DOW CORNING 991 Sealant is a one- temperature on exposure to water

JOINT DESIGN
The sealant joints should be designed
so that the maximum expected joint
movement, including thermal,
settlement and live load, does not
exceed 35% of the joint width.
When detailing the sealant joints using
DOW CORNING 991 Sealant the
following should be considered:
- The minimum width should be 6mm.
For joints between 6-12mm wide a
minimum seal depth of 6mm is
required.
- For joints above 12mm wide, a width
to depth ratio 2:1 should be used up to
a maximum depth of 12mm.
- Joints in excess of 25mm wide are
possible but may require special
application techniques.
It is recommended that specific
recommendations are obtained from
Dow Corning for these special
applications.
- In applications where fillet type joints
are to be used a minimum of 6mm
sealant bite is recommended to each
substrate.
- A sealant used in a fillet type joint
will accommodate less movement
than in a standard joint.

HOW TO USE
Joint Preparation
Clean all joints removing all foreign
matter and contaminants such as
grease, oil, dust, water, frost, surface
dirt, old sealants or glazing compounds
and protective coatings.
Stone and masonry surfaces should be
brushed to remove dust and loose
material before being cleaned with an
appropriate cleaning solution.
Metal and painted surfaces should be
cleaned by wiping with an appropriate
solvent on a lint-free cloth.

adjacent to the sealant joint are masked
with an appropriate tape to prevent
contamination of the substrate and to
ensure a neat sealant line. Masking
tape should be removed immediately
after tooling and before the sealant
starts to form a skin.
Primers
A primer may be required to promote
adhesion on some substrates.
Dow Corning recommends that a test
sample be carried out prior to
application. To confirm optimum
adhesion, testing should always be
carried out prior to the commencement
of any project. Please consult the
DOW CORNING Primer Guide or
consult your local Dow Corning sales
office for further advice.
Back-up materials
Closed cell polyethylene backer rods
are recommended as a joint back-up
material.
Tooling
The applied sealant should be tooled
with light pressure within 10 minutes
of application, to ensure good contact
between the sealant and the substrate.
Tooling of the sealant also gives a
smooth professional finish. Remove
masking tape as soon as the bead is
tooled.
COMPATIBILITY
Incompatibility of the components
used in the joint design, i.e. sealant,
backer rod, setting blocks, etc., can
sometimes cause discoloration or other
aesthetic effects similar to staining and
problem from occuring Dow Corning

sealant detail, adhesion, staining and
compatibility testing as well as site
visits by technical personnel.

USABLE LIFE AND
STORAGE
When stored at or below 30C (86F) in
the original unopened containers, this
product has a usable life of 12 months
from the date of production.
PACKAGING
This product is available in 600ml foil
packs (20 foils per box).
LIMITATIONS
DOW CORNING 991 Sealant should
not be used:
" Against surfaces that bleed oils,
plasticizers or solvents.
" Where abrasion and mechanical wear
will occur such as floor joints in a
pedestrian or vehicular area.
" If used in interior applications and not
exposed to UV light, there is a
possibility that some color change of
the sealant may occur.
" For continuous immersion in water or
in below-grade applications.
This product is neither tested nor
represented as suitable for medical
or pharmaceutical uses.
