2
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the morphological characteristics and taxonomical

classification and benefits contents of the hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf) plant.

Specifically, this study seeks answer to the following questions:

1. What describes the hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf) plant in terms of:

a. habit, habitat and life form,

b. leaves,

c. flowers,

d. stems, and

e. roots?

2. Based on number 1, what is the plant scientific classification of hydrangea

macrophylla (big leaf) plant?

3. What are the benefits contents found in the flower of hydrangea

macrophylla (big leaf) plant ?

4. How do the local residents describe the hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf)

plant in terms of: a. gross morphology,

b. physiology, and

c. economic uses?

3
Assumptions

1. The hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf) plant has benefits value that can kill

cockroach.

2. The hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf) plant has distinct characteristics to

the plants that belong to the genus Syzygium.

3. The hydrangea macrophylla plant can be used to make useful products.

Significance of the Study

The investigations of the external characteristics and the benefits of

hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf) plant deemed significant to the following:

Department of Health. This study will be helpful in promoting the benefits of

plant that can be also used as .

Department of Science and Technology. It will be helpful in conducting

researches about the plant and the products that can be made out of it. Also, it can

be a useful source in identifying the morphological characteristics of other plants that

belong to the family Myrtaceae genus Syzygium that are not yet named until now.

Department of Agriculture. This will promote planting more trees of

hydrangea macrophylla that can be a source of income and good nutrition.

Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD). This study will be

helpful in preserving these kind of plant found in Palawan that has the potential to be

a source of good nutrition as well as livelihood for people.

4
The Academic Community. The preliminary results will be helpful in knowing

the morphological structure and the benefits contents of the hydrangea macrophylla

plant.

Local Residents.

Palawan National School. This study can be a source of reference for the

students to know more about the plant and conduct future researches.

Researchers. They will expand their knowledge about the characteristics of

the hydrangea macrophylla plant and can be a reference for conducting studies.

The Future Researchers. The results will be helpful for conducting future

researches about the hydrangea macrophylla plant and know its uses to the

community.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will be delimited on the following:

Problem. This study is entitled Evaluation of insecticidal properties of

hydrangea macrophylla (big leaf) on periplanet American (Americana cockroach)

It aims to determine the morphological characteristics and scientific

classification and the benefits contents of the hydrangea macrophylla plant.

5
It will describe the habitat, life forms and morphological characteristics

of leaves as to type, shape, arrangement, venation, apex, base, margin, attachment,

texture and color; stem in terms of habit, branching pattern, texture and color; flowers

as to attachment, symmetry, maturation, sex, stamens type and arrangement,

anthers type and arrangement and ovary attachment and position; fruits in terms of

accessory parts and specific type; and, shape, color, It also dealt with the scientific

plant classification in terms of kingdom, sub kingdom, division, class, order, family

and genus, and species and the benefits content of the hydrangea macrophylla plant.

Locale. The study will be conducted in

The map of Barangay presented on the next page.

For the experimental part, the morphological study and the benefits content

analysis will be conducted at Palawan National School Science Laboratory, Puerto

Princesa City, Palawan.

Time Frame. The study started from and will end in March 2017.

Definition of Terms

In order to facilitate common understanding of information conveyed in this

research study, these terms are hereby defined operationally and theoretically.

Hydrangea macrophylla It is also known as big leaf which has three color

varieties (red, green and white) and native to Asian countries like Philippines,

Indonesia, Malaysia and etc.

6
Morphological This refers to the external characteristics, form and structure

of a plant or animal.

Nutritional Content A source of nourishment.

Physiology It refers to the functions of the living organisms and body parts.

Family Myrtaceae It belongs to the major group Angiosperms ( flowering

plants). It is a family dicotyledonous plants. One of the examples of the plant that

belongs to this family is guava.

Genus SyzygiumIt is a genus of flowering plants that belong to the myrtle

family, Myrtaceae. Most species are evergreen trees and shrubs and several species

produced edible fruits used in jellies and jams.

Habitat This is the place or type of place where a plant or animal naturally or

normally lives or grows.

stem or twig.

FlowersThe part of a plant that is often brightly colored, that usually lasts a

short time, and from which seed or fruit develops.

StemsThe main trunk of a plant; specifically: a primary plant axis that

develops buds and shoots instead of roots.

Fruits A product of plant growth. It is usually a sweet food that grows on a tree

or bush.

7
Plant Scientific Classification It finds,identifies,describes,classifies,and

names plants. It also deals with the actual handling of plant specimens. The plant

scientific classification of the tambis plant will be classified according to its external

characteristics.

Gross MorphologyIt refers to the collective structures or an organism as a

whole as a general description of the form and structure of an organism, taking into

account all of its structures without specifying an individual structure.
