SOLUTION:

PROBLEM 1 (10 Points): For each of the structures below, determine whether they are fully
restrained or partially restrained and whether they are determinant or indeterminate. Assume all
cables, if present, are in tension.

(b) (c)
(a)

FBD of (a)

T T (a) 3 equations, 3 unknowns. All three equations of equilibrium

can be satisfied i.e. = 0 , = 0 and = 0. So fully
restrained and determinant.

FBD of (b)

T F (b) 3 equations, 4 unknowns. All three equations of equilibrium

can be satisfied i.e. = 0 , = 0 and = 0. So fully
restrained and indeterminate

PROBLEM 2 (10 Points): An unknown force P acts on the gear-tooth as shown below.
Assume that bearing A provides no axial restraint and bearing B does provide axial restraint.
Calculate the magnitude of force P required to keep the system in equilibrium.

Components of force P are given by

P = [Pcos20;0; -Psin20]

Take moments about the y axis gives: (CCW +)

= cos20 0.1 200 0.08 + 100 0.08 = 0

P = 71N

PROBLEM 3 (10 Points): The structure shown below is constructed from steel pipe with a
mass per unit length of 4kg/m. Calculate the tension in cable FC.

FBD of AEDCB
W1 = 849.8 = 313.6N
By
T From symmetry x1 = 1m
Bx
W2 = 149.8 = 123.2N

From Table x2 = 2+12/ = 2.64m

Now taking moments about B

= 0 +CCW

W2 sin 30 2 1 1 2 2 = 0
T
Solving gives T = 639N

Alternatively we can find the C.o.M which would be
at

= = 1.46 and then solve the resulting
1 +2
equilibrium equation.
