VMw are ESXi is factory-installed on some Dell™ systems. For a list of these systems, see the latest Dell Systems
Software Support Matrix on the Dell Support w ebsite at
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/omswrels/index.htm. You can use Server Administrator W eb
Server version 6.2 to access VMw are ESXi 3.5 update 5 and VMw are ESXi 4.0 update 1 systems.

Dell OpenManage on VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 5

You can use Server Administrator to manage a system w ith VMw are ® ESXi virtualization softw are. VMw are ESXi
and the instrumentation agent is factory-installed on some Dell™ systems. For a list of these systems, see the
latest Dell Systems Software Support Matrix on the Dell Support site at
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/omswrels/index.htm.

You can install the Server Administrator Web Server on a management station and log on to a managed system
pre-installed w ith VMw are ESXi and the instrumentation agent to perform systems management tasks.

For information about the VMw are ESXi virtualization softw are, see the VMw are support site at
www.vmware.com/support.

For information on installing the Server Administrator W eb Server on a management station, see "Ins talling Managed
Sys tem Software on Microsoft Windows Operating Systems."

Dell OpenManage on VMware ESXi 4.0 Update 1

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator is available as a .zip file (oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.2.0-A00.zip) to
be installed on systems running on VMware ESXi 4.0 update 1. The oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.2.0-A00.zip
file is available for dow nload on the Dell Support w ebsite at support.dell.com.

Dow nload VMw are vSphere Command Line Interface (vSphere CLI) from http://www.vmware.com and install on
your Microsoft W indow s or Linux system. Alternately, you can import VMware vSphere Management Assistant (vMA)
into your ESXi 4 host.

Using the vSphere CLI

1. Copy the oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.2.0-A00.zip file to a directory on your system.

2. If you are using Microsoft W indow s, navigate to the directory in w hich you have installed the vSphere CLI
utilities to execute the command mentioned in step 4.

If you are using vSphere CLI on Linux, you can execute the command in step 4 from any directory.

3. Shut dow n all guest operating systems on the ESXi 4.0 host and put the ESXi 4.0 host in maintenance mode.

4. Execute the follow ing command:

vihostupdate.pl --server <IP address of ESXi 4 host> -i -b <path to Dell OpenManage file>

NOTE: The .pl extension is not required if you are using vSphere CLI on Linux.

5. Enter the root username and passw ord of the ESXi 4.0 host w hen prompted.

The command output displays a successful or a failed update. In case of a failed update, see
"Troubles hooting".

6. Restart the ESXi 4.0 host system.

Using the VMware vSphere Management Assistant

The vSphere Management Assistant (vMA) allow s administrators and developers to run scripts and agents to
manage ESX/ESXi systems. For more information on vMA, see
http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vima/.

1. Log on to the vMA as an administrator and provide the passw ord w hen prompted.

2. Copy the oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.2.0-A00.zip file to a directory on the vMA.

3. Shut dow n all guest operating systems on the ESXi 4.0 host and put the ESXi 4.0 host in maintenance mode.

4. In the vMA, execute the follow ing command:

vihostupdate --server <IP address of ESXi 4 Host> -i -b <path to Dell OpenManage file>

5. Enter the root username and passw ord of the ESXi 4.0 host w hen prompted.

The command output displays a successful or a failed update. In case of a failed update, see
"Troubles hooting".

6. Restart the ESXi 4.0 host system.

W hen you run the command, the follow ing components are installed on your system:

Server Administrator Instrumentation Service

Remote Enablement

Server Administrator Storage Management

Remote Access Controller

You must install the Server Administrator W eb Server separately on a management station. For information on
installing the Server Administrator Web Server, see "Ins talling Managed System Software on Microsoft Windows Operating
Sys tems " and "Installing Managed Sys tem Software on Supported Linux Operating Sys tems ".

NOTE: Ensure that you install only Server Administrator Web Server version 6.1 and later. Server
Administrator Web Server version 6.0.3 is not supported on VMw are ESXi 4.0 and later.

After installing Server Administrator, you have to enable Server Administrator Services. For information on enabling
these services, see "Enabling Server Administrator Services on the Managed System."

Troubleshooting
When attempting to use the vihostupdate command, the follow ing error may be displayed:

unpacking c:\oem-dell-openmanage-esxi_6.2.0-A00.zip

metadata.zip.sig does not exist

signature mismatch : metadata.zip

Unable to unpack update package.

This error is displayed if you are using an older version of the Remote CLI. Dow nload and install the vSphere
version of the CLI.

When attempting to use the vihostupdate command, the follow ing error may be displayed:

Unable to create, write or read a file as expected.I/O Error (28) on file : [Errno 28] No space left on
device.

See the VMw are KB article 1012640 at http://kb.vmware.com to fix this error.

Enabling Server Administrator Services on the Managed

System
The Server Administrator Web Server communicates w ith the VMw are ESXi system through the Server
Administrator Common Interface Model (CIM) provider. The Server Administrator CIM provider is an OEM provider
on the VMw are ESXi system. CIM OEM providers are disabled by default on VMw are ESXi. You must enable the CIM
OEM providers on the VMw are ESXi 3.5/ESXi 4.0 system before accessing it using Server Administrator W eb Server.

Enabling CIM OEM Providers Using VMware Infrastructure Client

(for VMware ESXi 3.5)

To enable CIM OEM providers using the VMw are Infrastructure (VI) Client, you need to have the VI Client tool
installed. You can access the tool from http://<ip_address> w here <ip_address> is the IP address of the VMw are
ESXi system.

To enable CIM OEM providers on the VMw are ESXi system using VI Client:

1. Log in to the VMw are ESXi system w ith the VI Client.

2. Select the Configuration tab.

3. Under the Software section on the left side, click Advanced Settings.

4. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, click Miscellaneous on the left pane.

5. Change the value of the Enable OEM Provider field to 1.

6. Click OK.

7. For the change to take effect w ithout restarting the system, use the Restart Management Agents option in
the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) on the local console of the VMw are ESXi system.

If the changes are not effective and you cannot connect to the VMw are ESXi host using Server Administrator,
restart the VMw are ESXi system.

Enabling CIM OEM Providers using VMware Infrastructure Remote

CLI (for VMware ESXi 3.5)
To enable CIM OEM providers using the VI Remote CLI, you need to have the VI Remote CLI tool installed. You can
dow nload and install the tool from the VMw are w ebsite at http://www.vmware.com/go/remotecli/.

To enable CIM OEM providers using the VI Remote CLI on Windows:

1. Open a command prompt.

2. Navigate to the directory w here the Remote CLIs are installed. The default location is C:\Program
Files\VMware\VMware VI Remote CLI\bin.

3. Execute the follow ing command:

vicfg-advcfg.pl --server <ip_address of the ESXi host> --username <user_name> --password

<password> --set 1 Misc.CimOemProvidersEnabled

NOTE: If you do not specify a user name and passw ord, you are prompted to specify the same.

4. For the change to take effect w ithout restarting the system, use the Restart Management Agents option in
the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) on the local console of the VMw are ESXi system.

If the changes are not effective and you cannot connect to the VMw are ESXi host using Server
Administrator,, restart the VMw are ESXi system.

Enabling CIM OEM Providers Using vSphere Client (for VMware

ESXi 4.0)
To enable CIM OEM providers using VMw are vSphere Client, you need to have the vSphere Client tool installed.
You can dow nload and install the tool from https://<IP_address of ESXi 4 host> w here <ip_address> is the IP
address of the VMw are ESXi 4 system.

To enable CIM OEM providers on the VMw are ESXi 4 system using vSphere Client:

1. Log on to the VMw are ESXi 4 host system using vSphere Client.

2. Click the Configuration tab.

3. Under the Software section on the left side, click Advanced Settings.

4. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, click UserVars on the left pane.

5. Change the value of the CIMOEMProvidersEnabled field to 1.

6. Click OK.

7. For the changes to take effect w ithout restarting the system, use the Restart Management Agents option in
the Direct Console User Interface (DCUI) on the local console of the VMw are ESXi system.

If the changes are not effective and you cannot connect to the VMw are ESXi host using Server Administrator,

restart the VMw are ESXi 4 host system.

Configuring the SNMP Agent on Systems Running VMware

ESXi 4
Server Administrator generates SNMP traps in response to changes in the status of sensors and other monitored
parameters.You must configure one or more trap destinations on the system running Server Administrator to send
SNMP traps to a management station.

Server Administrator supports SNMP traps on VMware ESXi 4 but does not support SNMP Get and Set operations
because VMw are ESXi 4 does not provide the required SNMP support. You can use the VMw are vSphere CLI to
configure a system running VMw are ESXi 4 to send SNMP traps to a management application such as IT Assistant.

NOTE: For more information about using the VMw are vSphere CLI, see the VMw are support site at
www.vmware.com/support.

Configuring Your System to Send Traps to a Management Station

Using the vSphere CLI
1. Install the VMw are vSphere CLI.

2. Open a command prompt on the system in w hich the vSphere CLI is installed.

3. Navigate to the directory in w hich the vSphere CLI is installed. The default location on Linux is /usr/bin and
on W indow s is C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin.

4. Configure the SNMP setting using the follow ing command:

vicfg-snmp.pl --server <server> --username <username> --password <password> -c <community> -t

<hostname>@162/<community>

w here <server> is the hostname or IP address of the ESXi system, <username> is a user on the ESXi system,
<password> is the passw ord of the ESXi user, <community> is the SNMP community name and <hostname>
is the hostname or IP address of the management station.

NOTE: If you do not specify a user name and passw ord, you are prompted to specify the same.

5. Enable SNMP using the following command:

vicfg-snmp.pl --server <server> --username <username> --password <password> -E

6. View the SNMP configuration using the follow ing command:

vicfg-snmp.pl --server <server> --username <username> --password <password> -s

7. Test the SNMP configuration using the follow ing command:

vicfg-snmp.pl --server <server> --username <username> --password <password> -T
