416 Mod 2.1A MOST Diagnosis (GibsonM, CooksonI) 03-11-04.doc 1

Preparation

1. Throughout this module we will be observing the interior CAN (CAN B) while
performing various diagnostic and operational functions to the audio system.
The DVOM that is connected to the vehicle has already been connected to
CAN B low. Here is what we should see if:
- CAN B is inactive (asleep) the voltage will be ~ 11.5 volts.
- CAN B is active (awake) the voltage will be ~ 4.5 volts.

2. There is also a switch box that will be used to simulate various malfunctions to
the audio system that must be in the correct position for that section of the
module. This switch box is located in the trunk.

Switch Box Position 1

1. Ensure the switch box in the trunk is in position 1 .

2. Connect SDS / DAS to the vehicle.
3. Check and erase fault codes in the Audio Gateway (AGW).
If you have any current DTCs, see the instructor.
4. Enter into Actual values and check the actual ring configuration of the MOST
components.
5. On the next page draw the ring configuration of this vehicle, labeling the
components.

MASTER

6. In actual values, select Wake-up line.

7. Is the actual value of the wake-up line correct? YES NO
If NO see instructor.
8. Exit out of SDS / DAS, DISCONNECT SDS / DAS from vehicle and turn ignition
OFF (if you had switched it on).
9. Open the vehicle doors.
10. Monitor the DVOM that is connected to CAN B and wait until CAN B goes to
sleep.
If CAN B does not go to sleep, see the instructor.
11. Locate the X30/8 connector block at the left front sill, and pull the bridge into the
test position.

Switch Box Position 2

1. Ensure the switch box is in position 2.

2. Did CAN B wake up? YES NO
If NO, contact instructor.
3. Continue to monitor CAN B activity. What appears to happen periodically to the
CAN? __________________________________________________________

14. Enter into actuations and select check of the wake-up lines to the MOST
components.
15. Is the test performed? YES NO
16. Enter into Actual values and select wake-up line.
17. What is the status of the wake-up line? ________________________________
18. Select F3 or enter.
19. Read the information on the screen and then select F2.
20. Which wake-up line is SDS / DAS asking you to test? _____________________
21. Since you have the bridge on the X30/8, the short could be on the wake-up line
of any of the components not just the AGW. Since the AGW is the master and
the only one setting a DTC for this situation. An easy way to eliminate the cause
as being a short on the wake-up line of the other components would be to
remove the bridge from the X30/8.
22. Select F2 to go back to the actual value screen for the wake-up line.
23. Locate the X30/8 connector block at the left front sill, and pull the bridge into the
test position.
24. Did the actual value change? YES NO
25. What does this indicate? ___________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
26. Carefully, completely remove the bridge on X30/8 and check for voltage on the
individual lines at each of the wake-up line pin connectors at X30/8.

The pin numbers can be found on the

bridging piece of the connector block.

On the next page, enter either the

voltage measured, or place an X in
the pin assignment if the pin is vacant
for all the pin positions:

27. Did you find any wake-up lines that have 0 volts? YES NO
28. Give four reasons why you may find 0 volts on the wake-up line with the X30/8
connector bridge removed?
i _____________________________________________________________
ii. _____________________________________________________________
iii. _____________________________________________________________
iv. _____________________________________________________________
29. Use the Hectapuss test harness to bridge all of the lines that have voltage on
them together.
30. Rerun the check of the wake-up lines to the MOST components.
31. What were the results of your test?

32. Based upon the ring configuration you drew earlier, can you at least narrow
down to which components wake-up line the short to ground is on?
YES NO
33. Which component(s) do you suspect? _________________________________
_______________________________________________________________

Instructor check point _______________

34. Return the switch box to position 1.

35. Remove the Hectapuss test harness and reinstall the bridge on the X30/8.
36. Re-enter into Fault codes and erase any DTCs.

NOTE: You may need to select Restart of optical ring in the AGW menu before
fault codes regarding ring configuration can be erased.

37. Turn the ignition OFF & remove the ignition key. E xit out of SDS / DAS and
disconnect from the vehicle.
38. Monitor the CAN B voltage to ensure that CAN B is asleep before continuing.

Switch Box Position 3

1. Ensure the switch box is in position 3.

2. Did CAN B wake-up? YES NO
3. Turn the audio system ON at the head unit.
4. Did the audio system play? YES NO
5. Did the Mercedes Benz logo appear on the screen? YES NO
6. What happened after a few minutes? _________________________________
7. Close a door or activate a door contact switch to ensure that CAN B is active.

8. Turn the audio system ON at the head unit.
9. What happened to the audio system? _________________________________
10. Attach SDS / DAS and check the AGW for DTCs.
11. List and define any DTCs received. __________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________

12. Highlight DTC D136 and select F3 or enter.

13. Disconnect the bridge of the X30/8 as described in the test sequence and select
F2.
14. If the short to positive was on the wake-up line from the AGW to the X30/8 you
would have received a screen telling you to check that line after the ring was
restarted. Since the AGW no longer recognizes the short after the bridge was
disconnected, it appears as though the short to power is on the wake-up line of
another component on the ring.
15. What would you have to do to determine where the short to positive is?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
16. Reinstall the bridge on the X30/8 connector.
17. Return the switch box to position 1.
18. Run a short test on the vehicle and erase any DTCs.
19. Disconnect SDS / DAS.

If you have noticed any parts that need to be replaced on this vehicle, please inform
your instructor now.
