To Explore the possible future of a world that embraces Totalitarianism as

a system of government.

What does this system believe?

Ideology or belief system.

The state controls all aspects of life.

The individual works for the state.

There is no individual freedom nor is there the right to this freedom.

Freedom is not valued in this system.

The attitude is that individual freedom is a dangerous concept that should be

obliterated.

Rigid control is exercised in 1984 through the classification and division of

society into three separate classes Inner Party, Outer and Proles.

How does this power structure ensure control of its people and the
implementation of its ideology?

It develops a complex social, political and economic structure that controls

every facet of a persons life.

o Means of control over the personal life of the individual or the

social system.

o Constant monitoring of the daily movements of the life of the

individual.

o Use of technology to ensure that everyone conforms.

o Telescreens, microphones and of course the regimentation of time

and place. No one can meet without permission.

o Everyone is forced to live a communal lifestyle join groups.

o The breakdown of the personal life state controls who you meet,
why you meet, who you marry, and even the procreation process.
 There is no such thing as love nor is there loyalty to any one
person or group except Big Brother or the state.

Political control
Use of propaganda ensures that the state message of love of an
anonymous figure is reinforced Posters, repetition, slogans, paradoxes,
ministry of truth.
An enemy is provided as the scapegoat for the society to vent their anger,
frustration or as a means of sexual release.
Goldstein and Hate week.
The use of the enemy without complements the enemy within.
This means that the population are in a constant state of fear or anxiety.
The government is controlling through psychological manipulation.
Role of thought police robs a person of the right to individual thought.
To ensure this they devise a language system that robs the people of the
words to express new ideas or challenge old ones- Ungood as opposite of
good.
It rewrites past and changes history no-one can challenge what they
cant remember. They cant compare if there is nothing to compare to. The
past is always up to date.

Economic
Everyone has an assigned role as a worker of the state.
This role depends on social class and ability.
The economic system is regulated no capitalism since it is associated
with freedom to choose.
The state owns and controls business.
Stifles innovation but ensures conformity.
Constant shortages and rationing mainly because the individuals needs
and desires are secondary to the states need to be prepared for war.

The system works through a blending of economic, social and political

structures.
To ensure ultimate control there is the use of fear and torture or a
mixture of physical and psychological torture.
