Painting The Clay Head

Description

Lesson Goals: Using our understanding of colour and paint, effectively paint the clay head so
that it accentuates the aesthetic qualities of the sculpture.

Outcomes Targeted: GCO 1.2 Explore various art media and their ability to convey message and
meaning.
GCO 6.1 Describe and analyse artwork as a foundation for making judgements
about subject matter
GCO 7.2 Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship of form and function
when solving complex problems.

accentuates its meaning and expression

Key Vocabulary and Paint wash, application, accentuate, relationship, aesthetics


Skills:

Material Needed: Newspaper, water, variety of brushes, variety of acrylic paint colours, black
permanent marker, white latex paint, high gloss lacquer, miscellaneous materials
(ie. Fur, felt, wire, fabric), glue gun, wire cutters

Your Learners: A group of Grade 8 students with assorted range of abilities.

Lesson:

I. Introduction (Teacher organized)

Instructions
1. Review painting steps: i) large areas to small
ii) general to specific
iii) light areas to dark
iv) background to foreground
2. Discuss with students how colour choice and intensity should enhance the sculpture not distract from it.

Driving Question: What are the basic steps for adding colour to a clay head with paint?

Time Allotted: 15 minutes

II. Guided Learning (Teacher/student collaboration)

3. Paint clay head entirely with thin layer of white latex paint, let dry
- seals surface, creates even white surface
4. Choose desired skin tone and paint all skin areas. Ie. Back of head, lips, eye lids. Not whites of eyes or
teeth.
5. Using a pencil, draw circle for iris, then paint in desired colour.
Typically a variation of blue, green, or brown
6. Paint pupil black
7. Using a paint wash ( a wetter mixture of paint), the lips, gums, or tongue can be adjusted to a more
convincing colour.
8. Paint eye bow, hair, and other extras, desired colours.
9. Using various washes, skin can be shaded for more detail
10. Permanent markers can be used for such things as eye liner, freckles, etc.
11. When painting is done, extras such as wire glasses, fur for hair, etc can be added.
12. Make sure name is clearly visible on back
13. Clean up properly

III. Collaborative Learning (Student focused activity)

Procedure: Considering tips from teacher, make choices about colour, and technique that take into consideration the
characteristics of your own personal clay head.
Pay attention to detail, and application.
Help others- offer advice
- Share materials
- Help clean up

Time Allotted: 2 Hours- in unison with guided learning

IV. Grand Finale

At the finished stage, the teacher can carefully spray each piece with a glossy lacquer in order the
create a glassy- like finish, being careful of non- ceramic areas.
Share and discuss results
Put Pieces on display for viewing

Time Allotted: 20 minutes

Differentiation
Give guidance and assistance to each student as needed. Encourage students to try on their own, and help each other
but be prepared to assess level of assistance required for each student.
