Animation

ANIM 1300 - Animation and the Illusion of Motion


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: Animation majors/minors only; others, permission of instructor.

Introduces traditional techniques and history of animation. Explores production from planning to execution. Topics
include history, story, storyboarding, timing, 2D animation techniques, and stop-motion animation techniques.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-lab per week.

ANIM 2300 - Introduction to Digital Animation


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: ART 1610 or ART 1620. Animation majors/minors only; others permission of instructor.

Two- and three-dimensional computer graphics and animation. Emphasis on the aesthetics and techniques for building,
lighting, texturing, animating, and rendering of three-dimensional models to be used in designing and producing three-
dimensional computer-generated animations. Includes a broad survey of the process and techniques involved with
creating digital media quality three-dimensional animations and techniques and aesthetics incorporated into traditional
methods of animations for contrast and comparison.

Must be taken no later than first semester of the sophomore year.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.

ANIM 3040 - Motion Graphics I


3 credit hours
(Same as EMC 3040.) Prerequisites: Admission to candidacy and EMC 1050 with minimum grade of C or permission of
instructor.

Aesthetics, principles, and processes of designing motion graphics for video production, broadcast television, film, and
the Internet. Emphasizes freedom of expression while respecting diversity of media audiences.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.

ANIM 3310 - Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: ANIM 2300 with minimum grade of C.

Continuation of ANIM 2300 for the development of two- and three-dimensional computer graphics and animation.
Further understanding of aesthetics and techniques for building, lighting, texturing, and rendering of three-dimensional
models to be used in designing and producing three-dimensional computer-generated animations. Introduces the
creation and modification of customized lighting models and techniques involved in the compositing of live-action,
sound, and computer-generated images.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.


ANIM 3320 - Introduction to Digital Compositing
3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 1610 and CSCI 1150, CSCI 1160, or CSCI 1170 with minimum grade of C

History, techniques, and applications of compositing in the areas of film, video, and multimedia production. Broad survey
of process and techniques involved with creating composites. Techniques and aesthetics incorporated into traditional
methods of compositing for contrast and comparison. Frequent review and discussion of current work from industry will
occur in the form of media presentations.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.

ANIM 3330 - Animation and Rigging


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: ANIM 2300.

The development of two- and three-dimensional computer graphics and animation. Further understanding of the
aesthetics and techniques for organic modeling, rigging, and animation. Offers greater understanding of complete
animation production, principles, and methods.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.

ANIM 4040 - Motion Graphics II


3 credit hours
(Same as EMC 4040.) Prerequisite: ANIM 3040.

ANIM 4310 - Animation and Performance


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ANIM 3310 and ANIM 3330.

Continuation of ANIM 3330 for the development of three-dimensional computer graphics and animation. Further
understanding of the aesthetics and techniques for creating animation for film, television, games, motion graphics, and
VFX. Serves as additional preparation for the required senior capstone courses and offers greater understanding of
advanced character animation production, organic modeling, and rigging.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.

ANIM 4400 - Animation Seminar I


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: Senior standing; ANIM 4310.

Part one of two senior capstone courses for animation students. Students will create an original animated short film
from concept to production. Emphasis placed on story. Instruction on career planning and self promotion also covered.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.


ANIM 4410 - Animation Seminar II
3 credit hours
Prerequisite: ANIM 4400.

Part two of two capstone courses for animation students. Students continue work on original animated short film and
see it through to completion. At the end of the course, students submit completed films to various film and animation
festivals around the world. Additional instruction on career planning and self-promotion covered.

Three-hour lecture plus up to three-hour lab per week.

ART 1030 - Art Appreciation
3 credit hours

An introduction to art structure and styles of art; relationships between past ideas and current trends.

ART 1610 - Two-Dimensional Design


3 credit hours

The principles and techniques of design and their application to two-dimensional art forms. Six-hour studio course.

ART 1620 - Drawing I


3 credit hours

Develops observational drawing skills and a formal drawing vocabulary; introduces various drawing materials. Six-hour
studio course.

ART 1630 - Three-Dimensional Design


3 credit hours

Emphasis on elements of design as they operate in the three-dimensional environment. Six-hour studio course.

ART 1640 - Drawing II


3 credit hours

Prerequisites: ART 1610 and ART 1620 with a minimum grade of C. A continuation of ART 1620 with specific emphasis
placed on drawing processes and expression. Six-hour studio course.

ART 2310 - Graphic Design Technologies


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 1610 and ART 1620. Procedures involved in the production of graphic design materials by means of
computer. Basics of word processing, drawing, and page layout programs for graphic design. Six-hour studio course.

ART 2325 - Typographic Design


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: ART 2310 or permission of instructor. An introduction to typography including the history, usage, and
anatomy of letterforms. Projects focus on creative problem-solving using type as image as well as a means of
communication. Projects range from word interpretation to page layout using industry-standard applications. Six -hour
studio course.
ART 3325 - Word and Image
3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 2325 and permission of instructor. Explores the relationship between word and image. Projects focus
on visual language, concept, formation, and technical skills. Various design methodologies covered using industry-
standard applications. Current designers and design trends introduced. Six-hour studio course.

ART 3610 - Introduction to Computer-Assisted Art


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 1610, ART 1620, ART 1630, and ART 1640 or permission of instructor. Explores the use of the
computer in relation to art and design concepts in two- and three-dimensional media. Six-hour studio course.

ART 3620 - Intermediate Computer-Assisted Art


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 1610, ART 1620, ART 1630, and ART 1640. Computer-generated or assisted art work. Development of
original work in art or design. Six-hour studio course.

ART 3650 - Figure Drawing


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 1620 and ART 1640. Introduces concepts. Specific concepts include gesture and expression, spatial
structure and proportion, and the effects of light and drapery on the human form. Six-hour studio course.

ART 3930 - Interactive Design I


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 2310, good working knowledge of digital imaging, and permission of instructor. Multimedia design,
including the design, planning, and creation of web sites. Six-hour studio course.

ART 4280 - Digital Illustration


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 1610, ART 1620, ART 1640, and ART 2310; permission of instructor required. Vector software and the
conceptualization, technical skills, and professional practices of digital illustration. Six-hour studio course.

ART 4390 - Interactive Design II


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: ART 3930 and permission of instructor. An intermediate interactive design class with an emphasis on
interface design. Focuses on design, planning, and creation of Web sites using industry-standard Web design
applications. Six-hour studio course.

Visual Communication
VCOM 2010 - Introduction to Visual Communication
3 credit hours

Overview of concepts for effective visual communication; the role of visual elements and design practices in a cultural,
historical, and political context; basic typography and design, electronic and digital composition and reproduction, and
technological aspects of design and production.

VCOM 2950 - Visual Communication Applications


3 credit hours

Introduction to software applications used in publication media design, related hardware and peripheral components
applicable to publication design, and electronic publishing procedures.
VCOM 3920 - Information Web Design
3 credit hours
Prerequisite: VCOM 2950. Introduces software, design principles, and technology used for communicating concepts,
information and narratives through websites and digital media. Overview of social, political, copyright, and ethical issues
involving websites, digital and social media. Combined lecture/lab.

Information Systems
INFS 1000 - Introduction to Computers and Related Topics
3 credit hours

An overview of the workings of a computer including hardware, software, and applications. Provides hands-on
experience with various software packages. (Not open to business majors.)

INFS 2400 - Web Development


3 credit hours
Web development using HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and multimedia Web content. Covers planning, design,
development, and publishing of a Web site.

INFS 2600 - Introduction to Software Development and Programming


3 credit hours
Programming logic and concepts using the .NET programming environment. Includes program design, data types, data
structures, flow control, arrays, error control, graphical user-interfaces, and file processing as applied in the context of
business information systems problem solving.

INFS 3450 - Web Application Development


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: INFS 2400 or permission of instructor; admission into the College of Business. Focuses on designing and
developing Web-based applications. Topics may include JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and other emerging web development
technologies.

Mechatronics Engineering
ENGR 1100 - Engineering Fundamentals
3 credit hours

Prerequisite: MATH 1630 or MATH 1730. Introduces various engineering fields. Emphasis on problem-solving techniques
and the use of mathematics in analyzing technical problems. Topics such as graphical representation of data, estimation,
dimensions, units, error estimates, statistics, and team work addressed. Engineering ethics and impact of engineering
solutions on society and the environment.

ENGR 2100 - Introduction to Engineering Design


3 credit hours
Introduction to computer-aided design (CAD) for product design, modeling, and prototyping. Individual use and team-
based environment to design and prototype a functional and manufacturable marketable product. Application to design,
manufacturing, and analysis using geometric tolerancing and dimensioning. Two hours lecture and three hours
laboratory.
Engineering Technology
ET 2310 - Computer-Assisted Drafting and Design I
3 credit hours

Covers basic technical drawing/sketching and drafting concepts using personal computers, plotters, and appropriate CAD
software. Two hours lecture and three hours laboratory.

ET 3360 - Computer-Assisted Drafting and Design II


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: CMT 3320 or ET 2310. Utilizes PC and CAD software to develop skills in the creation and analysis of
mechanical solid models for design and production purposes. Includes the use of shading and rendering to enhance
three-dimensional model display and the extraction of two-dimensional engineering drawings. Two hours lecture and
three hours laboratory.

ET 4330 - Advanced Computer-Aided Drafting


2 credit hours
Prerequisite: ET 3360 or permission of instructor. Topics include customizing menus, 3-D concepts and surface modeling,
AutoLisp, rendering, and slide shows. Interactive computer drafting and design using advanced AutoCAD software and
add-ons. Primarily for students who want to increase their capabilities using CAD. One hour lecture and three hours
laboratory.

Computer Science
CSCI 1170 - Computer Science I
4 credit hours

Prerequisite: MATH 1730 with a grade of C or better or Math ACT of 26 or better or Calculus placement test score of 73
or better. The first of a two-semester sequence using a high-level language; language constructs and simple data
structures such as arrays and strings. Emphasis on problem solving using the language and principles of structured
software development. Three lecture hours and two laboratory hour.

CSCI 2170 - Computer Science II


4 credit hours

Prerequisite: MATH 1730 with a grade of C or better or Math ACT of 26 or better or Calculus placement test score of 73
or better. A continuation of CSCI 1170. Topics include introductory object-oriented programming techniques, software
engineering principles, records, recursion, pointers, stacks and queues, linked lists, trees, and sorting and searching.
Three lecture hours and two laboratory hours.

CSCI 3080 - Discrete Structures


3 credit hours
(Same as MATH 3080.) Prerequisites: CSCI 1160 or CSCI 1170 and MATH 1910 or consent of instructor. Topics include
formal logic, proof techniques, matrices, graphs, formal grammars, finite state machines, Turing machines, and binary
coding schemes.

CSCI 3110 - Algorithms and Data Structures


3 credit hours
Prerequisite: CSCI 2170; corequisite: CSCI 3080. Topics include additional object-oriented programming techniques,
algorithm design, analysis of algorithms, advanced tree structures, indexing techniques, internal and external sorting,
graphs, and file organizations.
CSCI 3130 - Assembly and Computer Organization
4 credit hours
Prerequisite: CSCI 2170. Assembly language and the organization and basic architecture of computer systems. Topics
include hardware components of digital computers, microprogramming, and memory management. Laboratory exercises
involve logical, functional properties of components from gates to microprocessors. Three lectures and one two-hour
laboratory.

CSCI 3240 - Introduction to Computer Systems


4 credit hours
Prerequisites: CSCI 2170 and either CSCI 3130 or ET 3620. Provides a programmer's view of how computer systems
execute programs, store information, and communicate. Topics include machine-level code and its generation by
optimizing compilers, computer arithmetic, memory organization and management, networking technology and
protocols, and supporting concurrent computation. Three lecture hours and one two-hour laboratory.

CSCI 4250 - Computer Graphics


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: CSCI 2170 and CSCI 3080 or consent of instructor. Topics include vector drawing displays, raster scan
displays, input devices and techniques, graphics software, transformations, projections, interpolation, and
approximation.

CSCI 4700 - Software Engineering


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: CSCI 3080, CSCI 3110, and COMM 2200. Consists of a theoretical component and a practical component.
Topics include the history of software engineering, software development paradigms and life cycles, and computer-aided
software engineering (CASE). Team project developed in parallel with the theory.

CSCI 4800 - Software Testing


3 credit hours
Prerequisites: CSCI 2170 and CSCI 3080. Integrates theory and applications of software testing techniques. Provides
actual hands-on testing experience. Considers multiple testing paradigms.

Communication
COMM 2200 - Fundamentals of Communication
3 credit hours

Principles and processes of effective public oral communication including researching, critical thinking, organizing,
presenting, listening, and using appropriate language. Emphasis on informative, persuasive, special occasion, and
extemporaneous (impromptu) speaking. Counts as part of the General Education Communication requirement.
