Overview
Purpose
This chapter provides generic information about Alcatel-Lucent Multi-Carrier Remote
Radio Head (MC-RRH) 900 MHz, its general architecture, its operating modes, and its
functions and benefits in the W-CDMA access network.
MC-RRH is radio module that facilitates NodeB to receive and transmit multiple carrier
signals, such as 2G or GSM and 3G or W-CDMA signals, on the same frequency band.
Thus, it helps the operators serve the GSM customers with W-CDMA users on the same
frequency band.

MC-RRH and distributed BTS

Overview
The MC-RRH is an outdoor, multi-carrier, twin Tx remote radio head and can be mounted
close to the antenna. MC-RRH has the hardware capability to support multi-standard
operations of 2G and 3G networks and is an integral part of Alcatel-Lucent Converged
RAN strategy. MC-RRH operates in the 3GPP Band VIII (900 MHz) and supports 2x40W
composite output power over a 25-MHz bandwidth.
MC-RRH has scalable capacity and supports remote management. MC-RRH is a
MIMO-ready radio module. The MC-RRH constitutes an independent network element
(outdoor box) communicating with its BTS site manager (central box).
MC-RRH can operate in a reduced bandwidth (reduced down to 4.2 MHz), supporting
carrier spacing of 2.2 MHz between the central UMTS frequency and central frequency of
first GSM carrier in coordinated deployments. This allows GSM 900 MHz interfaces to
be closer to the UMTS signal, thereby making better use of the available spectrum. In the
current release, only the uplink filter can be activated from the 2G load version.
The figure Figure 2-1, MC-RRH architecture (p. 2-3) shows the general architecture of
an MC-RRH.

W-CDMA - Maintenance Guide, NN-20500-282.

Components of MC-RRH
MC-RRH is a single-sector radio module with the following components:
Two transmit paths of up to 40 W each
Two receive paths
Two PAs
Two CPRI interfaces and two GE interfaces
AISG connector
One external alarm connector for two open or close alarms
A LED unit
Hardware capable of supporting a single or multiple GSM and WCDMA carriers up
to 25 MHz of spectrum of bandwidth anywhere within the 35 MHz band.

MC-RRH characteristics
The MC-RRH has the following properties and benefits:
Supports an instantaneous bandwidth of 25 MHz in all RF paths
Configurable RF power on a per carrier basis
Supports up to four GSM and one W-CDMA carriers distributed over two PAs
Allows configuring a PA is dedicated to a particular technology (GSM or W-CDMA)
Supports multi-mode dual fiber
With the current system release, MC-RRH shall support multi-generation carriers (GSM
+ W-CDMA) operations.

Supported equipment and interfaces

The following equipment and interfaces are supported:
MX-BSC
MFS DS10, GPU2, and GPU3
TMA and RETA features
SUMx 19-inch module
SUMx 19-inch module can be installed in any multi-standard indoor BTS,
multi-standard outdoor BTS, and any other cabinet allowing installation of 19-inch
modules in horizontal position.

MC-RRH architecture
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
As the SUMx 19-inch module supports only the MC-RRH, the TRE modules are
supported.
MC-RRH supports Antenna Line Device (ALD) interface port, antenna connections,
maintenance and diagnostic port, and electrical power input.

Distributed BTS with MC-RRH

The Alcatel-Lucent distributed BTS and d2U equipment support MC-RRH. In this
configuration, the MC-RRH provides the optical connectivity toward digital part (d2U) of
the NodeB using optical fibers supporting CPRI, carrying downlink and uplink base band
signals, and OAM information. The GSM traffic is carried through GE on optical links to
the SUMx.
SUMx 19-inch module
The SUMx module helps in transmission termination to 2G BSC, clock generation,
software download, alarm collection, and operation and maintenance tasks.
W-CDMA d2U unit
The CCM board (x and e modules) of 9326 d2U provides connections to MC-RRH
through the CPRI links (up to three links). The d2U hosts up to three CEM boards. The
number of CEM boards is dependent on the capacity required.

attributes to be set for the MC-RRH configuration.

Table 3-2 BTSEquipment parameters

Parameter Object Description

iRMLCGReport- BTSEquipment This parameter indicates how the BTS reports
Mode Local Cell Group (LCG) to RNC (through
NBAP). This parameter indicates how the base
Band resources can be shared on CEM between
two LCGs.
Possible values are: SeparatedPool- Each of the
two LCG are reserved with 50% of the D-BBU
resources. BTS reports one LCG to RNC per
object LCG defined at OMC-B.
SharedPool- There is no minimum resource
reserved for each LCG. BTS reports either one
LCG to RNC per R99 Resource object or one
LCG to RNC per BTS, depending on whether
r99NumberCECapacityLicensing limits the R99
Capacity BTS.
For a BTS that is configured with MC-RRH,
this parameter must be set to separatedPool.
maxNumberSec- BTSEquipment The parameter indicates if the BTS must
torsSofterHo manage softer HO on three or six sectors. If
max3Sectors, the BTS will manage softer HO
on maximum of three cells (cells referred by
one LCG) If max6Sectors, the BTS will manage
softer HO on maximum six cells, (six cells of
the two LCG referring the same RF Carrier).
isICemAllowed BTSEquipment This parameter indicates whether iCEM board
type is allowed to be used as BB resources in
the BTS or not.

Configuring multi-mode MC-RRH parameters

Purpose
This procedure describes how to set the multi-mode MC-RRH parameters.
This section includes the following procedures:
Setting Capacity parameters (p. 4-22).
Setting RemoteRadioHead attributes (p. 4-23).
Setting PAresourceRRH attribute (p. 4-23).

Before you begin

Before you begin, ensure that the following prerequisites are met:
BTSEquipment is provisioned with the appropriate hardware resources.
BTSEquipment is configured and is available in the WPS Network tree.
A workorder is created. For more information on creating a workorder, see
Alcatel-Lucent 9352 Wireless Provisioning System - User Guide, NN-20500-036.

Setting Capacity parameters

Perform the following procedure to set the Capacity object-related attributes.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

1 From the WPS network tree, select BTSEquipment/<BTSEquipment name>.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

2 Select Capacity/<ID> object.

3 From the Object Editor: Edition panel, select the rrhPowerCapacityLicensing

parameter.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

4 Ensure that the appropriate values are set for this parameter.
Note: The recommended value for this parameter depends on commercial agreement
and installed PA resources.
