Figure 1 Green colour bars shows vibration level at all points shows acceptable level
Previously unit was found to be high in vibration in June17 routines on the pump side with 8.4 mm/s, where
the pump decided to be replaced. On 14/7/17 after was replaced, casing vibration has been attempted in
three occasions with 3 different engine speeds which 1100 rpm, 950 rpm and 1000 rpm.
Comparing the three measurement set shows that the pump is acceptable to run at below 1000 RPM when
compared to the published standard ISO 10816-7.
At the end of the report, several recommendation is suggested expecting the unit can increase its production.
Abbreviate Last Measurement
Transmitted engine
vibration
On the first occasions where the engine was running at 1100, highest vibration occurs at the
gearbox section in the direction of horizontal axis, where it is predominantly by gearbox output
shaft (pump turning speed). This high level vibration could be caused by either resonance or by
unbalance (initiated by keyway at the gearbox output shaft) force at this point.
Engine speed = 950 rpm
While the unit running at 950 rpm of engine speed, vibration at all measurement point is
acceptable with the highest recorded at the engine with 3.9 mm/s. However, there is noticeable a
raised noised floor at the pump DE and NDE bearing in the direction of horizontal axis where
mostly it is related to resonance issue.
Engine speed = 1000 rpm
On the third occasions where the unit running at 1000 rpm of engine speed, highest vibration
recorded at pump NDE in the direction of horizontal axis. Based on the spectral data at this point
as depicted on figure above, the dominant peak is the engine turning speed with observed a raised
noise floor around the pump turning speed, shows their resonance symptom at this frequency
area.
Recommendation:
Based on the overall vibration level and interpretation of the spectral data, there are two recommendations
is suggested on this unit to lengthen its reliability such as:
1. Always make sure the pump is operating in allowable range and the preferred operating range (in
general 70 % to 120 % of the BEP) accordance by the pump manufacturer. Outside the allowable
operating range higher vibration values may occur. They are the result of higher dynamic forces during
partial-load and overload operation of the rotor-dynamic pump.
2. Verify (retighten the bolts) that there is no loose holt down bolts on the engine side as this will create
rocks back and forth motion, and will transmit vibration to the pump side thus create a huge impact on
the pump side, hence will deteriorating the pump internal part such as wear ring, mechanical seal and
etc. The torsional motion and dynamic forces on the engine side also could create secondary effect of
the pump such as rubbing.
3. Ensures and verify that the engine fuel and governing system is in accordance to service schedule to
eliminate engine misfiring. Such symptom could create excitation or torsional forces that overlay the
other measurement point such as pump NDE.
4. Uncouple run the pump from the gearbox on any available slot and CBM personal will record the
vibration level to i the source of high vibration at the gearbox input shaft.
