CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
REPORT NO. 2
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

OBJECTIVE:

1. To familiarize the basics characteristics and operation

of the centrifugal pump

DRAWING AND SKETCH:

1
QUESTION AND ANSWER:

1. WHAT IS THE PRINCIPLE BEHIND THE CENTRIFUGAL PUMP?

The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor. The
fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is
accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute
chamber (casing), from where it exits.

2. ENUMERATE THE DIFFERENT CLASSIFICATION OF PUMP.

Centrifugal Pumps (Roto-dynamic pumps)

The centrifugal or roto-dynamic pump produce a head and a flow by
increasing the velocity of the liquid through the machine with the help of
the rotating vane impeller. Centrifugal pumps include radial, axial and
mixed flow units.

Centrifugal pumps can be classified further as

end suction pumps
in-line pumps
double suction pumps
vertical multistage pumps
horizontal multistage pumps
submersible pumps
self-priming pumps
axial-flow pumps
regenerative pumps

Positive Displacement Pumps

A positive displacement pump operates by alternating filling a cavity and
then displacing a given volume of liquid. A positive displacement pump
delivers a constant volume of liquid for each cycle independent of
discharge pressure or head.

The positive displacement pump can be classified as:

Reciprocating pumps - piston, plunger and diaphragm
Power pumps
Steam pumps
2
Rotary pumps - gear, lobe, screw, vane, regenerative (peripheral)
and progressive cavity

3. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE CENTRIFUGAL PUMP?

As there is no drive seal so there is no leakage in pump

It can pump hazardous liquids
There are very less frictional losses
There in almost no noise
Pump has almost had 100 efficiency
Centrifugal pump has minimum wear with respect to others
There is a gap between pump chamber and motor, so there is no heat transfer
between them
Because of the gap between pump chamber and motor, water cannot enter
into motor
Centrifugal pump uses magnetic coupling which breakup on high load
eliminating the risk of damaging the motor

4. WHAT IS THE VOLUTE CENTRIFUGAL PUMP?

The volute of a centrifugal pump is the casing that receives the fluid being
pumped by the impeller, slowing down the fluid's rate of flow. A volute is a curved
funnel that increases in area as it approaches the discharge port.

CONCLUSION:

After the experiment, we can truly say that we learned so much thing mainly in
centrifugal pump. Such as in how it works and principle behind in how the operation
mechanism work. Also the basic parts, we can easily understand and differentiate the
pump by seeing its part.

RECOMMENDATION:

Hence, we determine in this aspect that everything has own advantages and
disadvantage but the most important aspect is in how you will a certain thing so that
you will able to maximize the potential or the capability to give work or services in the a
very efficient way.
