PART THREE - COMPREHENSION

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. Remember to
return to the passage to find clues for your answers.

Food Web

A food chain, also called an energy chain, shows the food relationship among
living things. This energy chain always begins with plant-life and ends with an
animal. Two or more connected food chains are called a food web. An example of
a food chain in the web above, shows how energy is passed from the grass, to the
mouse, to the snake and then to the hawk.

In food chains there are producers and consumers. A producer is a living thing that
makes its own food from the sunlight, the air, and the soil. All the energy made
from the' food chain comes from the producers. Green plants are producers that
make food in their leaves. A consumer is a living thing that cannot make its own
food. Consumers get their energy by eating food from plants and animals. All
animals are consumers.

All living things must have energy to survive. A food web shows how energy is
passed on to all organisms in many food chains. It shows the feeding habits of
different animals that live together in an ecosystem. Living things in a food web
depend on one another for survival. In nature, the food relationships among living
things help to control the population of different animals in the community.
Introduction or removal of any living thing will disrupt this balance.
