Verify Complaint & Gather Information

Complaint: Customer states that audio system is inoperative / no sound.

1. Switch on COMAND to verify the complaint and observe any other clues that
might indicate a problem.
2. Did you confirm the complaint? YES NO
3. What did you notice happened on the head unit display screen?
Black screen all the time:
MB logo all the time:
Radio screen but no audio:
Initially MB logo then goes to black screen:
Other: __________________________________

4. Connect SDS / DAS and read the DTCs in the AGW that may relate to this
concern. (Note: A message Specified/Actual ring differs) Continue.

5. What DTC (s) are present that may relate to this concern?

________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________

6. Before we go any further we should check the specified configuration of the ring .
To do this, follow the path in SDS / DAS:
AGW Actual values Actual configuration of MOST components.

7. On the following page draw the ring configuration of this vehicle, labeling the
components with name, component number (K) and position number (P).
Remember, Communications Platform counts as 2 virtual units.

P ___

8. Is there a fault code relating to a component at a specific position reporting a

problem on the ring? YES NO
9. On your ring drawing, indicate the location of possible fiber optic malfunctions
that could cause this fault. Also indicate the possible electrical malfunctions that
could cause this fault code next to the appropriate components.
10. If YES, return to DTC screen. Highlight and enter on this DTC.
11. Choose F2 Start Test.
12. This vehicle has a Communications Platform not a UPCI. Choose F4

13. Why should this test be used after reading the fault codes?
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
14. Perform the wake-up test and indicate on the list below the results.
Telecommunications (Fixed installation cellular phone) ______________
TV tuner ______________
Voice control system ______________
CD changer ______________
COMAND or AUDIO ______________
Telephone adapter for portable C TEL ______________
Navigation processor ______________
Satellite radio ______________

which includes TELE AID and CTEL
Telephone adapter for portable CTEL = refers to a portable cell phone.

15. Choose F2.

16. Choose F2 again.
17. Is passive connector available? Choose F3.
18. Choose Check the MOST connectors located between the respective MOST
components. Use this screen to answer the following q uestions.
19. Where does the SDS / DAS screen indicate that a communication problem
exists between?
MOST component ___________________ and the MOST predecessor
component.
20. What is the MOST predecessor component listed for the specified vehicle
configuration of the vehicle?

Performing Tests

1. Perform the wake-up test again and indicate on the list below the results.
Telecommunications (Fixed installation cellular phone) ______________
TV tuner ______________
Voice control system ______________
CD changer ______________
COMAND or AUDIO ______________
Telephone adapter for portable CTEL ______________
Navigation processor ______________
Satellite radio ______________

Note: Telecommunications = usually refers to the Communications Platform,

which includes TELE AID and CTEL
Telephone adapter for portable CTEL = refers to a portable cell phone.
2. Were the results of this wake test different from the previous wake up test?
____________________________________________________________

3. No reaction from a component would indicate?

_____________________________ or _______________________________
4. Compare your ring configuration drawing with the SDS / DAS screen. Which
component(s) did not respond?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
5. Checking for voltage present at the X30/8 connector may help us to determine if
all of the modules on the ring have power, ground and an intact wake-up line.
6. In order to check each of the components wake-up line has voltage, what must
be done to the X30/8 connector block once it is exposed?
_______________________________________________________________

416 Mod 2.2 MOST Diagnosis (GibsonM, FranzenT, CooksonI) 07-01-04.doc 5

7. How many wake-up lines are connected at the X30/8 connector block on this
vehicle? ____________
8. How many components does the specified configuration show are on the ring for
this vehicle? ____________
9. Based upon this how many lines at the X30/8 connector block should have
voltage on them? ____________
10. Why could there be a different number of lines with voltage on them, compared
to the number of lines connected at the X30/8 connector block?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
11. Using a DVOM, check for voltage on the lines at the X30/8 connector block.
Do you have voltage on the appropriate number of lines? YES NO
12. What does this indicate about the component that you suspected had an
electrical fault?
_______________________________________________________________
13. Reconnect the bridge on X30/8.

Instructor check point ______________

14. Based upon the diagnostic information that you have gathered so far, is the
cause more likely to be electrical or optical? ____________________________
15. Return to the list of possible tests again and select Check the MOST connector
located between the respective MOST components.
16. This test instructs you to check the MOST connector at both the CD changer
and the voice control module. For the purpose of this module, we only want to
check the MOST connector at the voice control module.
17. Did the MOST connector appear to be OK? YES NO
18. Press F3 to continue.

416 Mod 2.2 MOST Diagnosis (GibsonM, FranzenT, CooksonI) 07-01-04.doc 6

19. Read the test sequence. This test has you disconnect the MOST connector at
the CD changer to determine if the fiber optic cables are orientated properly.
20. Is there an easier way to check if the optical cables are reversed at the CD
changer? ______________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
21. Locate the control module listed in your answer above and unplug the optical
connector. Reconnect to electrical connector to the control module.
22. Perform a ring start while observing the connector with the optical cable .
23. Do you have an optical flash from the CD changer to the voice control module?
YES NO
24. If so, how many? _____________
25. Was there a flash from the module you removed the optical connector
from?___________________________________________________________
26. Does this test rule out the optical cables being reversed at the CD changer?
YES NO
27. Complete the following assumption:
If more than one optical flash was observed at the connector coming from the
CD changer, this is an indication that the CD changer ____________________

______________________________________________________________.
28. Based upon all of the diagnostic information that you have gathered, what is the
most likely cause of the problem?
_______________________________________________________________

Instructor check point ______________

29. Return to the list of possible tests again and select Replace MOST control
module with passive connector.
30. At which module would you perform this test at? _________________________
31. Perform the test using the passive connector.

32. Do you now have ring lock? YES NO
33. If NO contact the instructor.
34. Remove the passive connector and insure that all electrical, wake-up bridge
connector and optical connections are reconnected.
35. Go to AGW main screen and select Complete list of guided tests
36. Choose Tests of MOST network and then F2.
37. List the 5 common optical problems.

38. Return the vehicle to the original condition at the start of the module and erase
all the fault codes.

Version Coding
1. Using SDS / DAS enter into AGW and select control unit adaptations.
2. Select Specified configuration of the MOST components.
Note: The vehicle that you are working on may have a bug installed causing the
optical ring to not achieve ring lock. This will cause the actual value fields
to display VACANT.
3. Highlight component 15, press enter or F3 and select TV tuner for that position.
4. Select F3 to transfer the coding into the control module.
5. Congratulations, you have now mis-configured the MOST ring.
6. Return to the AGW main menu
7. Enter into actua l values, then select actual configuration of MOST components
8. Can you see component 15 on the screen? YES NO
9. Could this lead you to believe that the configuration is correct and any DTC
relating to ring configuration is erroneous? YES NO

10. Return to AGW main menu, and then select Control unit adaptations, then
Specified configuration of MOST components.
11. Could this screen help you to determine if the DTC is legitimate?
YES NO
12. Highlight component 15 and code it correctly.
13. Check and erase any DTCs from the AGW.

If you have noticed any parts that need to be replaced on this vehicle, please inform
your instructor now.
