Anticipatory Set: 5 minutes (Focus and review) Class take out your math notebook and a pencil and
get ready to take notes for comparing numbers. Before we start, class which number is bigger 45 or 56.
Correct, the answer is 56. We are now going to learn how to use symbols when comparing numbers
from out friend Pancake the Alligator.

Instruction with Guided Practice: 20 minutes

Slide 1 As a class we just compared the numbers 45 and 56. As a class we decided that the number 56
was greater than the number 45. Before we go to the next slide lets count to 100 from 0. (Together we
count to 100) Great job class!

Slide 2 - Class as we can see Pancake has a notebook and a pencil in his hand ready to write. Lets
take some brief notes. (Give students a few minutes to write down the vocabulary) Read each of the
definitions explain that greater than is the biggest number, less than is the smaller number and equal
to means that they are the same number and have the same value.

Slide 3- Shows the symbol for the greatest number

Slide 4- Shows the symbol for the less than number.

Slide 5- Shows the symbol for the equal numbers. Yes, this is the equal sign that we use in adding and
subtracting.

Slide 6- Is the over view of the symbols. This is where I ask if there are any questions are comments
about what we just learned. Also, remind them that no question is silly and if they have a question there
is probably someone else with the same question.

Slide 7- This is practice problem/example problem. It shows the alligator eating the biggest number.
Slide 8 This is the slide that shows that pancake needs our help and goes into the practice. These
questions will be answered as a group. Also, remind the students to write down some of the examples
in their notebook
Slide 9 States Pancakes problem that he is hungry and that he needs to figure out which flies are
greater, less than, or equal to. Also, remind them to use the correct symbols when speaking it out loud.

Ex. 41 is greater than 56

Slides 10 17 are the practice that we will do as a class. They will speak the answers out loud and
use the correct terminology. If the students seem to be struggling on certain ones or show that they are
not understanding the concept stop and go back to slide 2. Even though this is not a Smart Board
activity they can still use the markers to come up and circle the answers before the PowerPoint shows
the answers. Have students raise their hand and as a class ask the question the students will then help
the student at the smartboard decide which answer she will circle you then can click the next button
and the answer should appear on the PowerPoint.

Slide 18- Tell them the students that they did a great job helping Pancake

Slide 19- Ask if they have any questions about any of the examples that we just covered or any
questions in general.

Slide 20 Is where we transition into more practice individually. Handout the worksheet to each
student and tell them that this is a work alone worksheet and that if they have any questions they are to
raise their hand and you will come to them to answer their question.

Independent Practice: 10 minutes the students will complete the worksheet that is attached. If the
students have any questions they can raise their hand and ask the teacher. However, as you are
watching the students if you see a student that is sitting there staring at the paper go over there and ask
them if they are understanding the worksheet. This is an independent worksheet where they are not
allowed to work with other students. Students should be able to correctly answer 16/20 problems
correct (80%)

Closure: 10 minutes Today we talked about comparing numbers using the correct symbols greater
than, less than, or equal to. I want everyone to use the number that they are assigned (each student has a
number on the desk per last name) and write the problem on the board and show the answer you got
using the symbols like you did on the worksheet. * assume I have 20 students. Review the answers on
the board. Just going by and having the class say if its correct or not correct. If its incorrect have the
students say the correct answer. At the end have the students turn the worksheet into the turn in tray
and get ready for specials.

Note if a student(s) is absent dont worry about the question. Since they are turning in the
worksheet I will be able to see if grasped the concept correctly. Also make them turn their
worksheet over and have pencils down so they do not correct their answers. I need to see if they
are understanding the concept of comparing numbers.
Since question 20 is a word problem give the student the option to read their problem out loud at
their desk or at the front as a teacher and have the class answer the problem. They should find
this fun
Total time: 45 minutes
