Karl Ditters, born in 1739, was an excellent

violinist and a prolific composer who for
many years was in the service of the
Bishop of Grosswardein. His autobio-
graphy of 1801 tells how in 1765 he met naS* ' F , 1 , i t

'the brave Pichelberger' in Vienna and -- -

engaged him for the Bishop's Court
Orchestra.
It was for 'the brave Pichelberger' that
Dittersdorf wrote the two solo concertos,
t};.e Sinfonia Concertante and tlne Duetto
for double bass and viola. We no longer
have Dittersdorf's autographs, but
Sperger's set of parts, though in a careless
Viennese copyist's hand, are complete,
together with his own cadenzas. (Sperger
was Haydn's double bass player in the
Esterhzy Orchestra). These manuscripts
have provided the basis for the present
edition.
The l8th Century Viennese double bass or
vioione had five or sometimes six strings
tuned in a combination of thirds, and
fourths (most commonly Fr Ar D Ff A).
Complex passages written for an instru-
ment of this kind which involve harmonics
or arpeggios across the strings often need
adapting or simplifying for a modern bass
tuned in fourths (Et 4t D G). The present
edition makes a few suggestions as to how
this may best be done, but ultimately the
choice has been left to the player.
x Concerto No. 1 (Krebs 171) also dates
from
1766 and was first published by Schott
(Ludwig and Franz Jaeger 1937). The
present edition restores all the bars
omitted in the earlier version.

Concerto No. 2 (Krebs 172) was probably
written in 7767 or later, and was first
pubiished by Schott (Franz Tischer-Zeitz
1938). In adapting the work for modern
performance, Tischer-Zeitz altered many
passages and omitted a great deal. It is
possible that he had access to another
source, but the present edition remains
faithful to Sperger's Viennese parts.
Sinfonia Concertante (Krebs I27) was
written in 1766 and was first published by
Hofmeisterin a reliable version byWilhelm
Altmann (1938). The present edition has
several changes in the last movement
where the manuscript sources are
ambiguous.
Except for Sinfonia Concertante, notated
 throughout in D major, the orchestral
material of the conqertos is notated in the
MS in the key of Eh. The present edition
keeps the work in D major, the original
key in which the solo parts are notated.
The illustrations show the title pages
of the three works and also the MS of
Sperger's cadenzas for Concerto No.2.
Sinfonia Concertante is published separ-
ately as YE 0058 and the two solo concertos
are published together as YE 0059.
Orchestral material is available for hire
only in D maJor. Duetto for viola and
double bass is published in an edition by
Wolfgang Stert as YE 0018.

Karl Ditters wurde 1739 geboren. Er war
ein ausgezeichneter Geiger, komponierte
viel, und stand viele Jahre in Diensten des
Bischofs von Grosswardein. In seiner 1801
geschriebenen Autobiographie erzhlt er
davon, wie er dem 'braven Picheiberger'
1765 in Wien begegnete und ihn fr das
bischfliche Hoforchester verpflichtete.
Fr Pichelberger schrieb Dittersdorf dann
auch seine beiden Solokonzerte, die
Snfonia concertante und das Duetto frtr
Kontrabass und Bratsche. Dittersdorfs
Autograph ist verschollen, aber Spergers
Stimmen, wenn auch flchtig von einem
Wiener Kopisten geschrieben, sind voll-
stndig und enthalten seine eigenen
Kadenzen (Sperger war Haydns Kontra-
bassit im Esterhzy-Orchester). Diese
Manuskripte bilden die Grundlage fr die
vorliegende Ausgabe.
Der Wiener Kontrabass oder Violone des
achtzehnten Jahrhunderts hatte fnf,
manchmal auch sechs Saiten, die in einer
Verbindung von Terzen und Quarten
gestimmt wurden (meistens F'ArD FIS,A).
Komplizierte Passagen fiir ein solches
Instrument, mit Flageolett-Tnen oder
Arpeggios, die sich ber mehrere Saiten
erstrecken, bentigen hufig eine Bear-
beitung oder Vereinfachung fr den
modernen, in Quarten gestimmten Bass
(E' A' D G). In der vorliegenden Ausgabe
stehen einige Vorschlge, wie dies am
besten durchzufhren ist, doch bleibt die
Entscheidung darber letztenendes dem
Spieler berlassen.
*Das Konzert Nr. I (Krebs 171) stammt
ebenfalls aus dem Jahre 1766 und wurde
erstmalig von Schott (Ludwig und Franz
Jaeger 1937) verffentlicht. In der vorlie-
genden Ausgabe sind alle in der frheren
Fassung ausgelassenen Takte wieder
eingefgt worden.
*Das Konzert Nr. 2 (Krebs 172) wurde
wahrscheinlich 1767 oder noch spter
geschrieben. Es erschien erstmalig bei
Schott (Franz Tscher-Zeibz 1938). In
seiner Bearbeitung ftir Auffhrungen in
der heutigen Zet, hat Tischer-Zetz viele
Passagen gendert und viel ausge.assen.
Mag sein, dass ihm eine andere Quelie zur
Verfgung stand; jedenfalls folgt die
vorliegende Ausgabe getreulich den
Wiener Stimmen von Sperger.
* Die Sinfonia concertante (Krebs 727)
stammt aus dem Jahre 1766 und wurde
erstmalig von Hofmeister in einer zuver-
lssigen, von Wilhelm Altmann besorgten
Ausgabe 1938 herausgegeben. Die
vorliegende Ausgabe enthlt einige
Anderungen im letzten Satz, an Stellen,
an denen die handgeschriebenen Quellen
zweifelhaft sind.
Die Tonart fr die Konzerte, abgesehen
von der Sinfonia concertante, die durchweg
in D-Dur steht, ist Es-Dur. In der vorlie-
genden Ausgabe stehen alle Werke in
D-Dur, der Tonart, in der die Solostimmen
ursprnglich notiert wurden. Die
Abbidungen zeigen die Titelbltter der
drei Werke, sowie das MS von Spergers
Kadenz fr das Konzert Nr. 2.

 Dre Sinfonia concertante tst als gesonderte
Ausgabe mit der Bezeichnung YE 0058
erschienen. Die beiden Solokonzerte
wurden zusammen herausgegeben; die
Bezeichnung fr die letzteren ist YE 0059.
Das Orchestermaterial in D-Dur ist nur
leihweise erhItlich. Das Duetto fi.ir
Bratsche und Kontrabass ist in einer
Ausgabe von Wolfgang Stert, mit der
Bezeichnung YE 0018 erschienen.
