veryone thinks that vlogging for a living consists
of coasting easy through life getting paid to take
year-long vacations and posting beach pictures
of yourself on social media. But as with almost
all seemingly glamorous lifestyles, this dream job has its
unrecognized downsides as well. Vloggers can be an easy
target for criticism due to how much of their lives they
put out on social media. Getting trolled, reading hurtful
personal comments, and striving to remain relevant despite
the overwhelming amount of competition isnt a lifestyle
many people can handle. Good thing Cha Ocampo has no
problem getting peoples attention (even when she doesnt
mean to) and has enough patience to stay classy despite the
drama that comes with her job. Get to know why shes the

How did you start travel blogging?
I started blogging about fashion but then natuwa ako
traveling with friends and writing about the places na
napuntahan ko. Super hilig ko kasi maglakwatsa na
parang Dora The Explorer. Naging main goal ko malibot
ang buong Pilipinas. Nakaka-cure ng soul [ang traveling],
ito yung way of relaxing [ko] so its like work and fun at
the same time.
When did you turn it into a career?
Sobrang unexpected niya rin at hindi ko inaakala. I didnt
know na pwede ko siyang gawing work as well. Sumama
ako with Out of Town blog because they invited me to
feature a hotel with them. After that, hotels and airlines
started emailing me and tuluy-tuloy na akong nagkaroon
ng projects.

What do you think made your blog so popular?
Kasi personal yung mga stories ko [I guess]. Naging
interesting siya for people kasi nakikita nila ang journey
ko at kung gaano ako ka-passionate sa traveling. And
feeling ko yung kaka-post ko ng mga photos na mukhang
goals. Like, ang ganda ng photo niya! Uy, goals. Gawin
natin. Syempre, hahanapin nila kung saan yung lugar.
I share things about the place that I feel most people
arent exposed to yet. For example, Boracay seems like the
typically crowded place pero di nila alam na meron palang
part na pwede nila i-explore doon.
You often mention the term goals when talking about
your travel posts. Do you think that its possible for your
audience to reach these goals themselves?
Well actually, yung mga pino-post ko achievable talaga siya.
Minsan kasi, may nagta-tag sa akin na mga followers [na
sinasabi,] O, nakarating ako rito. So, nagiging bucket list
nila yung mga nagawa ko na.
Whats the wildest outdoor activity youve ever done?
Ang dami kong extreme adventures! Sa Coron [Palawan],

diving. Pinakamataas na cliff na tinalon
ko mga 30-feet. Medyo overachiever
and athletic ako so sige kahit ano pang

swimming and hiking. Dati insecure ako
[about my body] at pinipilit ko maging
stick thin. But now Im confident, healthy,
and proud of my body na medyo curvy.
At least I have an ass and a nice pair of
boobs, ha ha!
Do good looks play a big role in being a
successful blogger?
For me, hindi requirement na magpakita
ka kasi there are travel bloggers I know
na puro picture lang ng place pero they
get so many views. Ang galing din
kasi ng write-up nila. Ako kasi, parang
nakilala na ako as Cha Ocampo thats
why I promote [myself] din. You can blog
naman kahit sino ka pa. Diskarte lang
talaga siya.

I wasnt expecting it to blow up on social

they take advantage. So, Im trying to set
standards for myself. I blogged to explain

didnt fight back sa mga nang-bash sa
akin. May isang nagde-defend sa akin
tapos sinasabi niya This aint a telenovela
na love will keep you alive! Because lets
be practical, were all striving hard to earn
for ourselves. May sarili tayong goals. I
work hard and earn money para maging
successful for my family. Id like to date
someone who shares similar goals. Thats
what I was trying to point out with my
followers but it went wrong.

dumped someone for taking you to Mang
Inasal. What can you say about that?
Ini-ignore ko na lang yun kasi parang nakikisabay
lang siya sa issue. Wala naman akong sinabi na fancy
restaurant, sabi ko lang nice. Hindi ko alam kung ano
yung koneksyon nun sa tweet ko. Favorite ko nga [ang]
Mang Inasal, eh! Akala nga ng isang friend ko na sumali
ako sa Pinoy Big Brother kasi naging number one trending
topic yung [pangalan ko] followed by the PBB hashtag.
Whats your advice for dealing with online bashers?
Para hindi maging toxic ang life ko, Ill just post then
read the comments after a few days [have passed]. If may
mga issue-issue? Its better to let it cool down. Sabi nga
ng friend ko, you cant control their actions but you can
control your reaction. Kailangan strong ka talaga. When
I trended [on Twitter because of those tweets], I was able to
get exposure and mas tumaas pa yung engagement with
all my sites. Good or bad publicity is still publicity so okay
rin siya for me. I look at it in a different perspective so that
I wont feel down, di ba? If youre motivated, inspired, and
have the right people around you, it will help a lot.

supervolcanoes to detonate,

 Its the most exciting moment in cinema for Spider-Man fans since
the word QUEENS popped up midway through last years Captain
America: Civil War. The web-slinger is back on the big screen in
Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first installment of this generations second
franchise reboot, and the sixth live-action Spider-Man film in the past 15 years.
But most important, Homecoming is the first Spider-Man film set in the Marvel
Cinematic Universesomething that almost didnt happen, because Sony
Pictures Entertainment owned exclusive character rights to Spider-Man in
film, while the MCU belonged to Disney-owned Marvel Studios. Thankfully, all
was made right in the world when Sony and Marvel Studios reached a deal,
under which the character has been allowed to appear in Disneys Marvel
films (including Civil War and the upcoming Avengers installments) while
Sonys next Spider-Man films have been allowed to be set in the MCU. Its a rare
confluence of corporate interests that brought Homecoming and its planned
sequel to life, making it a testament to Spider-Mans significance in the grander
scheme of superhero cinema.
The 21-year-old Tom Holland is our wall-crawler this time arounda much
younger Peter Parker than both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who
were both in their late 20s when they played the roleand comes with an age-
appropriate storyline. Homecoming is set just a few months after the events
of Civil War, where Peter meets Tony Stark and fights alongside the Avengers
as Spider-Man for the first time. Now, under Starks wing, he faces the greater
responsibilities that come with his greater powers: fighting crime as
Spider-Man and living as an ordinary high school student. All the while, classic
franchise villain the Vulture (who, in an ironic but brilliant casting decision, is
played by Birdmans Michael Keaton) looms overhead.
At the helm of this new Spidey film is director Jon Watts, who has said that
his depiction of a younger Peter Parker is heavily inspired by the work of John
Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles). So, its reasonable to expect a lot

made young Jinri Parks rise to fame a

much intrigued by its people, having had a
sort of invasion in our shores in recent years.
Yes, we can plainly see now that Koreans are
everywhere, in droves. Still, we have not lost
sight of the fact that Koreans, when they are at
their sexiest and cutest, are top hits, and that is
why we are still obsessed with Jinri.
Jinri has been on FHMs 100 Sexiest list
since her 2011 debut on our pages, something
she herself might be surprised of because she
claims not really knowing what she was getting
into the first time. I was a model back then, not
an artist, so I really didnt think of my image,
so I had nothing to lose.
At first, she wasnt quite comfortable with
the sexy tag. I always thought before that
it had a negative effect on my career because I
would always be labeled as sexy, which meant I
could only do certain things that fall under that
category. I dont mind being considered sexy,
but I dont want to be boxed in with that label.
In her early years in the entertainment
industry, Jinri tried out becoming a DJ on RX
93.1 Monster Radio, hosting events like Kpop
Republic, and acting in sitcoms like Vampire
Ang Daddy Ko and web series like Tanods. But
photographers, corporations, and shows kept
giving her projects where she could showcase
her innate sensuality.
I would never get those kinds of jobs that
involved runway walking or high fashion stuff.

I have a womanlier figure. I have to portray
the look that the people or the client wants, so
maybe thats why people think Im sexy.
It wasnt until entering the Pinoy Big
Brother House that people started to get to
know Jinri for what shes really like as a

was the moment that people were like, okay,

People actually thought that I was a
party-going extrovert always out with guys,
so they found me weird and anti-social. But
as they got to know me they understood where
I was coming from. Going in [the PBB house], I
told my manager that I didnt care if I was going to
be the first one out. Like, Im just going in there to
get a worthwhile experience.
Contrary to what she expected, Jinris stay in the
house lasted for quite some time. She got evicted
right before shows Lucky 7 were decided upon,
which gave her more than enough time to reflect
about the numerous things happening in her life. She

constant prodding, Jinri finally came to know how to

day life, Id just walk away from these situations, but
in PBB I couldnt just walk away from it. I had to face
it. As clich as it sounds, I did learn a lot about life
and how to be understanding of other people while I
was inside that house.
So Jinri finally got what she wanted: to get out of

I came from a very sexy image and sort of
[transitioned into] a more wholesome one through
the exposure I got from PBB. Even though some of
the viewers of PBB who see me on FHMs cover again
might question why are you going sexy again? Id
say it isnt about being labeled as sexyits to show
that Ive become more comfortable with who I am
and my body. This is my body and Im confident in
my own skin. Being sexy is a part of who I am as an
artist and Ive embraced it.

 When you ask a person why he or she got
a dog, theyll usually reply something along
the lines of: my dog makes me happy, I get a
dog because Im lonely or Im single, I need a
companion, or because theyre just cute, but
have we ever thought about a dogs life? Was
his or her life fulfilling? Was he or she happy?
Thats why I built the app. I want to make dogs
lives happier.
We dont know about you guys but we
think Jinris made quite the argument that she
isnt just some sexy Korean you can discount.
Im not a one-sided person. Im not just a
sexy model. I am a sexy model, whos a CEO,
who kicks ass at Jiu-jitsu, who acts, and
is interested in so many things. Im
introverted yet Im confident I think.

I just live day by day trying new
things. I dont exactly know where these
choices might take me and honestly, I dont
want to know. And while I do have goals like
becoming a black belt in Jiu-jitsu, I feel like Im

Okay, you can go home at like seven or eight
in the morning, and we have to come back on
set at, like, 11 a.m., so some people would just
choose to stay on set. It seemed like we lived on
set at times.
But Jinri revels in being challenged. After
finally getting down to properly balancing her
daily grind of tapings with other commitments,
she thought that it was good idea to explore
another disciplineJiu-jitsu.
[Jiu-jitsu] has changed the way I view my
life because it teaches you to be very humble.
The martial art recognizes that theres always
going to be someone better than you and who
will beat you even if youre very experienced. I
get this unexplainable fulfillment out of it.
Jinris proven that when she steps on the
gas, she floors it. Apart from her show business
gigs and physical activities, shes dabbled in a
business that shes always wanted to get into:
dog care.
Jinris the CEO of an App called Wagtales, a
one-stop app for everything a dog owner needs.
It can locate the nearest vets, shops, groomers,
and trainers. Wagtales is also in partner with
CARA and PAWS and theyve uploaded their
dogs that are up for adoption.

underestimate
the capability of
enemy forces.
You are not
prepared to
confront a situation that may have
started small, but is now big.
So observes Professor Rommel
Banlaoi, chairman of the Philippine
Institute for Peace, Violence and
Terrorism Research and director
of the Center for Intelligence and
National Security Studies. He is
referring to an incident in 2015, when
a black flag now commonly linked
to ISIS was waved on the grounds
of the Marawi State University in
a demonstration of support for the
international terrorist group.
The Maute Family of Lanao del
Sur was pointed as the instigator,
and Banlaoi says that the family also
used the rally to recruit for what
would become the Maute group, who
with members of the Abu Sayyaf
Group and other Islamist groups in
Mindanao, and as recent reports have
noted, some foreign nationals who
our military believes are jihadists, is
responsible for the Marawi siege.
Some of those recruited were
responsible for the Davao City bombing
in September 2016, Banlaoi says.
Banlaoi uses the word downplay
because, until President Rodrigo
Duterte himself declared on May 30, a
week after fighting began in Marawi,
that ISIS had been supporting
the Maute Group, it had been the
governments stand that the MG
was merely a bandit group trying
to get the attention of ISIS in hopes
of getting support, not least of it in
terms of money. But Banlaoi, who has
spent the last 17 years studying the
phenomenon of terror and violence
in Mindanao, saw it as a warning
when the nascent MG began to make
headlines back in 2015.
The Maute group made it to the
national consciousness when they
openly declared allegiance to the
Islamic State in 2015. After which
they began to kidnap Christian
workers and behead then a la ISIS,
which prompted the military to raid
their camps in Butig Lanao del Sur
in November 2016. The whole Maute
family supports the whole group
that pledged allegiance to ISIS, says
Banlaoi.
ThE FAMIly
The Maute family is not only a
radicalized Islamist family, they are
also a wealthy family.

The Mautes wealth comes from
landholdings and other real estate
property. But they are also suspected
to be involved in illegal activities,
including extortion, illegal drug
trade, and illegal arms trade, says
Banlaoi.
Banlaoi explains their ties to
extremism:
The Maute family is related
with a well-known commander of the
Moro Islamic Liberation Front who
became its vice chairman of military
affairs, the late Alim Abdul Aziz
Mimbantas. Omarkhayam Romato
and Abdullah Maute, brothers and
leaders of the Maute group, are first
cousins of Azisa Romato, wife of Aziz
Mimbantas.
Aziz Mimbantas coddled one
Indonesian Jemaah Islamiyah
militant, Ustadz Sanusi alias
Ishak. They coddled him in a town
in Lanao del Sur called Butig. In
2012, Philippine Law Enforcement
authorities raided the town of Butig,
looking for Sanusi. During the raid
they discovered improvised explosive
devices and materials associated with
ISIS and at the same time a black
flag associated with ISIS. At the time
the authorities had no idea of the
meaning of the black flag.
Sanusi radicalized the Maute
family. Sanusi was killed by law
enforcement authorities in 2012, in
Marawi City. At the time, the brothers
Omar and Abdullah went to school in
the Middle East where they imbibed
the ideology of ISIS. So when they
went back to Lanao del Sur, they
propagated the ISIS ideology, says
Banlaoi.
hOw dO wE MAKE SENSE
OF All ThIS?
Banlaoi asserts that Marawi has
always been special in the strategic
radar of many violent extremists.
Marawi City is meaningful for
Islamist extremists because it is the
only Islamic City in the Philippines.
No other city in the Philippines,
dominated by Muslims, has acquired
that status.
In fact as early as the 90s when
al-Qaeda was still the dominant
terrorist group in the world, Osama bin
Laden selected Marawi City as a place
to establish an Islamic center to train
future jihadists in the Philippines.
This center was indeed established
in Marawi by Mohammed Jamal
Khalifa, the brother in law of Osama
bin Laden. The center was called
Darul Imam ShafiI, where many of
the commanders of the Abu Sayyaf
group, as well as the Bangsamoro

I think will disperse, and through
this dispersal they will operate
in various places in Mindanao
(according to government intelligence
accompanying an article the professor
wrote for news site Rappler, there
are 14 groups in Mindanao who
have pledged allegiance to ISIS). And
unlike the current situation, they will
mount intermittent violent actions
through bombing operations, not
conventional battle with government
forces. To me this is more challenging
and difficult to confront than the
ongoing Marawi incident.
Banlaoi also says that based on
his research there is reason to fear
that ISIS may have already recruited
Filipinos outside of Mindanao. They
have sleeper cells. Mostly from social
media recruitment. If its in Luzon or
Visayas, they target Muslim converts,
age range 13-25. First through
Facebook and eventually through
face-to-face interactions. Like the
case I studied of the Davao bombers
in 2016, one of the suspects was
recruited through Facebook, then a
series of exchanging links eventually
hooked him to violent extremism
associated with ISIS. The FB friend
decided to meet him in person,
and through constant meeting,
encouraged and convinced the person
to undergo training to become a
jihadist in Butig, Lanao del Sur. Then
he was deployed to bomb Davao.
whAT dOES ThE FuTuRE
hOld FOR MINdANAO?
The problem of terrorism in the
Philippines, particularly with ISIS, is
not only a military problem. Martial
Law is just addressing the military
aspect of the problem. But we need
a more comprehensive solution
because the problem of terrorism
in the Philippines is deeply rooted
in a lot of issues: political, social,
economic, religious, cultural issues
that cannot be addressed by Martial
Law. It can only be addressed by good
governance, says Banlaoi.
But good governance is such a big
word.
Precisely. But we have to start
by improving leadership at the local
level. Improve local government
and people will not be enticed by
the ideology of ISIS. But if there is
absence of government at the local
level, there will be a sense of anarchy
and terrorist groups like ISIS will

take advantage of the situation. Thats
why they consider the Philippines
as ripe for the propagation of ISIS
ideology because there is a political
situation conducive to its spread.
And that is poor local governance,
warlordism, and local grievances.
The people on the streets of
Marawi know the ideologyand they
reject it. They even reported to local
authorities about the threat of ISIS in
the Philippines prior to this incident,
but our authorities downplayed the
threat and even dismissed that ISIS has
penetrated the country, says Banlaoi.

And will Mindanao ever fulfill its
promise?
It will continue to be a long
journey to fulfill that promise because
the problem is so complex that the
solution requires a long struggle.
You need to rectify centuries of
historical injustice commited against
Muslims in Mindanao. You have to
rectify the centuries-old problem
of relative deprivation, and the
problem of exclusion generated by
marginalization, says Banlaoi.

actually the solution?
Thats for the future generation to
determine. But right now the current
generation cannot imagine a Philippine
Republic dismembered into pieces. But
who knows? Because that was also the
problem of the Malayan Federation
the generation of the federation did
not imagine Brunei and Singapore
seceding, but the generation after
them made the supreme decision to
determine their own course. Brunei and
Singapore proclaimed independence.
Even Indonesia did not imagine East
Timor becoming separated.
We have to appreciate the fact
that the problem of terrorism in the
Philippines is not only local, but it
also has international dimensions.
Although many of the issues are local
in origin, like grievances, external
influences provide justification
for more acts of violence. External
influences also provide ideological
reasoning for the persistence of
violent activities by resistant groups.
We have to understand that we
are not dealing with a purely local
problem, but it is integrated into
the worldwide problem of violent

arcus Adoro has little
use for fancy clothes.
Shirtless, in shorts and
flipflops, with a ratty
straw hat askew on his
head, he scarfs down
his lunch of chicken
afritada and rice at
Nak-Nak, a roadside
carinderia in San Juan, La Union. No
one minds him because everyone else is
as casually dressed as he is.
First two years ko rito, ang damit
na dala ko lang, dalawang T-shirt,
isang polo, dalawang shorts, Adoro
says. This was 17 years ago, two years
before the Eraserheads (where Adoro
was the lead guitarist) broke up.
Back then, only locals and hardcore
surfers knew about San Juans tall
waves. Today, however, a steady stream
of weary city dwellersmore coffee
chuggers than surferskeeps San
Juans roadside cafes and restaurants
full. It seems this part of La Union
(or Elyu, as La Union has come to
be known) has become the place to
be at for people fed up with noisy,
complicated Manila.
Do they know something we dont?
U pro ot ed
Nung 1997 pa lang, may nagsabi
na sakin na may surfing community
sa La Union, says Adoro. But the

Eraserheads were at their peak then;
Adoro had no time to surf. Three years
laterpatapos na yung Heads nun
sabi ko, Surfing muna ko, ha? Ilang
buwan na pabalik-balik ako rito [sa San
Juan]. Every week, nandito ako.
Through the tumultuous last months
of the Eraserheads, Adoro found more
and more time to spend atop the tall
waves of San Juan. And when the group
finally broke up, word around Manila
was that he had left the music scene and
gone to La Union to become a surfer.
That was more or less true.
Nagsawa ako sa kakakanta, he
says. Binenta ko oto ko, pumunta ko
rito. Tapos yun: I lived the surfer life.
He eventually moved into a one-
garage apartment in San Juan, paying
a monthly rent of P4,000. Years later,
San Juans cluster of surfing school
resorts would pop up on the other
side of the highway, across Adoros
apartment. But when he first moved
in, there were just a few resorts up,
including Sebay Surf Central, where
Adoro spent his weekends before
finding his apartment.
For two years, Adoro used that
apartment as his homebase. He didnt
need much space. All he had were his
few clothes, a laptop, and his wide
collection of DVDs. Lahat ng gamit ko,
naka-box lang, Adoro says.
His move didnt come unnoticed, of

course. And because the Eraserheads
broke up under a shroud of mystery,
everyone was clamoring to know why
they did it. Adoro found out just how
far some people would go to find out:
Minsan, nagsu-surf ako, nasa malalim
na ko. Tapos may sumunod sa king
isa pang surfer. Paglapit, tinanong
ako, Marcus, bakit ba talaga kayo
naghiwalay?
Unperturbed by all the attention
and unwarranted questions, Adoro
went ahead and planted roots. After
the Heads first reunion concert in
2008, Adoro used part of his talent fee
from that gig to finally invest in a plot
of land in San Juan.

Hes done with lunch now and is back
home, relaxing with a beer. Home is a
traditional Pinoy open-air hut, an air-
conditioned metal cube thats the size of
a hut, and, at the front of the property,
a half-finished four-storey structurea
four-story modern hut is the laid out
planthat has an indefinite finish date.

of the huts.
When asked when he and his family
can move in, Adoro throws the question
at one of the workers welding some
beams together: Kailan daw matatapos
to? The worker grunts in reply. Staying
true to the laid back manner of locals
in any Filipino province, Adoro takes a
swig of beer, shrugs, and moves on.
Yung pagtayo ko ng kubo, that
was my appropriation of the surf
culture a long time ago, says Adoro.
Di ba dati may isang kubo lang sa
beach, tapos dun lang nagco-converge
lahat ng surfers? Ngayon magulo pa
rito kasi di pa tapos yung tinatayong
bahay namin, na magiging puro
glass at wood. Pero may method to the
madness yan. May order itong chaos na
ito sa utak ko.
When he and his girlfriend, Mika,
moved to the property, though, the
huts were yet to be built. We lived in
a tent for the first few weeks, says
Mika, whos also the mother of Adoros
youngest daughter. Madalas, may
mga palaka at tuko kaming kasama
sa labas. Kaya alam na ng mga
kapitbahay pag may marinig silang
sigawmay palaka na naman.
Once they were more settled, Mika
taught Adoro how to bake. Sensing
a potential source of income, Adoro
installed a big oven in one of the huts
and started baking. He eventually
became known for it and would receive
orders to supply the resorts around
with their daily bread. Unfortunately,
hes had to stop because of conflicting
work schedules.

 But when he was still baking, even
Adoros chickens appreciated his talent.
He had four of them, and apparently,
all four developed an appetite for
butter and milk, leftovers from Adoros
ingredients. The guys building Adoros
house would feed these to the chickens
when Adoro wasnt around. The native
chickens eventually grew to the size
of turkeys, each weighing eight kilos.
Theyre gone now; what remains is a
fifth chicken, Magi, who loyally stays in
Adoros property. May stretch na wala
kami rito ng ilang buwan, says Mika.
Pagbalik namin, nandito pa rin si
Magi; at marami na siyang itlog.

As more and more people discovered
Elyu, the rural vibe of San Juan began
to shift. On both sides of the highway,
B&Bs, resorts, restaurants, and coffee
shops slowly cropped up. Today, its
not uncommon to see groups of young
people clad in beachwear walking
single file by the highway on their way
to get a flat white at a caf a few meters
from their resort. Obviously used to
buying meals at urban prices, these
weekend warriors inadvertently
support the local industry by never
batting an eye at paying Manila prices
for meals that were locally produced.
But the locals, including Adoro,
know better. Paglipat namin dito, ang
gastos namin per week, P500 lang.
Kasama na dun yung gatas ng baby,
he says. Maganda yung palengke sa
San Fernando. Mura ang fresh seafood.
Bagsakan din dito ng gulay mula
Baguio. Ang okay rito, ang baba ng
cost of living. Kung marunong kang
humawak ng pera, tatagal ka rito.
While he relies on the provincial
capital, San Fernando, for most of
their food, Adoro also takes advantage
of his yard to plant fruit trees. Pag
season ng kalamansi, lagi akong may
calamansi juice na bitbit sa beach.
Isang litrong calamansi juice, he says.
Living in a rural setting was never a
problem for Adoro. He had an itinerant
childhood. But because of his fathers
job at the Philippine Port Authority,
Adoro and his family always lived

within spitting distance of either the sea
or the mountains. He also spent many
summers in Bacnotan, La Unionthe
next town north of San Juanin his
mothers familys tobacco farm.
Perhaps its his affinity to the
rural lifestyle that gave Adoro quick
friends among San Juans budding
entrepreneurs.
Ano sayo, Makoy? the bartender
at popular coffee shop El Union asks
Adoro for his order. Kiss lang, replies
Adoro, disappearing into the back as if
he owns the place.
Like the other establishments along
the highway, El Union has no vacant
tables (its a Monday). Millennial-
age coffee drinkers nurse their cups
of latte to the music of Bob Dylan.
Upstairs, under a slanting anahaw
roof, is a co-working space with high-
speed Internet.
Ayos na, Adoro says, emerging
with a vinyl record of the Rolling
Stones under his arm. There was a
stash of old wax at the back of the
coffee shop. Apparently the owner had
dug them out of its grave. Pinapili
nila ko ng isa, tapos binigay na
sa kin, he says.

Too loud! Adoros youngest daughter
complains from inside their hut,
and turns down the volume on
Mick Jagger. Turn it up! Adoro
halfheartedly whines, but the volume
stays down.
It was this same daughter who
experienced life in San Juan without the
creature comforts that city people take
for granted. School vacation niya, so
dito kaming dalawa. Wala pa yung mga
kubo, kaya naka-tent pa kami, says
Adoro. Tinuruan ko siyang gumawa
ng apoypero may posporo na gamit!
Three times a day, nagluluto kami;
inabutan pa kami ng tag-ulan. Hirap
na hirap siya. Nung tapos na yung
bakasyon niya, naglabas ako ng lighter
fluid at nagsindi ng apoy. You mean
you can just do that? Galit na galit.
Its obvious that music is thick in
the veins of the Adoro children. The

Elves; Adoros older daughter does gigs
of her own, as well.
Pa-obscuran itong mga to ng
[music] sources, Adoro says of his
kids. The youngest two are with him
for the summer. Pero lahat naman,
bumabalik sa classics. Recently, itong
bunso nakikinig na ng Nirvana. Nung
baby siya, Stones baby siya, kasi yun
yung pinapatugtog namin, says Mika.
Now that she makes her own choices,
Nikki Minaj na.
The father hasnt stopped creating,
either. After his stint with the
Eraserheads, Adoro put together
rock band Markus Highway, and still
regularly goes to Manila for gigs and
to jam with other bands. Five years
ago, he completed a project called
Greems, which he published into a
book. In it, he has 100 musical pieces
played in the same key, with the same
chord progression. He plays blues
with another Pinoy rock stalwart Nino
Mendoza of Blue Jean Junkies, as Dirty
Makk and the Kidd. Another project is
in the works: Blues Kamotes, a blues/
punk band. Adoro has already recorded
two of the three albums he wants to do.

Yang beach na yan, malinis yan hindi

says Adoro, watching a group of
young laughing tourists play a
convoluted game of beach football/
volleyball on the sand. Malinis yan
dahil kada Friday, nililinis namin yan.
Lahat, locals; lahat, volunteers.
He finishes off his beer and opens
another bottle. Although he says hes
grown a liking for double black scotch,
beer is still his default drink with
friends. Mas chill si Makoy rito, says
Mika. Bagay sa kanya to.
It does suit Adoro, who dresses the
part of a surfer dude with sunglasses
fashioned from a pair of construction
safety glasses. He spots a vendor selling
balut and asks to borrow the basketan
impromptu idea for another photo.
Balut kayo diyan, he calls,
holding the basket at the crook of his
arm. If not for the fact that hes posing
for the camera as he does this, Adoro
looks as if he does spend all his time
selling duck eggs.
Ang hindi ko maintindihan, yung
pagiging hipster, Adoro says, as he
stands beside his surfboard on the
beach as the sun sets. Because of
information overload, in-a-appropriate
nila ang pagiging cool without really
being cool. Dito, walang hipster-
hipsteran. Pantay-pantay lahat. Pag
nandun na sa tubig, surfers na lahat.

hree years ago, the Philippine Educational
Theatre Association (PETA) debuted Rak of
Aegis. Note: this was legitimate theater, not
high-brow but still in the realm of the cultured,
and yet the response from audiences practically
equalled that of sineng pangmasa. I think
PETAs musical theatre has opened the doors
for that to bring in people from students,
enthusiast, and professionals. I mean, people
came from Davao, Cebu, and even Singapore
just to watch Rak of Aegis, says Maribel
Legarda, Artistic Director of PETA.
Rak of Aegis is the story of a low-income community
living in Barangay Venezia, a place still swamped with flood
water due to a typhoon that hit the area two months ago.
Several of the small businesses in the community are slowly
dying out and all hope seems lost until a video of Aileen (FHM
Babe, Aicelle Santos), the female protagonist, singing the
popular Aegis song, Basang-basa sa Ulan in the rain (and
flood) suddenly became viral. Suddenly, money comes into the
community. In an absurdist twist, the community comes terms
with the idea that they might actually need the flood that they
hated for so long to be able to pull themselves out of poverty.
Everytime people say na, parang Broadway musical
itong Rak. Id always disagree. Its Pinoy and its ours.
Nobody in Broadway would have shown all the trash and
hardship us Filipinos have to go through in our daily lives
and thats why I think it got that much attention from all
types of audiences says Legarda.
With over 300 shows in its two-year run, Rak of Aegis
became the tipping point of PETA to tap into what Legarda
calls the indifferent market. Filipino theater really targets
students from high school and universities but we made
it our mission to try to expand that and infiltrate the
indifferent market. These are the people who would rather go
to a bar or restaurant after work, says Legarda.
A big part of tapping into this indifferent market was done
through social media. Through social media the public can
now experience the world of theater like never before. They
get to witness the entire production process from casting,
down to the rehearsals, fittings, and photoshoots. They get to
know the actors even before they see them onstage. This entire
process culminates when they post their own experience of the
show, which in itself is the best kind of advertising, says Leloi
Arcete, PR Supervisor of PETA.
Through social media, PETA and theater in general
suddenly became more accessible to the every man. Going out
to watch a play wasnt just some fancy activity rich folk do in
their spare time anymore, which is very apt considering most
of PETAs productions tackle pertinent social issues.
Videoke is Pinoy. Comedy, too, is Pinoy, especially in the
context of how we are always able to laugh in the face of the
most difficult circumstances. So its no surprise that Rak of
Aegis resonated so loudly with Pinoys.
The thing with comedy is you can slip in all these issues
that you want to discuss without the audience feeling too
heavy while watching but after they laugh theyll realize oh,
why am I laughing at something terrible?! Thats what we

Following the success of Rak of Aegis, PETA aims to
continue this trend of entertaining yet insightful plays in
order to build-up an audience and widen their market. It
has just concluded its run of 3 Stars and a Sun, a musical
featuring songs by the late, great Francis Magalona.
It was a conscious effort to use another popular music
for our next production, but the similarity ends there. 3
Stars and a Sun is dystopian sci-fi in rap musical theater
form. Even though both musicals were arranged by the same
artist, Myke Salomon, there is a clear difference in terms
of musicality and content of the two plays. While Aegis
torch songs all tug at the heartstrings, many of Francis Ms
haunting and charged songs tackle social issues, politics,
and national identity, says Arcete.
Each theater production house has its own vision and
purpose for theater yet, as Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, artistic
director of Full House Theatre Company, would put it, all of
us just want to create a theater that is Filipino, through and
through. Resorts World Manila featured its first all-Filipino
cast in its readaptation of the iconic movie, Bituing Walang
Ningning back in 2015, which lasted for over a year.
The trend nowadays is to turn musicals into movies
as you would see in movies like Into the Woods, but we see
a lot of potential in [adapting] movies into plays. With the
wealth of cinema material that Viva has this was just waiting
to be picked up to become a musical, its just about having
the right budget in order to produce the shows. Right now,
the only reason why were not going as strong as we would
like is because of budget limitations most original Filipino
productions suffer fromwhen we produce or host English
plays, its easier to find support, says Lauchengco-Yulo.
The influence of Rak wasnt just limited to theater scene;
even television shows like GMAs Sunday Pinasaya was
greatly influenced by this production and has featured some
of the musicals actors including Santos and theater actor,
Jerald Napoles. Theatrical vaudeville has been incorporated
into several shows on television, which slowly familiarizes
the general audience to the humor and artistry of theater.
Even though PETA and a few other small theater
companies have slowly established their own niche market
they can cater to the reach of theater here in the Philippines
pales in comparison to how it is in western countries. When
we went to London recently for research, every theater that
we visited, whether it was a weekday or a weekend, shows
were always full. This is because theater is already ingrained
in their culture at an early age, says Rem Zamora, co-
founder of Red Turnip Theater.
But people in the theater scene are hopeful of how the
public is slowly starting to be exposed to theater. In the
past five years, youll notice that people have really been
noticing that a lot of theatre companies have been churning
out shows. Its not that there are more shows now, there
have always been shows but people havent notice them. Now
that theatre is more visible to the public eye and more people
are watching shows, Id probably call the last five years the
renaissance of Philippine theatre, says Zamora.

When Subaru released the fourth-generation
of its legendary rally-inspired pairingthe
WRX and its big brother WRX STIthe decision

difficult. The WRX and STI used to share the
same 2.5-liter engine (with different power
levels of course), so the STI was always more
desirable since it had not only more horsepower
at 300PS, it also had a better suspension setup,
