Narrative Leads/Hooks (Personal Narrative)

Task: Write about a day in your life that you will never forget.

>> Im writing about my schools choir teams participation in the state-level choir competition.

Style 1: Question

Have you ever had an experience so great that you wish you could turn back time so that you could
experience it all over again? I have. It was the day my schools choir team got selected for the state-
level competition. We couldnt believe our ears and were on cloud nine when we heard about the
good news. Imagine being selected out of twenty-nine school, what are the odds? We were just
some small town school choir team, the other teams came from well-known musical school. Who
would have ever thought that we could win the competition? I blew our minds.

Style 2: Announcement

We are selected as finalist for the competition! our choral master, Mr. Clarke announced to us
happily, he was beaming with pride. I turned around and saw my fellow choir mates smiling from ear
to ear. It was the happiest day of our lives. Our dreams had finally came true, we were going to
represent the school at state-level!

Style 3: Opinion

A family is made up of people who love, support and trust each other with all their hearts. Hence, I
would say that our choir team is like a large family. We are made of different races, gender, beliefs
and characters but when we come together as one, we are one family. I think that is one of the main
reason we could make our story a success. We joined the competition last June, training hard every
day, falling sick in between practises, skipping practice because of work and other school activities
along with many other challenges. Despite all those challenges we managed to make our way
through to the finals and get into the state-level competition.

Style 4: Quotation

Stand straight. Open your mouths wide. Breathe into your stomach. Do you warm up. Dont drink
iced drinks. Dont eat spicy food. These are some of the advice given to us by Mr Clarke every single
day prior to the competition. Mr Clarke our choir master was a great teacher. He was patient and
excellent at what he does. We listened, we obeyed and we put it into practice. And sure enough we
won the competition. It was like a dream we wished we would never wake from.

Style 5: Personal Experience

I was 17 when my schools choir team got selected to represent the district for the state-level choir
competition. I was in my senior year, I was amazed by how I managed to juggle choir practice,
sports, co-curricular activities and my studies. I was not a high achiever but I tried my best as it was
what I loved. If I was given another chance, I would not change anything and do it all over again. Our
victory was sweet as it was a victory well-earned. It was indeed one of the best days of my life and I
would never forget that day.
Style 6: Figurative language.

The chorus rose in a crescendo like a tidal wave hitting the coastlines and Boom! our tenors and
sopranos hit the high notes at precisely the right time. It was so moving, the audience had goose
bumps. Our voices blended well with each other, it was so melodious and harmonious, one could
close their eyes and imagine voices of angels singing along to the sound of harps and wind-chimes.
The judges were in awe. They were lost for words. We were so good, we won the competition hands
down. And six months down the road, we were now headed to the state-level competition in Johor
Bahru.

Style 7: Descriptive Introduction

Our choir team was made up of thirty singers, ten sopranos, eight tenors, six altos and six basses.
They were boys and girls from ages thirteen to seventeen in our team, namely the form one until
form five students. Our choir master was Mr Clarke; our sweet conductor, Emily; and our awesome
pianist, Yong. It was a beautiful blend of talented people. We have some of the best singers one
could ever find in our school, from the high-pitched song bird Kayleen to the macho, deep-voiced
Amirul. This amazing combination of talents combined with a lot of hard work and discipline was the
perfect recipe for success. It was proven when our team was selected to join the state-level
competition.

Style 8 : Imaginative Introduction

If I could describe our performance that evening, the word I would use was magical. I could feel the
clouds beneath my feet as I was lifted up into the sky by the piece Adiemus; a song composed by
the brilliant Karl Jenkins. Each note was sung so perfectly, I dare say that even the Gods and angels
wept in tears of happiness. If songs could stop wars and gain human eternal peace, this would be the
song. However, reality isnt always as we imagined. Even though we couldnt stop wars, we did share
some happiness, peace and calm with our audience and judges that night. So much so that they
decided that we should win the competition. And we did indeed win it. It was the proudest moment
in our lives.
