The granting of a Visitor Visa gives you the right to enter Australia for a temporary period in order to visit
family/friends, holiday or business purposes. This Guide explains your visa conditions and other factors which may
affect your stay in Australia.
Wherever possible we encourage you to visit the websites provided . The information in this Guide is current
at the date of preparation and it is important to check whether there have been any changes to fees or forms prior to
lodging your visa application. Please ensure you retain a copy of your Visitor Visa Information Pack & Application
Guide so you can continue to refer to it both now and in the future.
Once the Visitor Visa is granted, there are several conditions which will regulate your entry and stay in Australia. If you
do not abide by these conditions, your visa may be cancelled and you may be subject to other penalties. These
conditions may also affect your ability to extend your stay in Australia as a visitor or for another visa type.
Page 3
In order to qualify for a Visitor (Business or Tourist) Visa to Australia, you must satisfy certain visa criteria at the time
of lodging your application. These criteria include:
In order to satisfy this criteria, applicants are required to demonstrate that they seek to visit Australia as a visitor for
the purpose of visiting an Australian relative or for a purpose other than a purpose related to business or medical
treatment. Therefore, you must demonstrate that you have genuine intentions to travel to Australia as a visitor or to
sightsee for a period of 3 months or less (unless applying for a Long Stay Visitor Visa).
As part of the application process, you may be required to demonstrate that you have access to adequate funds' for
personal support during the period of your intended visit.
Important:
Although you are not required to provide evidence of your access to 'adequate funds' as part of your visa application,
the Australian embassy processing your papers may contact you to request additional documentation if they believe it is
appropriate to do so. In all cases, it is important to refer to the specific instructions provided by the Australian embassy
where your application will be processed as they may have set preferences as to the type of documentation you should
include with your application.
There is no set definition of adequate funds'. However, in the event that you are requested to provide such
documentation, evidence of funds availability may take the form of:
Bank statements and/or passbooks over the last 3 month period prior to lodging; and/or
Letters from banks and/or other financial institutions concerning your financial position or your access to the
funds of another person; and/or
Air tickets that have already been purchased; and/or
Such other evidence that satisfies the decision maker. This may include a letter of support from relatives/friends
in Australia who will be offering you accommodation, etc.
Note that you should not purchase an air ticket in order to satisfy this criterion. It is preferable to await confirmation of
the visa grant prior to purchasing your air ticket.
If you have an Australian relative, friend or Company inviting you to come to Australia and is willing and able to provide
support either financially, through accommodation or otherwise, you will need to provide a Letter of Invitation in support
of your application. The letter should be notarised.
The Letter of Invitation should be drafted by your Australian contact and must state the following:
Your full legal name, date of birth, current address and telephone number, country of nationality and residence,
if it's a different country;
Your relationship to your Australian friend or relative;
The intended purpose, duration of your trip and departure and return date;
Whether you will be travelling alone or will be accompanied by your family members;
Where you will reside while in Australia; and
Whether you will be responsible for all costs associated with your trip, or whether your Australian friend/relative
undertakes to cover the expenses during your visit to Australia.
The letter must also include information regarding your Australian friend/relative. It must include:
Page 4
The Australian host must provide the following documentation in support of the statements made in the Letter of
Invitation:
A document proving their status in Australia, such as a Australian birth certificate or a passport and a local
identity card copy such as a health card or driver's license;
A letter confirming their employment from the employer showing position, date of start of employment and
current earnings; and
If applicable, a mortgage statement or property evaluation showing your ownership of property and a bank
statement showing sufficient savings.
Business visitor
Business Visitor applicants must have 2 copies of the letter of invitation from a business partner/ host business in
Australia and their 24-hour contact details.
If there is a business relationship in place, your letter of invitation can explain the reasons for a visit and outline all of
the topics listed above, specifically as relating to your intended business activity in Australia. In addition, the letter
should include:
The names of the Australian companies that will be hosting the event;
A contact person, an office address and a telephone number;
Indicate the purpose of the trip, including invitation, registrations and hotel confirmations for seminars, trade
shows and conferences, if applicable;
Provide copies of contracts, bills of landing to confirm the existing business relationship, if any;
Outline how the costs of the trip will be covered;
Copies of contracts and/or bills to support your visit, if applicable;
State that your place of business/source of income is outside Australia;
That your remuneration/wages paid are outside Australia; and
Outline your intended activities and indicate that these are ones that are generally not generally paid in Australia.
Other useful documents include travel documents showing previous travel abroad and business document indicating an
ongoing business relationship with the inviter.
If you are granted this visa, you can study for up to three months. If you want to study longer than three months you
should apply for a student visa.
You are not able to work in Australia. If you are coming to Australia to work, you should consider applying for a visa
which allows you to work in Australia.
This Visa allows you to make short business trips to Australia for a period of up to three (3) months to perform business
activities.
Work is generally not allowed, however, you may be allowed to engage in limited work if for example it is highly specialised
and non-ongoing (generally less than six (6) weeks).
You must not undertake work that can be done by an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Other entitlements on
this visa type include:
Attend to business activities in Australia including conferences, business negotiations or exploratory business visits
Page 5
Other specific factors which may be of concern to the case officer assessing a Visitor Visa application include:
a. Visitors 75 or over
Due to the higher potential public health costs for visitors aged 75 or over, applicants may be required to provide
evidence of private health insurance covering their proposed period of stay in Australia.
Note: applicants who are nationals of countries who have a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia are exempt
from this requirement.
Australia has reciprocal health care agreements with New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the
Netherlands, Sweden and Finland.
Visitors in this age group are required as a minimum, to obtain a medical report of 'fitness' from a doctor regardless of
the period of stay they are seeking. In some instances, these applicants may also be required to undergo a medical
examination and/or chest x-ray for a stay of over 3 months.
b. Unaccompanied Minors
This factor applies to applicants who are under 18 and are unaccompanied by their parents and will be staying with a
person in Australia who is not a relative.
In such a situation, the visa decision maker will require an undertaking from the person who will be caring for the
minor. Whilst there is no specific form that the undertaking must have, in general it must be 'an undertaking to provide
accommodation for and to be responsible for the support and general welfare of, the applicant during the applicant's
stay'.
In the event that this is part of your application, you will receive specific instructions from the Australian embassy
processing your application about any further documentation which may be required.
c. Health Criteria
Depending on the risk level of an applicant's country of citizenship or any country in which the applicant has resided for
more than 3 months in the past 5 years, it may be necessary to undergo a health examination.
If this is necessary, you will receive instructions from the Australian embassy processing your application on how to go
about completing the health checks.
New Measures:
If the visa applicant is applying from outside of Australia and has spent a period of 28 days or longer on after 5 May
2014 in Afghanistan, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia or Syria, or in any
combination of these countries, they should be vaccinated against polio prior to their departure. The visa applicant
should provide their current certificate of vaccination against polio. If they are lodging a new application,
this should be provided at the time of lodgement.
Applicants attending a medical appointment with a panel physician should be informed that they should take their
Page 6
If the applicant does not provide the vaccination certificate at the time they apply, or at the time they undertake their
medical appointment, their case officer may request evidence of the clients polio immunisation status and this could
delay the visa application.
d. Character Criteria
In order to enter Australia, you must be of good character. Generally speaking, you are not required to provide any
documents in relation to your character. However, if you have answered "yes" to 'do you have any criminal convictions',
in our eligibility assessment, you will need to declare this information in your Visitor Visa application.
In such cases, you may be required to provide further details to assist the visa processing office in understanding your
background before they are able to make a decision on your application.
e. Repeat Visits
The Tourist Visa is designed only to allow temporary travel to Australia for tourism purposes or to visit family and
friends.
Please note that your Tourist Visa will allow you either a single or multiple entry into Australia. You will be able to stay
for a period of up to three, six or twelve months.
The period of stay granted will depend on the purpose of your visit to Australia.
If whilst you are in Australia you wish to extend your stay for tourism purposes, you must apply for a new visa at least
two weeks before your current visa expires.
You should note that a further visa, if granted, will cease any visa or ETA currently held and the entitlements attached
to that visa or ETA.
If a decision has not been made on your application before your original visa expires, you will be able to remain lawfully
in Australia until the application has been finalised.
If you are refused a further visa, you must leave Australia before the expiry of your authorised stay period.

ONLINE LODGEMENT
As you are a citizen of Dominican Republic, you are eligible to apply for a Tourist Visa subclass E600 online with the
Department of Immigration and Border Protection in addition to lodging a paper based visa application with your closest
Australian Embassy which is located in Canada. We recommend that you lodge your application electronically as it is
easier to manage and allows you to check back on the progress of your application whilst waiting for a decision.
To learn more about the online lodgement option, please refer to Section 4 "Lodging your Visa Application".
Once you start your online application, you will be asked a series of questions to determine whether or not you are
eligible to continue. If the eVisa system indicates you are not eligible to apply online, you will need to apply by mail or in
person.
If relevant, please refer to the next section of this Guide regarding how to make a written application.
There is no Australian mission in your country. Please use contacts of Australian missions in Canada.
To send your documents by courier, please use one of the following address(es):

Canada
Note: You can lodge your application in person or by mail. If you choose to mail your application, please use a secure
form of mail (i.e. registered post or courier) to ensure the safe delivery of your passport.
Important Note:
Many Australian embassies have recently entered into arrangements with Visa Application Centres (or Service Delivery
Partners) which provide visa and citizenship application and lodgement services and offer greater accessibility and
extended opening hours. These centres are usually knows as VFS and there are often many locations within the one
country to cater for different regions.
When you visit the Australian embassy website for your nominated area, please check whether they have an authorised
VFS centre and ensure that you follow the correct instructions for lodging your visa application.
Whilst the VFS centres facilitate lodgement and collection of visa applications, all decisions on the actual visa application
will be made by the Australian Embassy or Australian High Commission in the region.
As you are not eligible to apply for your Visa to Australia online, you will need to complete and submit an application by
post.
Before you lodge your application, please check where and how to lodge your application with a departmental office.
You may need to make an appointment to visit the office in person.
Your visa will be linked to the passport number you use in your application and you must use the same passport to
travel to Australia. Make sure your passport is valid for the period of stay you are applying for. If you obtain a new
passport, you must advise the department of the new passport details before you travel to Australia. Otherwise, you
will experience significant delays at the airport and could be denied permission to board your plane.
As you are lodging a paper-based visa application in certain countries you may need to provide biometrics.

will be provided by your local Australian embassy.
In order to lodge a valid Visa Application, you must complete the current version of the visa application form. You will
also be able to download these application forms from your local Australian Embassy/VFS office.

In support of your application, you can send original documents or clear certified true copies of the documents. This is
preferable in order to avoid the risk of losing your original documents. Documents can be certified as true copies when
an authorised person views the original document and the copy of the original document. He/she then signs, dates the
copy of the document and indicates the following statement: I certify this document to be a true copy of the original
document. This must be done for each copied document individually.
Documents can be certified in Australia or elsewhere, regardless of where the document was issued. However the
person certifying the document must be authorised to do so in the jurisdiction where the documents are certified.

4.3 Translation
Any documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. A certified translation must
include an affidavit from the translator who has translated the attached documents and is fluent in English and the
language in which the document is in. Translations must not be prepared by a family member or any person included in
your application or any person with an interest in your application. A certified translator is a person certified by the
government of the country or province where the documents are being translated as authorised to provide certified
translations. They are generally members of an association or a certified body of translators.
Important Note:
Please check with your local Australian embassy to find out about their payment options prior to lodging your Visitor Visa
application.
Also please note that in the event that there is a VFS centre which is responsible for collecting your visitor visa application,
you will be required to pay a separate fee to cover their service delivery. Full details will be available on the Australian
embassy website.
Before your application is submitted, take the opportunity to review all the information and documentation provided and
compiled. Once you are satisfied with the application, read through the entire application and make sure you
understand all your responsibilities.
Page 12
The processing time for your Visitor Visa can vary depending on the visa office handling your application. With most
straight forward applications, they are generally finalised within 7-14 working days.
However we would recommend that you lodge your Visitor Visa application approximately 3 months before your
intended travel to Australia.
In the event that you require a Visitor Visa urgently, the specific reasons should be set out in a covering letter
requesting urgent processing.
Once a decision is made, you will receive a letter confirming the visa grant and your passport will be returned. The
grant will be evidenced by way of a Visitor Visa label in your passport.
It is important to check the visa label to ensure all details are correct and that you understand any visa conditions which
may have been imposed (see below).
In the event that the application is not successful, you will receive a decision record setting out the reasons for the
refusal.
When your visa is granted, there are several conditions that may be imposed. These conditions will regulate your stay
in Australia and may also affect your ability to apply for further stay in Australia.
Please read through the following visa conditions carefully . If you fail to comply with any of the visa conditions
attached to your visa, then you may be subject to cancellation and/or removal from Australia.
If your circumstances have changed since you made your visa application, and as a result an answer to a question on
your visa application form or the information you have given about your visa application is no longer correct, you must
advise DIBP in writing as soon as possible.
Please make sure that you include your name, date of birth and Application ID when contacting DIBP.
You can provide this information by letter or email, together with any accompanying documents. If you are notifying the
department of a change to your email address by sending an email from your new email address, you must include
details of your previous email address, as evidence that you have authorised the change.
The following forms are useful for notifying the department of changes in circumstances and are available on the
department's website at http://www.border.gov.au/allforms or at any of our offices:
Page 13
Please note that your obligation to notify DIBP of any Change of Circumstances continues even after the visa has been
granted if such changes occur before you make first entry on your visa. However, if any changes take place after you
have made first entry to validate' your visa, you are n longer required to notify DIBP of such events.
It is important to check your visa grant letter (and/or visa label) to confirm the validity period of your Visitor Visa.
Generally, most Short Stay Visitor Visas are valid for a period of 12 months with a maximum of 3 months stay from the
date of each entry. If your visa allows for multiple entry, this means that you can enter Australia as many times as
necessary within the validity period of the visa (for a maximum stay of 3 months from the date of each entry).
If you have any questions regarding the visa validity period, or visa conditions, please contact your local Australian
embassy for assistance.
