Subject Code: 2151909 Date: 19/09/2016
Subject Name: Heat Transfer
Time: 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM Total Marks: 60
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Each correct answer will carry same six marks.

Q.1 (a) Derive general heat conduction equation in Cartesian coordinates.

(b) A steam pipe of 5 cm inside diameter and 6.5 cm outside diameter is insulated with
a 2.75 cm radial thickness of high temperature insulation (k = 1.1 W/mK). The
surface heat transfer coefficient for inside and outside surfaces are 4650 W/m2K
and 11.5 W/m2K respectively. The thermal conductivity of the pipe material is 45
W/mK. If the steam temperature is 200C and ambient air temperature 25C,
determine
i. Heat loss per meter length of pipe
ii. Temperature at the interface
iii. Overall heat transfer coefficient
Q.2 (a) Derive general heat conduction equation in spherical co-ordinates.
(b) A furnace wall is made up of three layers of thickness 250mm,100mm and 150mm
with thermal conductivity of 1.65, k and 9.2 W/mC respectively. The inside is
2
exposed to gases at 1250C with a convection coefficient of 25 W/m C and the
inside surface is at 1100C,the outside surface is exposed to air at 25C with
2
convection coefficient of 12 W/m C. Determine:-

Q.3 (a) Derive equation of heat transfer by conduction through composite wall.
(b) A fin 30 cm long and 10 cm diameter throughout is made of steel alloy of
thermal conductivity 43 W/m-K. The fin attached to a plane heated wall at 200C
temp. extends into surroundings at 25C and heat transfer coefficient of 120
W/m2-K. Find fin efficiency and fin effectiveness. Assume that the tip of the fin is
insulated and thermal radiation effect is negligible.

side and 80 mm long. It is attached to a plane wall maintained at 400C. The
ambient air temperature is 50C and convective heat transfer coefficient at surface
is 90 W/m2K. Calculate the heat dissipation rate from the rod.

Q.5 (a) State the general equation for the rate of heat transfer by convection and hence define
the coefficient of heat transfer. What are the various factors on which the value of this
