Designing of lifting system as an alternative for the

Hydropower Generation

Introduction:
Hydropower is the cheapest way of producing power. It have very long history and the turbines
are used from the time when no electricity were discovered. From time to time huge development have
been made in improving the efficiency of turbines and also different types of turbines are developed.
Today turbines are mostly used for the generation of electricity from the potential energy of the water.
Though hydroelectric power generation is very efficient mean of electricity production but still there are
few challenges which prevent and restrict the way of power generation. Following are few factors

1) Huge initial cost

2) Difficult to reach the working site making it impossible for the construction especially in hilly
areas where water have huge amount of potential energy.

The water losses most of its energy in pipes (due to frictional flow in pipes) before reaching to the
turbine. Similarly nozzles and notches also effect the overall efficiency of the power station.

The dilemma is that we can not control the losses . we must allow water to go through pipes and water
must have certain velocity after the passage through turbine .

In Pakistan northern areas are hilly areas and most of reveres of Pakistan come out of these areas.
Everyone will observe water fall from great heights. There are number of cites which are technically very
feasible for the hydropower station. But most of cites are in the areas which are difficult to reach .
making it impossible for construction and the delivery of heavy machinery.

3. Aim and Objectives:

The aim of the project is to develop and formulate a plane which can overcome the dilemmas in
conventional hydropower plants. The plane is to check the feasibility of lifting system for hydropower generation.
The lifting system will be like the chair lifts but in place of chair there will be water tanks which will be filled from
the upstream (uphill) and will be allowed to go down by the use of potential energy of the water. The power will
be collected from the wires lifting the tanks. The tanks will be drained down to stream.
4. Literature Review :
For literature review we will use the feasibility report of saiful maluk hydropower project (the
report is attached with proposal).
