, two types of
gemstones:

1. Primary Gemstones

2. Secondary Gemstones

Primary Gemstones: As per Indian Astrology, there are mainly nine primary birthstones - one
each for the nine planets and luminaries -. They are ruby, pearl, coral, emerald, yellow
sapphire, diamond, blue sapphire, 'gomed' and cat's eye for sun, moon, mars, mercury,
jupiter, venus, saturn, rahu and ketu respectively as per the table below: --

Secondary Gemstones: Western Astrology considers other types of precious stones or semi-
precious gems like agate, peridot, aquamarine, topaz, beryl, moonstone etc. These, at best,
can be substitutes for the primary gemstones. Experience and skill of the astrologer can
enable a proper selection of the most applicable secondary gemstone because of their
subtle nature of effects which only those with the knowledge of density, refractive index etc.
can understand. Moreover, these are suggested for a temporary period only.

Birthstones for Months (Western Astrology)

January Deep Red Garnet
February Purple Amethyst
March Pale Blue Aquamarine, Bloodstone
April White, Clear Diamond
May Green Emerald
June White or Purple Pearl, Moonstone, Alexandrite
July Red Ruby
August Pale Green Peridot, Sardonyx
September Deep Blue Sapphire
October Multi-color, Pink Opal, Pink Tourmaline
November Yellow Citrine, Yellow Topaz
December Blue Blue Topaz, Turquoise

Permanent and Temporary Gemstones

When and for what duration should one wear a gemstone? There are differing opinions on
this. Based on the birth chart or horoscope of the native, some astrologers suggest
permanent wearing of a gemstone while some others prescribe gemstones or birthstones
based on the malefic nature of the operating 'dasha' or bhukti and transit influences.
Sometimes, more than one gemstone is prescribed to subdue the malefic effects of more
than one planet or luminary. There are two schools; one considers empathy while the other
supports antipathy. The question for debate is whether the gemstone should counteract the
malefic planet(s) for mitigation or strengthen it for appeasement.

Navratna or The Birthstone for All Purposes & Months

One interesting lucky ring for which there is a craze, particularly, among the wealthy ones is
the one adorned with 'navratna' i.e., nine stones, all embedded on a single ring in smaller
sizes to ward off evil effects or bad energies from all the nine planets and luminaries. Some
people self-prescribe the navratna not knowing that that is lucky only for a few individuals.
Only an astrologer adept in selection of gemstones is competent to suggest this gemstone.
One must carefully evaluate the strengths and afflictions of all planets and luminaries in the
birth chart.

Monday Moon Pearl
Tuesday Mars Coral
Wednesday Mercury Emerald Little Finger
Thursday Jupiter Yellow Sapphire Index Finger
Friday Venus Diamond
Saturday Saturn Blue Sapphire Middle Finger

Weight of a birthstone

Birthstones are embedded either on gold rings or on silver rings depending upon the nature
of the planet or luminary. Ruby, coral, yellow sapphire etc. must be embedded on rings
made of gold. Normally, the weight of a gemstone is measured in carats or in 'rattis'. Two to
three carats weight is common but it can be up to a minimum of five carats in the case of
'Gomed'. A little gap below the stone is suggested by some others insist the stone should
touch the skin. The wavelength of the particular rays is assumed to cause changes in the
physiological and psychological activities of individuals. For this reason, there are
practitioners of astrology who feel gemstones can cure some diseases. No concrete
evidence, however, has been found to exist.

Wear Caution!

Just like self-prescribed medicines, self-prescribed gemstones are dangerous. One should
imitate friends or relatives and start wearing them as they are lucky! You must consult an
expert astrologer like you consult a doctor. One wealthy gentleman showed hesitation in
wearing a silver ring and fought with an astrologer and went to get the gemstone embedded
on a golden ring because silver would undermine his status! Beware of marketers who will
sell you any gemstone or birthstone for a hefty amount with their own theories of the zodiac
and planetary influences. This, I say, because there some who would tell you that there
should be a hairline crack inside the stone for luck!
