Ingersoll RandTrane Company

CLIMATE COMMITMENT
Executive Summary
Ingersoll Rand has made a climate commitment to increase
energy efficiency and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)
related to their operations and products. Based upon this climate
commitment, Mr. Slattery has communicated a broad need for further
workforce training within various areas in order for Trane Company to
be able to meet this commitment. The areas of training breakdown into three separateyet
interconnected areas of study.
First, Mr. Slattery expressed an overarching need for a better understanding of the nature of
our environment and the benefits that sustainability can have in growing their company. Next, the
workforce needs to be able to incorporate their knowledge of environmental issues and regulation,
to learn how to build new relationships with agencies, government groups, non-profits and
customers so as to understand present and future marketplace needs while also possibly sharing
best practices to help Trane create new solutions and reduce their own carbon footprint. Finally,
he wants Tranes engineers to increase the pace of sustainable innovation.
This is precisely what Kaplan University is prepared to facilitate. The Kaplan ELS education
professionals have listened closely to Mr. Slatterys needs and have created tailored educational
offerings that provide smart, practical solutions through optimized training and development
programs, specifically designed to meet Tranes business objectives. We have created three
phases of professional development that will provide the necessary training Trane is seeking.
The courses within each phase include live seminars, discussion boards, one-on-one instructor
interaction, and collaboration with other participants. Our environmental policy professors are
practitioners with current, real-world expertise in sustainability, environmental management, law,
and policy. And because courses are evaluated and updated regularly, you study the latest case
studies, research, and knowledge in the field.
In phase #1, participants will be addressing the interrelationships between natural systems and
the increasingly industrial, technological societies humans create. Their Biology of Pollution
seminar will assess the interactions between environmental pollutants and the biotic systems they
affect. And, finally, participants will examine global ecological interdependence and its implications
for the institutions of governance, both nationally and internationally. These seminars will provide
Tranes employees with a solid and usable understanding of the environment.
Following this understanding, phase #2 courses will start by examining United States
environmental law and policy and its development, implementation, and enforcement. Participants
will discuss the purpose, context, and implications of the most important laws, regulations, and
court cases. They will focus on the analysis of environmental policy and approaches to problem
solving. Participants will examine the organizational behavioral shifts toward addressing legal
compliance and profitability while promoting sustainability. Participants will also learn how to
Page | 2
balance the costs and benefits of risk reduction and how to account for the uncertainties in risk
estimates.
The final phase is reserved for Tranes engineers. Herein they will Learn how to apply the best
methods and practices used in environmental systems for air, water, energy, and waste. These
courses will provide an integrated analytical and critical view of the greenhouse effect, climate
change and the technologies required to mitigate its impact on the earth, including ecosystem
diversity, health, food and water supply, sea level rise, economics and political instability. After
analyzing the various technologies including fossil fuel conservation, end-use efficiencies and
renewable fuels, coupled with major policy decisions, the participant will be capable of developing
major technology and policy adaptation plans.
In order to broaden their expertise in sustainability concepts, tools and practices, we combine
many disciplines in our curriculum, including: engineering environmental science ecology
law pollution prevention climate change contamination migration sustainable
technology. Faculty and participants often collaborate on projects, which have included: hurricane
preparedness/resiliency for utilities, environmental technology curriculum for K-12, carbon
footprint study, green building design, and offshore wind power development. However, the
seminars that have been designed for Tranes climate commitment, will facilitate the growing need
for sustainable technology and a reduced carbon footprint.

CASE STUDIES

Kaplan University ELS Answers a Fire Departments Leadership Alarm

In the next 2 years, 11 top officers in a county fire department will be
retiring. The department is working closely with Kaplan University
ELS to identify competency gaps in their high-potential firefighters
who can fill these leadership positions. Kaplan University ELS is
also selecting a set of courses to address those gaps so that
properly trained firefighters will be ready to step into leadership
positions as soon as they are needed.

Adding Extra Value to a Managers Menu of Talents

Kaplan University ELS is working with a national fast food chain to
create a world-class corporate university. One of its first goals: to
help its local managers run their restaurants more efficiently. Kaplan
University ELS is designing a made-to-order business management
program to engage and motivate managers so they know as much
about P&Ls as they do about burgers and fries.

Bringing Diverse Relationships Together for the Benefit of All

To achieve magnet recognition, a leading hospital system in
California needed more BSN-qualified nurses. So Kaplan University
ELS worked with local community colleges and the hospital system
to ensure that Kaplan University bachelors degrees, community
colleges associates degrees, and the hospital systems needs
were all in sync to provide a clearly defined path to success.

Kaplan University ELS Seeks to Build Mutually Beneficial Alliances with

Academic Institutions
We are committed to working with community colleges across
the nation to positively affect college completion rates and to
develop a skilled workforce that can meet twenty-first century
needs. Kaplan University works with community college
participants to build upon the higher education foundation that
participants have already gained. Through a community college
education alliance, we can guide associates degree participants
on their path to earning a Kaplan University bachelors degree
and connect them with an education that blends academic knowledge and the skills for the
professional world.
