Abstract
In this project, a five-stage program is proposed to promote good practices in learners
personal and professional competence development in a public bilingual university in Mexico.
The main objective is to support learners in the development of good and trusting relationships
in the school and the classroom which foster a better cognitive development by the
implementation of a collaborative work plan between students and mentor teachers.
This research includes reflection-in-action, reflection-on- action and reflection-for-action
stages (Schn, 1983) which some problems are tackled in the students performance such as
self-esteem, professional competence and emotional intelligence. In addition to guarantee the
implementation of good practices, both teachers and learners are involved in students
competence development. This research was developed with 130 freshman students who
were taking the second quarter in mechatronics and industrial processes engineering in a not-
private University in Puebla, Mexico.
The results showed a better improvement of 41 of 52 students performance in a physics
course, and 57 of 78 students performance in a computer tools course by project-oriented
learning, case-based learning and problem-oriented-learning approach, including some
coaching-mentoring sessions which contributed to foster a critical thinking development,
suggesting that mentoring and coaching are the most effective means of supporting the
professional development as Hobson et al stated in 2015.

Key words: Mentoring, couching, blending learning, cognitive development, project-oriented learning,
case-based learning and problem-oriented-learning approach.
