Chemical safety/Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Essential How does a scientist identify substances and dispose of them safely? Question Possible 1. How to clean up a chemical spill infomercial Product/s or 2. Create a redesigned MSDS entry for a chemical safety wiki 5 Ways to 1. Students will use Chromebooks to access the internet to research how infuse chemists classify matter and identify unknown substances. Technology 2. Students will collaborate with one another using Google Docs to share their research and information. 3. Students will film infomercial and use WeVideo to edit and publish video on how to deal with a spill of a specific chemical. 4. Infomercials will be posted on Google Classroom. Students must view at least 5 other videos and use the comment function to offer feedback to fellow classmates. 5. Students will analyze current MSDS sheets for chemicals using online tools such as https://www.flinnsci.com/sds/. Students will redesign MSDS sheets to be easier to read at a glance. These new safety sheets will be uploaded to a wiki and shared with local industry experts for feedback and review. Topic 2 Battery Design: Electrochemistry, Reversible reactions Essential What battery design is best in terms of safety, cost, and efficiency? Question Possible Digital Poster Session Product/s 5 Ways to 1. Students will use search engines to research the key components of infuse batteries and the types that exist. They will share their results in a whole Technology class Google Doc. 2. Students will experiment with various metal combinations in online simulators to determine the best combination to use in a battery. http://www.kentchemistry.com/moviesfiles/Units/Redox/voltaiccelll20.htm 3. Students will conduct a cost and risk analysis of metals they want to use in their batteries. Metal pricing data will be obtained online, safety and toxicity concerns from MSDS databases. 4. Students will use Glogster to create digital posters to display their findings and final suggestions for a battery design. 5. Students will view all of the posters from their class and select the best proposal. Each student will complete a rubric using Google Forms to evaluate the merits of each design. 6. Design finalists will be proposed to local battery manufacturers for consideration. Facetime or Skyp will be used to conduct a discussion between the industrial experts and the classroom. Topic 3 Household Chemistry: Acid/Bases, pH Essential What products in my home are acids? Bases? Neutral substances? Question Possible Classroom presentation of finding using Google Slides including at least Product/s one video clip made by the group. 5 Ways to 1. Students will pick 10 household products (foods, cleaning supplies) and infuse do an internet search of the chemical properties of the main ingredients. Technology They might also use www.chemspider.com for their research. 2. Students will bring in samples of their 10 products to test in the lab. They will use their cell phones to take pictures and film various tests, such as pH paper, addition of acid-base indicators, to keep a digital journal of their results. 3. Students will compile their results with their group members in Google Docs. They could also use Instagram as a place to house and share their images from the lab. 4. Video footage will be edited and shared with each other using WeVideo. 5. Students will create a Google Slides presentation that will be presented to the class about their findings. 6. Students in the audience will use a Google Doc to keep a record of all of the household items that were tested and categorize them as acids, bases, or neutral. Conflicting data will be analyzed at the end of the presentations using the visual evidence gathered by the different groups.
