Lesson idea implementation:

In conjunction with our previous lesson on learning Vacation vocabulary and forming sentences
using simple past tense, the students will have a chance to create either a mini movie or a poster to
present their ideal vacation. It can be a vacation that they have already taken or one they create, but
the project must be completed using the past tense.
At the beginning of this class, we will take about 5-10 minutes to go over homework from the
previous night and answer any questions the students may still be struggling with. A part of that
homework assignment was to choose how they wanted to present their project, either by creating a
movie or a poster, produce a script for their presentation using at least five sentences with past tense
verbs, and to bring in pictures from their past vacation (these can either be done digitally or
physically) if they have any. The students will then choose, based on how they are presenting their
project, to either grab a tablet or poster board and get started. There will be a scanning station (a
phone or tablet with a scanning app) for the students who brought in physical pictures. This is what
they will work on for the duration of the period, and I will be facilitating by walking around and
helping where needed. Whatever they do not finish in class will be done as homework; presentations
will start either next class period or the one after, depending on the progress of the students.
The videos will be posted to the classroom blog for parents to view, or, if the student decided
to create a physical poster, it will be hung up in class. Student learning will be assessed by the
creativity of the presentation, the students' ability to produce correct past tense sentences, and the
correct use of vocabulary words. Videos must be 3 minutes or less with at least 7 pictures, a video
segment, 3 facts about your location, and credits. Posters must have at least 7 pictures, have at least
five facts about the location, and have a drawing or diagram created by the student.
Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to the project because that is how they will
present their work. The project could be completed without the technology; there is the ability to not
use technology at all, but the ability to share and publish the video for views outside of the classroom
would be lost. Along with the iMovie app, scanning apps will also be learned how to use.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
A few issues that could arise due to internet safety and student privacy would be the fact that
there work will be published to the internet on the classroom blog. They will also be searching for
pictures, facts, and videos on the internet and may stumble across inappropriate content. Ways that I
can alleviate these concerns would be to first make sure that parents have signed the disclaimer info
sheet allowing the student to post to the website; I will also teach my students how to be safe digital
citizens by not putting personal information like their full names or addresses in their projects. I will
also give my students safe sites they can use to find videos, pictures, and the facts they need to
complete their project.
